Una semana después de que Dublín viviese una importante velada para Irlanda, aunque terminada con resultados negativos para los locales, el irlandés Michael Conlan 18(9KO)-1(1) buscará convertirse en el único campeón mundial masculino de su país en la actualidad. Este hito tratará de lograrlo combatiendo en el SSE Arena de Belfast, Reino Unido, contra el monarca mundial IBF del peso pluma, el mexicano Luis Alberto “Venado” López 27(15KO)-2. En esta pugna, Conlan es favorito para vencer, aunque esto pueda sorprender a muchos, especialmente teniendo en cuentas la racha de diez triunfos de López, el último de los cuales lo obtuvo ante Josh Warrington.
Aunque López ha sido infravalorado incontables veces durante su trayectoria, lo cierto es que Conlan parece en posición de lograr una victoria por decisión. Si bien las palizas que López propinó a Flores y Lowe son una seria advertencia de que “Mick” no podrá ofrecer menos del 100%, el hecho es que Conlan tiene una solidez, una técnica, unos reflejos y un instinto combativo muy superiores a los dos boxeadores arriba mencionados. Por otra parte, Warrington tiene un estilo (agresivo pero sin pegada) que beneficia de forma evidente a un peleador mucho más contundente como López, mientras que Conlan en principio no cometerá el error de intercambiar en corta si no es obligado a ello.
Si Conlan aprovecha, como en la primera mitad de su pugna ante Wood (que tiene más pegada que López), su precisión, su destreza y su inteligencia de ring para explotar los huecos y para contragolpear reduciendo los momentos de riesgo, sin duda podría ser capaz de generar serias dificultades tácticas a un López bastante frontal en su aproximación. No obstante, el punto débil de Conlan, la disminución crucial de su resistencia a largo plazo en pugnas prolongadas, ofrecerá una opción de triunfo clara para López en la segunda parte si el boxeador local no gestiona sus energías mejor que en otras ocasiones y si “El Venado” sabe conservar las suyas para intensificar con sus cargas y sus golpes de poder en el momento adecuado.
Un interesante respaldo
Las peleas de acompañamiento del López-Conlan contarán con la participación de múltiples boxeadores destacados de la Isla de Irlanda.
Y es que el potente contendiente irlandés del peso supermedio Padraig “The Hammer” McCrory 16(9KO)-0 pondrá a prueba su pegada ante el argentino Diego “El Chacarero” Ramírez 25(6KO)-9(2)-1; el peso superpluma de Belfast Anthony “The Apache” Cacace 20(7KO)-1 disputará su primer combate de 2023, tras su triunfo ante Magnesi, peleando contra el polaco Damian Wrzesinski 26(7KO)-2-2, que sólo ha sufrido dos ajustadas derrotas en toda su carrera; el joven prospecto irlandés del peso superligero Pierce O’Leary 11(6KO)-0 afrontará su segundo combate a diez rounds midiéndose al rumano Alin Florin Ciorceri 17(7KO)-3(1); y el peso supermosca de Belfast Conor Quinn 5(4KO)-0-1 afrontará un enorme paso adelante enfrentándose al hispano-peruano, de récord muy engañoso, Juan Hinostroza 11(5KO)-10-2.
Además, a todos estos se sumará el explosivo peso pluma de Liverpool Nick Ball 17(10KO)-0, que tras dar forma a una buena racha de victorias antes del límite intentará seguir aplastando a su oposición, y entrar en el top 3 WBC, peleando por un cinto menor ante el invicto sudafricano Ludumo Lamati 21(11KO)-0-1, que es sobre el papel uno de los dos mejores boxeadores a los que se ha medido en su carrera.
Este evento será ofrecido en Reino Unido por BT Sport 1 y en Estados Unidos por ESPN+ desde aproximadamente las 18:30 en hora local, las 13:30 ET/10:30 PT, las 19:30 en España.

One week after Dublin lived an important evening for Ireland (although it ended with negative results for the local boxers) Irishman Michael Conlan 18(9KO)-1(1) will seek to become his country’s only current men’s world champion. He will try to achieve this feat by fighting at the SSE Arena in Belfast, United Kingdom, against the IBF featherweight champion, the Mexican Luis Alberto «Venado» López 27(15KO)-2. In this bout, Conlan is the favorite to win, although this may surprise many, especially considering Lopez’s ten-win streak, his last victory being against Josh Warrington.
Although Lopez has been underestimated many times during his career, the truth is that Conlan seems capable to pull off a decision win. Although the beatings that López gave Flores and Lowe are a serious warning for «Mick», who will not be able to offer less than 100%, the fact is that Conlan has solidity, technique, reflexes and a fighting instinct far superior to the two boxers above mentioned. On the other hand, Warrington has a style (aggressive but without a punch) that obviously benefits a much more forceful fighter like Lopez, while Conlan in principle will not make the mistake of exchanging at short range if he is not forced to.
If Conlan takes advantage, as in the first half of his fight against Wood (who has more punch than López), of his precision, skill and ring intelligence to counterpunch while reducing the moments of risk, without a doubt he could generate serious tactical difficulties for a quite frontal fighter in his approach like López. However, Conlan’s weak point, his stamina issues in prolonged fights, will offer a clear winning chance for López in the second half if the local boxer does not manage his energies better than on other occasions and if “El Venado” knows how to intensify his charges and insist in his power shots at the right time.
An interesting support
The López-Conlan undercard fights will feature multiple prominent boxers from the Island of Ireland.
Powerful Irish super middleweight contender Padraig «The Hammer» McCrory 16(9KO)-0 will put his punching to the test against the Argentinian Diego «El Chacarero» Ramírez 25(6KO)-9(2)-1; Belfast super featherweight Anthony “The Apache” Cacace 20(7KO)-1 will face his first bout of 2023, after his win over Magnesi, fighting Polish Damian Wrzesinski 26(7KO)-2-2, who has only suffered close defeats in his career; young Irish super lightweight prospect Pierce O’Leary 11(6KO)-0 will face his second ten-round bout against Romanian Alin Florin Ciorceri 17(7KO)-3(1); and Belfast super flyweight Conor Quinn 5(4KO)-0-1 will have a huge step up battling Spanish-Peruvian, with a very misleading record, Juan Hinostroza 11(5KO)-10-2.
In addition to all these, the explosive featherweight from Liverpool Nick Ball 17(10KO)-0, who is on a good streak of stoppages, will try to continue crushing his opposition, and enter the WBC top 3, fighting for a minor belt against undefeated South African Ludumo Lamati 21(11KO)-0-1, who is on paper one of the two best boxers he has faced in his career.
