Previa: Mauricio Lara vs. Leigh Wood II encabeza cartelera de Matchroom Boxing

Hace menos de una semana, la velada más reciente de Matchroom Boxing terminó con Eddie Hearn prometiendo una revancha para Katie Taylor contra Chantelle Cameron en otoño [hemisferio norte], haciendo honor el promotor a su fama de entusiasta de las revanchas. De hecho, el combate que encabezará la próxima cartelera de Matchroom, que se producirá éste sábado, será otro duelo de desquite, en este caso entre el mexicano Mauricio “Bronco” Lara 26(19KO)-2(1)-1 y el británico Leigh “Leigh-thal” Wood 26(16KO)-3(2).
Al margen de que Hearn insista o no demasiado en organizar revanchas para encuentros que no terminan como él desea, el hecho es que a los aficionados no les importará volver a ver un choque entre Lara y Wood, más bien todo lo contrario. Y es que el pasado febrero, Wood iba ganando a los puntos (en las tres cartulinas) un entretenido combate antes de que Lara lo desgastase, lo derribase aparatosamente y forzase a su esquina a tirar la toalla.
Por ello, dado que en la primera pugna hubo idas y venidas, emoción y un contundente desenlace, los fans están muy dispuestos a visualizar este segundo duelo, que esta vez no se producirá en Nottingham, ciudad de Wood, sino en el Manchester Arena de Manchester. Por lo tanto, por cuarta vez Lara combatirá en Reino Unido tras sus dos duelos con Warrington y el citado choque ante “Leigh-thal”.
En el primer enfrentamiento hubo un planteamiento táctico algo inesperado, ya que Lara, en lugar de presionar con intensidad, decidió dejar bastantes espacios (muchos más de los que suelen ser habituales en él) y renunció a hostigar con intensidad a su oponente cuando lo dejó tocado. Así, Wood logró su ventaja a los puntos gracias a su técnica más ortodoxa, su buen manejo de los golpes rectos, su condición de local, etc.
Dicho esto, la cuestión principal parece estar en si el campeón mundial WBA del peso pluma Lara volverá a dejar tanto margen para trabajar a su contrincante o si intentará causar estragos de forma más directa y agresiva que esperando momentos para contragolpear. Algunos consideran que Lara en el primer combate mostró con su planteamiento que tenía en mente las derrotas de Conlan y Xu ante Wood y la pegada de éste, y que quizás vuelva a boxear de la misma manera. De ser así, de nuevo podría tener dificultades tácticas.
De todos modos, incluso si Lara volviese a tratar de reducir riesgos y esto le diese malos resultados tácticos, e incluso si volviese a dar muestras de cansancio como le sucedió la vez anterior, no hay ninguna garantía de que Wood no vuelva a sucumbir por la descomunal potencia de “Bronco”. Especialmente si tenemos en cuenta que Wood ha padecido un terrible castigo en sus dos últimos combates ante Conlan y Lara. En otras palabras, doce asaltos ante un gran pegador nueve años más joven es mucho tiempo para un boxeador que ha ido recientemente de guerra en guerra.
Sea como sea, presione con fuerza Lara o no, tome la iniciativa Wood o intente moverse y contragolpear, el hecho es que este es un combate que parece que merece mucho la pena ver, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta que en teoría se producirá después de que termine otro mundial del peso pluma como el López-Conlan.
Respaldo del Lara-Wood II
Antes del enfrentamiento estelar, se producirán tres pugnas mencionables, pero ni mucho menos extraordinarias. En el que, en teoría, será el semifondo, el exretador mundial británico del peso superligero Jack “El Gato” Catterall 26(13KO)-1 retornará al ring tras 15 meses de inactividad (desde su duelo ante Josh Taylor) enfrentándose al irlandés Darragh Foley 22(10KO)-4-1, un boxeador voluntarioso pero limitado ante el que será claro favorito para ganar un combate en el que muchos no esperan gran entretenimiento.
