Hasta 2021 el peso semipesado francés Frederic Julan 13(10KO)-2 era un púgil invicto que algunos consideraban que tenía cierta proyección, pero dos derrotas consecutivas, separadas por un año de inactividad, le dejaron en una mala posición. Para intentar empezar a cambiarla, el jueves Julan se enfrentó al estadounidense Decarlo “3mendo” Pérez 19(6KO)-8(3)-1, al que venció por decisión unánime (79-73, 78-74 y 78-74) en el respaldo del Hardy-Cardoso.
Cuando la pelea se desarrolló en la distancia larga, el zurdo Julan usó su jab y su directo de izquierda solo o en uno-dos para llegar claramente contra su oponente y establecer un control táctico. Por otro lado, cuando Pérez arremetió buscando golpearle desde la distancia media-corta, Julan le contragolpeó con su directo o su cruzado de mano adelantada o simplemente entró en clinch para frenarlo.
En ocasiones, por mera insistencia, a menudo entre agarres, Pérez consiguió llegar con algunos buenos hooks en corta, pero por lo general los puños de Julan fueron más nítidos y significativos y su defensa fue lo suficientemente buena en una pelea de este nivel como para contener parte de los éxitos de su oponente.
Quizás “3mendo” tuvo su mejor round en el quinto, en el que sostuvo durante un tiempo sus ofensivas con combinaciones de curvos con su rival de espaldas a las cuerdas. Pero no pudo dar continuidad a sus aciertos y en los posteriores asaltos Julan básicamente volvió a controlar el choque desde la distancia larga con sus izquierdas no muy potentes pero precisas. De hecho, en los últimos rounds Pérez perdió ritmo y redujo su cantidad de embestidas, lo que todavía le dio más margen al favorito, que en los últimos instantes del combate incluso dañó al estadounidense con persistentes directos.
Un triunfo ante una piedra de toque como Pérez no implica que Julan haya evolucionado o que esté listo para un importante paso adelante, especialmente considerando que en sus anteriores duelos perdió ante rivales menos experimentados que él. Con todo, este triunfo fue una buena forma de recuperar moral y en él demostró que, si tiene un matchmaking adecuado enfrentándose a rivales sin gran velocidad de piernas, podría aspirar a algunos triunfos destacables. Aunque es posible que Julan, que no tiene un gran margen de tiempo por su tardío debut profesional, termine convirtiéndose en un peldaño para boxeadores con más aspiraciones si acepta peleas como no favorito ante novatos motivados.

Until 2021, French light heavyweight Frederic Julan 13(10KO)-2 was an undefeated fighter who was considered by some to have potential, but two consecutive losses, separated by a year of inactivity, left him in a bad position. To try to change the trend, on Thursday Julan faced the American Decarlo «3mendo» Pérez 19(6KO)-8(3)-1, whom he defeated by unanimous decision (79-73, 78-74 and 78-74) in Hardy-Cardoso’s support.
When the actions remained at long range, the southpaw Julan used his jab and his straight left, alone or in one-two combinations, to hit his opponent cleanly and establish a tactical control. On the other hand, when Pérez attacked looking to strike from short-medium distance, Julan counterpunched him with his left hand and his lead hook or simply clinched to stop his advance.
At times, by sheer insistence, often between holds, Pérez managed to connect some good hooks at close range, but usually Julan’s punches were sharper and more significant and his defense was good enough in a fight of this level to contain part of his opponent’s successes.
Perhaps «3mendo» had his best round in the fifth, in which he sustained his offensives for a while with combinations of hooks with his rival on the ropes. But he couldn’t maintain that level of success and in the subsequent rounds Julan basically controlled the clash from long distance with his not very powerful but precise left shots. In fact, in the last rounds, Pérez lost pace and reduced his number of attacks, which gave the favorite even more margin, so in the last moments of the fight Julan even hurt the American with persistent straight hands.
A victory against a boxer like Pérez does not mean that Julan has evolved or that he is ready for an important step up, especially considering that in his previous bouts he lost to opponents less experienced than him. All in all, this win was a good way to regain morale and in it he showed that, if he has a proper matchmaking and is pitted against opponents without great leg speed, he could aspire to obtain some good wins. However, it is possible that Julan, who doesn’t have a lot of time due to his late pro debut, could end up becoming a stepping stone for fighters with more aspirations if he accepts bouts as underdog against motivated rookies.
