Preview: Joyce vs. Parker, unification Serrano vs. Mahfoud, Magnesi vs. Cacace, etc. this Saturday in Frank Warren’s evening

Unlike what happens in many other cases, in which prominent contenders just wait and wait without even considering facing tough fights to try to strengthen their candidacy for a world championship, heavyweight Joe “Juggernaut” Joyce 14(13KO )-0 doesn’t plan to sit idly waiting for the WBO to order a fight between him and unified world champion Oleksandr Usyk. On the contrary, on Saturday he will headline an evening at the AO Arena in Manchester (United Kingdom) facing a former world champion like New Zealander Joseph Parker 30(21KO)-2.

Given that overall Joyce is considered one of the most dangerous contenders in the division currently and that he has delivered impressive performances for his mix of power, chin and consistent pressure, many see this fight as a stay-busy bout for the undefeated. However, Joyce has very worrying defensive flaws and suffers from both technical deficiencies and an obvious lack of speed, something that Bryant Jennings (who had just been knocked out by Óscar Rivas) took advantage of to win several rounds and reach a decision.

So, if Jennings could pull off that, it wouldn’t be crazy to think that the best version of Parker could have positive results in the fight if he moves with some fluidity and takes advantage of his precision to land cunning straight shots to exploit the frontal advance of Joyce, who sometimes seems to totally lack ring intelligence. All in all, taking into account recent performances by Parker such as the ones he had against Junior Fa and in the first duel against Chisora, it is more than questionable that he is going to be able to offer the best performance of his career on the ring, which is what he would need to achieve the upset.

In addition, Parker suffers from drops in performance due to his stamina issues that a very strong and very regular Joyce could undoubtedly use in his favor, even more so considering that the New Zealander will not outpower «Juggernaut» in clinches. Thus, although Parker is not such a bad rival as some unfairly state, it is logical to think that he will again show enough weak points in his performance for Joyce to defeat him.

One step away from the undisputed title
In the co-feature there will be a triple unification of featherweight belts, since the Puerto Rican Amanda «The Real Deal» Serrano 42(30KO)-2-1, WBO and WBC titleholder, will face the Danish Sarah Mahfoud 11(3KO)-0, IBF monarch. Therefore, after this match the winner will only have to face the WBA champion Erika Cruz to try to conquer the undisputed title.

Mahfoud is a boxer with a good amateur background, and as a professional she has two notable victories, since she beat two fighters with qualities like Brenda Carabajal and Nina Meinke. Still, it’s impossible not to consider the powerful Serrano as the overwhelming favorite, especially after the performance she had moving up to lightweight to face a top 10 pound-for-pound boxer as Katie Taylor. So while Mahfoud could have her moments if she has studied her opponent well, surely Serrano will end up imposing her explosiveness and her power shots.

Magnesi-Cacace, Essuman-Antwi
These bouts will be preceded by two other interesting duels, one of them being a decisive test for the international aspirations of two super featherweights like the Italian Michele Magnesi 21(13KO)-0 and the British champion Anthony “The Apache” Cacace 19(7KO)-1. This looks like an excellent clash of styles between the punch of the aggressive Magnesi, on a streak of eight stoppage wins, and the skillful counter-punching boxing of Cacace, an astute southpaw with size advantage.

On the other hand, the resistant British and Commonwealth welterweight champion Ekow “The Engine” Essuman 17(7KO)-0 will face a tough defense of his titles against Samuel “True Sensation” Antwi 14(6KO)-1(1), former English champion who knocked down twice and beat by TKO Darren Tetley, fighter who Essuman only beat by decision.

Three other noteworthy bouts will be featured on the undercard: unbeaten middleweight Nathan Heaney 15(6KO)-0 will take on Jack “Quiet Storm” Flatley 19(4KO)-2(1)-1, who has only suffered defeats against Harry Scarff and Kerman Lejarraga; British super middleweight champion Mark “Kid Dynamite” Heffron 28(22KO)-2(2)-1 will have a stay-busy fight against the Argentinian Martín Ezequiel Bulacio 10(7KO)-6(2); and featherweight prospect Raven Chapman 3(2KO)-0 will take a huge step forward in increase of difficulty by fighting Argentinian former world champion Jorgelina “Jota” Guanini 10(1KO)-4-2.

In the United Kingdom, the main card of this event will be broadcast through a BT Sport PPV that will begin around 7:00 p.m., while in the United States it will be broadcast by ESPN + at 2:00 p.m. ET/11:00 a.m. PT.