Por otro lado, la campeona mundial WBA del peso superwélter Terri Harper 13(6KO)-1(1)-1, una semana después de que se cancelase su combate contra Cecilia Braekhus, combatirá contra la croata Ivana Habazin 21(7KO)-4(1), que en sus tres mayores peleas ha sido utilizada como víctima propiciatoria por boxeadoras de élite en pelas mundialistas. Finalmente, Danny Ball 12(5KO)-1(1)-1 y Jamie “Ginger Rocket” Robinson 15(4KO)-5-2 se verán las caras en un campeonato inglés por el vacante cinturón del peso wélter para terminar de dar forma a una velada que, más allá del encuentro estelar, es barata y con poco que ver.

Less than a week ago, Matchroom Boxing’s most recent evening ended with Eddie Hearn promising a rematch for Katie Taylor against Chantelle Cameron next fall [Northern Hemisphere], the promoter living up to its reputation as a rematch enthusiast. In fact, the fight that will headline the next Matchroom card, which will take place this Saturday, will be another rematch, in this case between Mexican Mauricio “Bronco” Lara 26(19KO)-2(1)-1 and British Leigh “Leigh-thal” Wood 26(16KO)-3(2).
Regardless of whether or not Hearn insists too much on organizing rematches for fights that don’t end as he wishes, the fact is that fans won’t mind seeing a Lara vs. Wood clash again, quite the opposite. Last February, Wood was winning on points (on all three cards) an entertaining bout before Lara wore him down, knocked him down spectacularly and forced his corner to throw in the towel.
For this reason, given that in the first fight both had their moments and there was excitement and a spectacular ending, the fans are very willing to watch this second bout, which this time will not take place in Nottingham, Wood’s city, but at the Manchester Arena in Manchester. Therefore, for the fourth time Lara will fight in the United Kingdom after his two duels with Warrington and his aforementioned clash against «Leigh-thal».
In the previous match there was a somewhat unexpected tactical approach, since Lara, instead of putting intense pressure, decided to give up the initiative much more than is usual for him and renounced to intensely attack his opponent when he hurt him. Thus, Wood achieved his lead on points thanks to his orthodox technique, his good use of the straight shots, his home-field advantage, etc.
That said, the main question seems to be whether the WBA world featherweight champion Lara will once again leave as much room to work to his opponent or whether he will try to generate damage more directly and aggressively than waiting for moments to counterpunch. Some consider that Lara in the first fight showed with his approach that he had in mind the defeats of Conlan and Xu against Wood and his punch, and perhaps he will box again in the same way. If so, he might once again have tactical difficulties.
Still, even if Lara were to try to reduce risk again and this gave him poor tactical results, and even if he were to show signs of fatigue like last time, its possible that Wood could succumb to the enormous power of “Bronco”. Especially considering that Wood has suffered hard punishment in his last two fights against Conlan and Lara. In other words, twelve rounds against a heavy puncher nine years younger is a long time for a fighter who has recently gone from war to war.
In any case, with Lara pressing hard or steeping back, with Wood taking the initiative or trying to move and counter, the fact remains that this is a fight that seems very worth watching, even more so taking into account that it will theoretically take place after the end of another featherweight world championship like the López-Conlan fight.
Undercard
Before the main event, there will be three mentionable, but far from extraordinary bouts. In what, in theory, will be the co-feature bout, British former world super lightweight challenger Jack «El Gato» Catterall 26(13KO)-1 will return to the ring after 15 months of inactivity (since his duel against Josh Taylor) facing Irishman Darragh Foley 22(10KO)-4-1, a tenacious but limited boxer against whom he will be clear favorite to win a clash in which many do not expect great entertainment.
On the other hand, WBA super welterweight world champion Terri Harper 13(6KO)-1(1)-1, a week after her fight against Cecilia Braekhus was canceled, will face Croatian Ivana Habazin 21(7KO)-4(1), who in her three biggest fights has been used as a victim by elite female boxers in world title bouts. Finally, Danny Ball 12(5KO)-1(1)-1 and Jamie “Ginger Rocket” Robinson 15(4KO)-5-2 will square off in an English championship for the vacant welterweight belt to finish shaping an evening that, beyond the main fight, is cheap and without much to see.
