Top Rank wins purse bid for Beterbiev-Smith, but losses the bidding for Falcao-Gualtieri

Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose, although in this case Top Rank has won and lost on the same day. Yesterday the company faced purse bids for two world title fights in which boxers from its squad will participate, having mixed success. However, the positive thing for the company is that they won the most important of both.

That purse bid was for the fight for the unified WBC, IBF and WBO light heavyweight titles between its fighter, Russian champion Artur Beterbiev, and British challenger Callum Smith, a member of the Matchroom Boxing stable. For this matchup, Top Rank bid $2,115,000, beating by just $15,000 Matchroom Boxing’s offer of $2,100,000. The amount will be distributed 70-20 in favor of Beterbiev, while the remaining 10% will go to the winner of the match. Thus, it is to be expected that by mid-summer [northern hemisphere], Beterbiev and Smith will face each other in a very interesting clash.

On the other hand, there was a purse bid for the world championship for the vacant IBF middleweight belt, fight in which Brazilian Esquiva Falcao and German Vincenzo Gualtieri will battle. In this case, Top Rank, which represents Falcao, was $35,000 short, and AGON Sports, the company that promotes Gualtieri, won with a figure of $410,000 (which will be split 50-50). In this way, unless Top Rank tries to renegotiate the fight in some way with AGON so that it could take place in the United States (as has been done in other cases) it is logical to think that the German company will take the match to its country trying to maximize Gualtieri’s chances of success by having home advantage.
