Anoche, el argentino Williams Andrés Herrera 14(6KO)-1 extendió a once su racha de victorias, y capturó su primer título menor, venciendo por KOT en el cuarto asalto a su compatriota Sergio Manuel Liendo 14(4KO)-7(6), boxeador ante el cual el favorito se repuso tras un mal comienzo.
En el primer round el móvil y zurdo Liendo quedó desordenado (incluso un guante se le quedó agarrado a la cuerda superior) tras fallar un ataque, pero sacó dos izquierdas que alcanzaron bien a Herrera, quien retrocedió afectado tras la última. Sin que hubiese caída, el árbitro realizó entonces una cuenta de protección, pero en la reanudación Herrera impactó un uno-dos que llevó al tapiz a Liendo.
Así se igualaron las cartulinas, pero no tanto las acciones, puesto que en adelante Herrera, más ordenado y firme con sus directos, pareció llevarse la mejor parte ante un Liendo desordenado y tácticamente oscilante. Tras protestar Liendo dos veces por golpes en la parte trasera de la cabeza, y caer tras el segundo de ellos, Herrera perdió un punto en el tercer round, lo que redujo la diferencia sólo por un instante.
Y es que en ese mismo asalto el favorito llevó a las cuerdas a Liendo con un directo diestro-cruzado zurdo y le derribó con un directo descendente. Posteriormente, Herrera descargó andanadas hasta que su contrincante quedó sostenido por las cuerdas y el árbitro realizó una nueva cuenta. Este fue el principio del fin, ya que, aunque en el comienzo del siguiente round Liendo intentó sacudirse la presión con algunos ataques, en el cuarto round Herrera volvió a tener mejores resultados ofensivos que su oponente y con un gancho diestro al torso lo puso de rodillas en el tapiz. Liendo se levantó, pero el árbitro estimó que no sería adecuado dejarle continuar.
Dado que el cinturón menor IBF capturado seguramente no le servirá para aparecer en las listas y, de todos modos, sería muy precipitado llevarlo hacia una andadura internacional tras sólo catorce victorias, parece que el siguiente paso para Herrera será un aumento de dificultad en el circuito de su país. En la categoría del peso wélter argentina habría varias opciones realmente buenas para él, alguna de las cuales quizás se podría concretar hacia diciembre si Herrera mantiene su alto ritmo de combates, habiendo disputado ya cuatro peleas en esta temporada.

Last night, Argentinian Williams Andrés Herrera 14(6KO)-1 extended his winning streak to eleven victories, and captured his first minor title, defeating by TKO in the fourth round his compatriot Sergio Manuel Liendo 14(4KO)-7(6), boxer against whom the favorite overcame a bad start.
In the first round the mobile and southpaw Liendo lost order after missing an attack, but he then landed two left hands that hit Herrera, who backed away hurt after the last one. Although the boxer did not fall, the referee then made a count, but at the restart Herrera landed a one-two that took Liendo to the mat.
Thus the scorecards got even, but not so much the actions, since from then on Herrera, tactically more solid and sharper with his straight punches, seemed to connect the best hands against Liendo, with a messy and oscillating boxing. After Liendo protested twice for blows to the back of the head, and falling after the second of them, Herrera lost a point in the third round, so the difference in the scores reduced, but only for an instant.
In that same round the favorite took Liendo to the ropes with a right-handed-left hook combination and knocked him down with a straight shot. Later, Herrera unleashed flurries of hooks until his opponent was held by the ropes and the referee made a new count.
This was the beginning of the end, since, although at the start of the next round Liendo tried to avoid being pressured throwing some attacks, in the fourth round Herrera once again had better offensive results than his opponent and with a right hook to the body put him on his knees. Liendo got up, but the referee felt that it would not be appropriate to let him continue.
Given that the conquered IBF minor belt will surely not help him to appear in the rankings and, in any case, it would be very rash to take him towards international fights after only fourteen victories, it seems that the next step for Herrera will be an increase in difficulty in his country’s scene. In Argentina’s welterweight division there would be several really good options for him, some of which could perhaps happen by December if Herrera maintains his high rate of bouts, having already fought four times in this season.
