Renold Quinlan

Thursday, September 15
Super middleweight prospect Jack Bowen was defeated by veteran Renold Quinlan, who scored a fifth-round knockout that is already considered by many one of the upsets of the year in Australian boxing. Read more following the link.

Super welterweight Benjamin Hussain also suffered an upset loss. In his case, he only lasted two rounds against Lachlan Higgins. Read more following the link.

Heavyweight Joseph Goodall bounced back from his loss to world bronze medalist Justis Huni with a third-round TKO of Arsene Fosso. Read more following the link.

In the support of the Australian evening in which the aforementioned clashes were included, heavyweight Junior Tafa and welterweight Ty Telford also won by TKO, respectively, against David Tuliloa and Vanlalawmpuia. Read more following the link.

On the other hand, in the American card of this day, super middleweight prospect Andrew Murphy 7(5KO)-0 only needed two rounds to defeat Rafael García 9(6KO)-6(4) and he must urgently return to the tests against resistant opponents to avoid stagnating or developing an inappropriate perception of his level. In the co-feature also happened what was expected, since lightweight Jesús Saracho 12(11KO)-1(1) dealt the first defeat to the inactive Nick Jefferson 10(5KO)-1(1) with a TKO in the fifth round that should be followed by a fight of some difficulty towards the end of the year for the Mexican boxer.

Arslanbek Makhmudov

Friday, September 16
In his first bout since signing with Top Rank, Russian heavyweight Arslanbek Makhmudov failed to maintain his 100% knockout ratio against former world title challenger Carlos Takam. Makhmudov knocked down his opponent twice and won by unanimous decision, though he raised doubts for his lack of variety of offensive resources and, above all, for his defensive flaws. Read more following the link.

As for the Frank Warren bill, British middleweight champion Denzel Bentley had a bit of initial difficulties against Marcus “Sweet MNM” Morrison, but ended up achieving a TKO in the fourth round. In the main support, cruiserweight Ellis Zorro won on points a thrilling match against Dec “Kid Nytro” Spelman and the very young Royston Barney-Smith got rid of Paul Holt in the first round. Read more following the link.

As for former super middleweight world title challenger Shefat Isufi, he scored his ninth consecutive victory since moving up to light heavyweight beating the strong Canadian Ryan Ford by unanimous decision. Read more following the link.

Argentinian welterweight William Andres Herrera also extended his streak, since he rallied after a first-round count to knock down countryman Sergio Manuel Liendo four times and obtain a fourth-round TKO victory. Read more following the link.

Although it is increasingly clear that he is not a great puncher, the 20 years old Mexican lightweight Luis «Koreano» Torres 17(10KO)-0 continues to emerge as a promising boxer with an interesting future, as on Friday he defeated the unbeaten César “Torito” Gutiérrez 14(5KO)-1-2 with a convincing unanimous decision. Therefore, if he maintains this pace, Torres will soon appear on the rankings and will face important challenges.

Saúl Álvarez

Saturday, September 17
In an uninteresting clash, Saúl «Canelo» Álvarez clearly defeated the very faded Gennadiy Golovkin to close the trilogy. Read more following the link.

Although some claimed that Jesse Rodríguez could win the boxer of the year award, the fact is that this was put even more in doubt with a performance well below expectations against Israel González, who offered a great fight. However, the favorite finally obtained a victory by a very narrow margin. Read more following the link.

This contrasted with the wide win of super middleweight Ali Akhmedov over veteran “King” Rosado, as the Kazakh did not lose a round on the judges’ scorecards. Read more following the link.

The Canelo-Golovkin III card began with middleweigh Austin Williams knocking down and beating Kieron Conway by unanimous decision despite the British boxer creating some early tactical difficulties with his solidity. Read more following the link.

On the non-televised undercard, Diego Pacheco defeated Enrique Collazo by TKO in the fifth round, Marc Castro also beat Kevin Montiel in the fifth round, Anthony Herrera won by technical decision against Delvin McKinley and Aaron Aponte and Fernando Ángel Molina fought to a draw. Official video of these fights following the link.

Moving on to the Wasserman card, British and Commonwealth lightweight champion Gavin Gwynne 15(3KO)-2(1)-1 retained his belts with a draw (double 114-114 and a 116-113) against Craig “Smiler” Woodruff 12(4KO)-6(1)-1, a result that, as always, not convinced almost anyone. Therefore, the best thing would be for both to fight in a rematch, but this option could be hampered if the champion receives a better offer.

In the same event, light heavyweight Lyndon “King” Arthur 20(14KO)-1(1) returned to winning ways beating Walter Gabriel “El Yacaré” Sequeira 25(17KO)-10(6)-1 by TKO in the sixth round. Now it will be interesting to see if Arthur will try to fight in the hard light heavyweight British scene or if instead he will seek to position himself in the world rankings through minor titles and easy fights.

Ending this week’s results:
-South African Kevin “The KO Kid” Lerena 28(14KO)-1 continued his heavyweight run with a unanimous decision win (double 120-108 and a 118-110) over veteran Mariusz “The Viking” Wach 36 (19KO)-9(4), although he has been avoiding challenges against the elite for so many years that one should not be too optimistic about his future selection of opponents.
-Japanese super featherweight champion Kosuke Saka 22(19KO)-6(4) defended his belt with a sixth-round TKO over Tsubasa Narai 8(7KO)-2(2), stabilizing his career after a loss in an OPBF championship.
-Central Area welterweight titleholder Dom “Hurricane” Hunt 11(1KO)-0 scored the biggest win of his career to date by outpointing (97-93) Darren Tetley 21(9KO)-4( 1), so he should start targeting the English belt owned by Harry Scarff.
-The two-time Olympian Yamil Peralta 14(7KO)-1 only needed three rounds to beat Fabio Maldonado 28(27KO)-6(3), so now he waits for a new important international fight in which he could be treated more fairly than against Ryan Rozicki.
