Miércoles 22 de febrero

En el semifondo, el olímpico Darrelle Valsaint ganó claramente un combate del peso medio ante Lucas de Abreu, que protestó alegando que el duelo estaba pactado a 8 rounds y no a 6. En cuanto al evento de Golden Boy Promotions, el peso supermosca estadounidense John “Scrappy” Ramírez fue muy superior al mexicano Luis “Callado” Villa, que se vio sobrepasado por la destreza y la cadencia de golpes de su rival y perdió por amplísima decisión unánime. En el choque coestelar el prospecto estadounidense del peso gallo Manuel “El Meny” Flores tuvo muchos problemas con el sustituto venezolano Franklin González, que perdió por controvertida decisión dividida. Crónica siguiendo el enlace.
El jueves también se desarrolló un cartel de Boxing Insider Promotions en el que la peso ligero estadounidense Heather “The Heat” Hardy a duras penas logró una cuestionable decisión mayoritaria en una intensa pugna ante la brasileña Taynna Cardoso. Como parte del respaldo de este evento se produjo un encuentro del peso semipesado en el que el francés Frederic Julan regresó a la senda del triunfo, tras dos tropiezos, venciendo por decisión unánime al estadounidense Decarlo “3mendo” Pérez. Crónica siguiendo el enlace.

