Preview: In theory, this Saturday Ritson, Davies, Ward and Kholmatov will fight in WBA eliminators. Probellum is missing

Since Daniel Kinahan was declared wanted and several of the world’s biggest promoters distanced themselves from MTK Global (which ended up closing) and Probellum, accusing them of having dealings with the aforementioned Kinahan, the latter of the companies has maintained a low profile. So much so that right now the Probellum website doesn’t work and they have deleted all the tweets from their main Twitter account.

In theory, Probellum was supposed to return this Saturday with an event at the Utilita Arena in Newcastle, UK, which was to feature two world eliminators. However, BoxRec currently considers Phil Jeffries the organizer of Saturday’s event, making matters even more confusing.

In any case, the stadium has tickets on sale, the WBA has the eliminators listed on its website and the participants have referred to Saturday’s fights on their social networks, so for now we have to assume that indeed the clashes will take place.

One of them will be a super lightweight eliminator in which Lewis “Sandman” Ritson 23(13KO)-2(1) and Ohara “Two Tanks” Davies 24(17KO)-2(1) will fight to reach a clash against WBA monarch Alberto Puello after the latter is challenged by Ismael Barroso. Ritson will enter the match stringing two victories since his tough defeat against Jeremías Ponce, while Davies will do so on a six-win streak since his narrow setback against Jack Catterall.

Since Ritson lost the support of many fans with his performances against Patera, Ponce and “Títere” Vázquez, many believe Davies will pull off an easy win. Still, Davies didn’t have a great performance against Vazquez either (his win over the Mexican was considered controversial as well), and he’s very tactically inconsistent, having delivered many lackluster performances, to say the least. Thus, a simple boxer with agility problems like Ritson, but tenacious at short range, and a fighter like Davies with better footwork and more technical resources, but irregular and not very solid, face off in a duel in which will be more important who deals better with his weaknesses than who best imposes his virtues.

As for the other eliminator match, this will be in the featherweight division and between the British Thomas Patrick Ward 33(5KO)-0-1 and the Uzbek Otabek Kholmatov 10(9KO)-0, who will fight to become Mauricio Lara’s mandatory challenger. Perhaps the numbers of both fighters can make it seem that the bout is badly matched, but it should not be considered that Ward is an overwhelming favorite and that Kholmatov has zero chance of success.

Although Ward is skilled and can be tricky at long distance, he has an obvious lack of punch. In addition, in his biggest challenge to date, he barely managed to achieve a draw against Thomas Essomba, who, on paper, has a lower level than the Uzbek. Regarding Kholmatov, he is a boxer with a long amateur career (in which he was youth world bronze medalist) who has shown remarkable power and who in his biggest bout to date scored a wide victory over an opponent tough and with a good level as the then undefeated Andranik Grigoryan.

Therefore, although neither Ward nor Kholmatov would be favorites in a future fight against Maurico Lara, both would reach a turning point in their careers if they score victory on Saturday and would make a statement regarding their aspirations.

In the support of this evening, for which there is no information on the broadcast, undefeated bantamweight Lee McGregor 11(9KO)-0-1 will put an end to more than a year of inactivity fighting in a easy tune-up fight against veteran Burkinabe journeyman Alexis Boureima Kabore 29(8KO)-7(1).
