Super middleweight Jack Bowen 7(7KO)-1(1) is well regarded in his country and is even considered by some one of the most promising fighters in the division in Australia. Therefore, his fight to gain experience against his veteran compatriot Renold “Dunghutti Destroyer” Quinlan 15(10KO)-11(4) was not seen as an insurmountable challenge. On the contrary, despite being a competent fighter and a good opponent for a test, Quinlan has lost nine of his last eleven bouts. However, in the matchup against Bowen, Quinlan managed to overcome moments of serious difficulty to achieve one of the upsets of the year in Australian boxing with a knockout in the fifth round.

In the opening round Quinlan showed his explosiveness and his threat connecting hooks at short distance, although a little later Bowen created distance and began to land crisp right hands, hard jabs and some powerful hooks and uppercuts. Thus, Bowen slightly wobbled his opponent in the second round and in the third he almost made him touch the canvas when he landed a good right hand.

Nevertheless, when things began to look very bad for the veteran, Quinlan reacted in the fourth round by charging aggressively with hook combinations that seemed to do some damage to Bowen, who still responded with determination. Even so, the undefeated was being worn out and in the fifth round a big right hand sat him spectacularly on the canvas. Bowen tried to get up but rolled on the mat, finally rising unsteadily and making it obvious that he was in no condition to continue.

Although many have the bad habit of considering the careers of young boxers over after their first defeat, Bowen has punch and certain technical qualities, in addition to being only 26 years old, so if he knows how to learn the lessons from this defeat, he will be able to continue advancing, maybe even reinforced. As for Quinlan, aside from remembering to everybody that experienced fighters should not to be underestimated, he will surely access to an important opportunity, although it is questionable that he can put on a solid winning streak at this point in his career.