Viernes 24 de febrero
La velada de Let’s GO Management fue cancelada, ya que el peso superpluma Alex Dilmaghani finalmente peleará el 22 de abril contra el exaspirante mundial Zelfa Barrett en el respaldo del evento Rakhimov-Cordina organizado por Matchroom Boxing. Por otro lado, el campeonato de Inglaterra del peso gallo Jordan Purkiss vs. Ramez “The Mathemagician” Mahmood ha sido movido en el calendario hasta la velada de Let’s GO Management del 10 de marzo.
La jornada sí contó con el regreso a los cuadriláteros del excampeón mundial cubano Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeaux, que empezó a dejar atrás un muy mal año ganando en el primer round un choque del peso gallo ante el colombiano Jesús Martínez. Crónica siguiendo el enlace.
Ninguno de los dos eventos de AGON Sports fue un éxito para la promotora. En el del viernes, el peso medio Bjoern Schicke 20(10KO)-2(2)-1 no sólo perdió contra pronóstico, sino que se quedó cortísimo ante el chileno Julio Álamos 16(9KO)-0, que lo batió por KOT en el cuarto asalto. Así, mientras Álamos se ganó nuevas buenas oportunidades y demostró sus cualidades, Schicke puso de manifiesto definitivamente que no tiene nivel para aspirar a combatir en la cumbre del peso medio como pretendía hacer.
En el semifondo, el excampeón de Italia del peso medio Etinosa Oliha 17(8KO)-0 necesitó seis asaltos para derrotar al jornalero mexicano con escaso encaje Rafael Amarillas 16(9KO)-5(4)-1.
Respecto a la velada de Shuan Boxing, ésta padeció diversos cambios, así que finalmente el combate estelar fue una victoria por KOT en el segundo asalto del peso crucero Félix Valera sobre el sustituto Alex Therán. Crónica y vídeo del evento siguiendo el enlace.
Finalmente respecto al viernes, la italiana, campeona de Europa del peso pluma, Anna Lisa Brozzi 4(2KO)-3 fue destronada por la visitante española Sheila Martínez 5(1KO)-3, que se coronó con una decisión unánime (98-92, 98-92, 96-95). Martínez, que sólo tiene 24 años, encadena dos victorias seguidas en el extranjero ante boxeadoras que partían por delante en las apuestas, por lo que sin duda ha puesto de manifiesto un buen nivel competitivo pese a tener todavía corta experiencia profesional y, de seguir así, en no mucho tiempo alcanzará una pelea muy significativa para su carrera.
Sábado 25 de febrero
El puertorriqueño Subriel Matías se proclamó nuevo campeón mundial IBF del peso superligero venciendo al argentino Jeremías Ponce por KOT en el quinto round de un combate que estuvo repleto de emocionantes intercambios antes del repentino abandono de “Jere”. Crónica siguiendo el enlace.
En el choque coestelar, el peso wélter estadounidense Jamal James tuvo de nuevo críticas dificultades físicas en forma de un gran cansancio pero, aun así, pudo superar por decisión unánime al olímpico argentino Alberto Palmetta. Crónica siguiendo el enlace.
El tramo televisado de este evento de PBC también ofreció una victoria por decisión mayoritaria del peso superligero dominicano Elvis Rodríguez sobre el estadounidense Joseph Adorno, combate en el cual el ganador tuvo una mala primera mitad y, en general, no fue lo suficientemente intenso desde el punto de vista ofensivo. En el tramo no televisado, VeShawn Owens ganó por decisión unánime un choque ante Kudratillo Abdukakhorov y tanto Willie Jones como Kel Spencer derrotaron en un solo asalto a Derrick Jackson y Margarito Hernández, respectivamente. Vídeo oficial de los combates siguiendo el link.
El segundo evento de AGON Sports finalmente no contó con el campeonato de la Unión Europea del peso pesado entre Granit Shala 13(3KO)-0 y Jack Mulowayi 13(9KO)-3(1)-1, ya que el primero supuestamente se lesionó a última hora antes de este peligrosísimo duelo. Así, el combate estelar fue finalmente un duelo en el que el peso superwélter Haro Matevosyan 17(9KO)-0 no fue excesivamente brillante en su triunfo unánime (117-111, 117-111 y 116-112) sobre el mexicano Alejandro “Pájaro” Dávila 23(9KO)-5(2)-2. Aun así, Matevosyan, 6º IBF, no está lejos de disputar una prueba de fuego ante un top 15.
Pasando al campeonato mundial WBO del peso gallo, la titular danesa Dina Thorslund 19(8KO)-0 controló las acciones ante la peso mosca argentina Débora Anahí López 20(1KO)-2(1)-1 antes de una detención arbitral en el octavo asalto. Hasta que Thorslund no se enfrente en unificación a una peso gallo de élite no encontrará un reto a su altura, y se tendrá que conformar con agrandar su palmarés con defensas más o menos intrascendentes.
El filipino Regie Suganob 13(4KO)-0 se convirtió en aspirante obligatorio del campeón mundial Sivenathi Nontshinga, puesto que venció al imbatido Mark Vicelles 17(10KO)-1-1 por decisión técnica (80-71, 78-73, 77-74) en una eliminatoria IBF del peso minimosca. Antes de la detención por corte en Vicelles (causado por choque de cabezas), Suganob se había anotado un knockdown y estaba siendo superior, por lo que superó el test con considerable solvencia y parece que debería ofrecer un serio reto al monarca el choque que próximamente disputarán.
Terminando con el sábado, pero no con el artículo, se puede hacer mención de estos otros resultados:
-El excampeón mundial japonés Tomoki Kameda 40(22KO)-3 se convirtió en el primero en derrotar antes del límite al mexicano Luis Castillo 30(20KO)-5(1), que sucumbió por KOT en el quinto asalto. De todos modos, a Kameda le quedan bastantes meses de espera antes de poder disputar el mundial ante Murodjon Akhmadaliev.
-El peso supergallo mexicano Jesús Arechiga 19(13KO)-0 no combatió contra David Carmona, sino contra el sustituto Jesús Gómez 11(8KO)-9(4), que fue derribado dos veces y perdió por decisión unánime.
-El imbatido peso superligero argentino Rubén Néstor Neri 12(8KO)-0 cumplió con lo esperado y sumó una amplísima victoria por decisión unánime (99-89, 99-89 y 98-90) sobre Alexis Nahuel Torres 9(5KO)-4(2)-1.
-El peso ligero mexicano Juan Antonio Rodríguez 33(29KO)-9(2) sólo necesitó dos rounds para terminar por KOT con Cristian Sonora 19(12KO)-7(5).
Domingo 26 de febrero
El mal reinado del campeón WBC del peso crucero Ilunga Makabu 29(25KO)-3(3) terminó el domingo al ser derribado dos veces y batido por KOT en el duodécimo asalto a manos del exmonarca del peso supermedio Badou Jack 28(17KO)-3(1)-3. Por ello, mientras Makabu tendrá la complicadísima tarea de pensar en cómo reconstruirse siendo veterano, teniendo problemas de encaje y teniendo como promotor al nefasto Don King, Jack posiblemente reciba ofertas de unificación de otros campeones, que verán en él a un púgil al borde del retiro por edad y que podría garantizarles una buena bolsa.

On this day there was a new ProBox Promotions evening. Its main event ended with a draw between the super middleweights Manuel Gallegos and Richard Vansiclen. Article and video of the card following the link.
In the co-feature bout, Olympian Darrelle Valsaint clearly won a middleweight bout against Lucas de Abreu, who protested alleging that the fight was scheduled for 8 rounds and not 6. As for the Golden Boy Promotions event, American super flyweight John «Scrappy» Ramírez was far superior to Mexican Luis «Callado» Villa, who was overwhelmed by his opponent’s skill and punch rate and lost by landslide unanimous decision. Article and video of the card following the link.
In the co-main event, American bantamweight prospect Manuel «El Meny» Flores had many problems with Venezuelan substitute Franklin González, who lost by controversial split decision. Read more following the link.
Also on Thursday, Boxing Insider Promotions offered an event in which American lightweight Heather “The Heat” Hardy scored a questionable majority decision in an intense matchup against Brazilian Taynna Cardoso. For his part, Mongolian Olympian Tsendbaatar Erdenebat finished in three rounds his clash against Nicaraguan Giovanni Gutiérrez. Article and video of the card following the link.
In the support for this event there was a light heavyweight match in which Frenchman Frederic Julan returned to winning ways, after two consecutive setbacks, defeating American Decarlo “3mendo” Pérez by unanimous decision. Read more following the link.

The Let’s GO Management evening was canceled as super featherweight Alex Dilmaghani will finally fight on April 22 against former world challenger Zelfa Barrett in the undercard of the Rakhimov-Cordina event. On the other hand, the English bantamweight championship Jordan Purkiss vs. Ramez “The Mathemagician” Mahmood will take place on March 10.
On this day former world champion Guillermo “El Chacal” Rigondeaux started leaving behind a very bad year by winning in the first round a bantamweight clash against Colombian Jesús Martínez. Read more following the link.
Neither of the two AGON Sports events were a success for the promotional company. On Friday, middleweight Bjoern Schicke 20(10KO)-2(2)-1 not only lost by upset, but he also fell very short against Chilean Julio Álamos 16(9KO)-0, who beat him by TKO in the fourth round. Thus, while Álamos earned new good opportunities and demonstrated his qualities, Schicke definitively showed that he does not have the level to aspire to fight at the top of the middleweight division as he intended to do.
In the undercard, former Italian middleweight champion Etinosa Oliha 17(8KO)-0 needed six rounds to defeat a journeyman with poor chin as Mexican Rafael Amarillas 16(9KO)-5(4)-1.
Regarding the Shuan Boxing evening, it suffered several changes, so finally the main fight was a cruiserweight matchup in which Félix Valera scored a second round TKO over substitute Alex Therán. Article and video of the card following the link.
Finally regarding Friday, the European featherweight champion, Italian Anna Lisa Brozzi 4(2KO)-3, was dethroned by the Spanish visitor Sheila Martínez 5(1KO)-3, who was crowned with a unanimous decision win (98-92 , 98-92, 96-95). Martínez, who is only 24 years old, has stringed two victories on the road against betting favorites, so she has undoubtedly shown a good competitive level despite still having little professional experience and, if she continues like this, she will reach soon a very significant fight for her career.

Puerto Rican Subriel Matías became the new IBF super lightweight champion defeating Argentinian Jeremías Ponce by fifth round TKO in a fight full of exciting exchanges before “Jere” quit. Read more following the link.
In the co-main event, American welterweight Jamal James had again serious stamina issues but, even so, he was able to defeat the Argentine Olympian Alberto Palmetta by unanimous decision. Read more following the link.
The televised part of this PBC event also featured a majority decision victory for Dominican super lightweight Elvis Rodríguez over American Joseph Adorno, a bout in which the winner had a poor first half and was generally not intense enough from an offensive point of view. In the prelim fight, VeShawn Owens beat Kudratillo Abdukakhorov by unanimous decision and both Willie Jones and Kel Spencer scored first round wins over Derrick Jackson and Margarito Hernández, respectively. Official video of these fights following the link.
The second AGON Sports event ultimately did not feature the European Union heavyweight championship between Granit Shala 13(3KO)-0 and Jack Mulowayi 13(9KO)-3(1)-1, as the former reportedly got injured at the last minute before this very dangerous fight. Thus, the main bout was finally a super welterweight fight in which Haro Matevosyan 17(9KO)-0 was not excessively brilliant in his unanimous decision victory (117-111, 117-111 and 116-112) over Mexican Alejandro “Pájaro” Dávila 23(9KO)-5(2)-2. Even so, Matevosyan, IBF number 6, is not far from facing a decisive test against a top 15.
Moving on to the WBO world bantamweight championship, Danish titleholder Dina Thorslund 19(8KO)-0 dominated the actions against Argentinian flyweight Débora Anahí López 20(1KO)-2(1)-1 before an eight-round stoppage. Thorslund will not find a challenge up to her until she faces an elite bantamweight in a unification, and in the meantime she will have to settle for improving her record with more or less inconsequential defenses.
Filipino Regie Suganob 13(4KO)-0 became mandatory challenger for world champion Sivenathi Nontshinga, as he defeated the unbeaten Mark Vicelles 17(10KO)-1-1 by technical decision (80-71, 78-73, 77- 74) in an IBF light flyweight eliminator. Before the stoppage due to a cut suffered by Vicelles (caused by clash of heads), Suganob had scored a knockdown and was being superior, so he overcame the test with considerable efficiency and it seems that he should offer a serious challenge to the titlist.
These other results took place on Saturday:

Sunday, February 26
The poor reign of WBC cruiserweight champion Ilunga Makabu 29(25KO)-3(3) ended Sunday when he was dropped twice and knocked out in the twelfth round at the hands of former super middleweight champion Badou Jack 28(17KO)-3(1)-3. Therefore, while Makabu will have the extremely difficult task of thinking about how to rebuild himself being a veteran, having chin issues and having the nefarious Don King as a promoter, Jack could receive offers to unify with other champions, who will see him as a fighter on the verge of retirement and who could guarantee them a good purse.
