Previa: Rakhimov-Cordina, Gwynne-Woodruff más Barrett, Ryan y Thompson en velada de Matchroom Boxing

Simplemente, el tayiko Shavkat Rakhimov 17(14KO)-0-1 y el británico Joe Cordina 15(9KO)-0 estaban destinados a enfrentarse. En un principio la pugna se iba a producir en noviembre como una defensa del entonces monarca Cordina, pero una lesión en la mano de este último (que llegó tras varios aplazamientos de su defensa mandatoria ante Rakhimov) conllevó que la pugna se cancelase y que el campeón perdiese su cinturón por no cumplir con sus obligaciones. Posteriormente, Rakhimov capturó el cinturón vacante ante Zelfa Barrett (al que batió por KOT), llegando su primera defensa este sábado, en el Cardiff International Arena de Cardiff, Reino Unido, ante el boxeador mejor clasificado del ranking… Joe Cordina.
Evidentemente, peleando en su ciudad, en una velada organizada por su promotor, teniendo superior carrera amateur y habiendo dado una enorme muestra de explosividad en su última pelea ante Kenichi Ogawa (al que noqueó en dos rounds), Cordina parte como favorito pese a ser el retador. Además, a esto se suma el hecho de que Rakhimov cayó a la lona ante un púgil menos potente como Barrett y a que sólo pudo empatar ante un “Jo Jo” Díaz bastante lento de piernas y limitado en sus recursos técnicos.
No obstante, aunque es lógico que Cordina sea considerado favorito y perfectamente podría hacerse con el triunfo, necesitará evitar a toda costa verse en un combate como el que tuvo ante Faroukh Kourbanov, boxeador que es una versión mucho menos contundente y fuerte de Rakhimov ante el que se mantuvo demasiado tiempo en la distancia media y sólo pudo vencer por decisión mayoritaria.
Con todo, si en lugar de permitir que Rakhimov trabaje con sus compactos golpes en media-corta consistentemente, Cordina usa su juego de piernas para crear los espacios suficientes para dar recorrido a sus golpes e intentar mantener la distancia a la vez que se hace respetar, quizás pueda obtener resultados decisivos, quizás contragolpeando las frontales cargas del visitante.
Respaldo del evento
La cartelera contará con otros cuatro combates destacables, siendo uno de ellos un choque del peso superpluma en el que el citado Zelfa “Brown Flash” Barrett 28(16KO)-2(1) buscará regresar a la senda del triunfo, y mantenerse cerca de la parte más alta del ranking IBF (ahora mismo es 8º con los dos primeros puestos vacíos), enfrentándose al estadounidense Jason “El Alacrancito” Sánchez 16(9KO)-3. Este es un boxeador competente, que nunca ha sido noqueado y que ha sufrido sus derrotas ante Óscar Valdez, Christopher Díaz y Adam López, por lo que parece un buen test para comprobar cuál es el estado anímico y el rendimiento de Barrett tras su dura derrota del pasado noviembre.
Por otro lado, en la velada también destaca la revancha, y campeonato británico del peso ligero, entre Gavin Gwynne 15(3KO)-2(1)-1 y Craig Woodruff 12(4KO)-6(1)-1. El primer choque terminó en empate, pero muchos aficionados vieron a Woodruff ganar, por lo que hay cierta expectación entre los aficionados locales por este encuentro, especialmente siendo ambos galeses y peleando en casa. Ahora mismo, el favorito en las apuestas es Gwynne, que venía en una mejor racha antes de dicho empate, si bien Woodruff ha evolucionado mucho respecto a su primera etapa profesional y es un boxeador al que no se debe infravalorar nunca, especialmente recordando los problemas que le generó al insigne prospecto Gary Cully (al que derribó duramente).
Finalmente, en el evento se deben destacar también un campeonato mundial femenino por el cinturón WBO del peso wélter en el que se da por hecho que la prospecta británica Sandy Ryan 5(2KO)-1 podrá derrotar a una boxeadora voluntariosa pero más lenta, con peor técnica y menos experiencia de calidad como la canadiense Marie Pier Houle 8(2KO)-0-1, y un choque del peso crucero en el que el invicto Jordan Thompson 14(11KO)-0 intentará recuperar confianza tras su susto ante el duro jornalero Vasil Ducar, y seguir desarrollándose, enfrentándose al campeón de Inglaterra Luke “The Duke” Watkins 16(11KO)-2(1).

Simply, the Tajik Shavkat Rakhimov 17(14KO)-0-1 and the British Joe Cordina 15(9KO)-0 were destined to fight. At first their clash was going to take place in November as a defense of the then monarch Cordina, but an injury to the latter’s hand (which came after several postponements of his mandatory defense against Rakhimov) led to the fight being canceled and the champion losing his belt for not fulfilling his obligations. Subsequently, Rakhimov captured the vacant belt against Zelfa Barrett (whom he beat by TKO), his first defense taking place this Saturday, at the Cardiff International Arena in Cardiff, United Kingdom, against the highest ranked boxer… Joe Cordina.
Obviously, fighting in his hometown, in an evening organized by his promoter, having a superior amateur career and having put on a great display of explosiveness in his last fight against Kenichi Ogawa (whom he knocked out in two rounds), Cordina is the betting favorite despite being the challenger. In addition, to this is added the fact that Rakhimov was dropped by a less forceful fighter like Barrett and that he could only fight to a draw against a «Jo Jo» Díaz, who has slow legs and is limited in his technical resources.
However, although it is logical that Cordina is considered the favorite and could perfectly win the match, he will need to avoid at all costs a fight like the one he had against Faroukh Kourbanov, a boxer who is a much less powerful version of Rakhimov against whom he exchanged too much in the middle distance and could only win by majority decision.
However, if instead of allowing Rakhimov to work with his compact shots at short-medium range consistently, Cordina uses his footwork to create enough space to throw long punches and try to maintain distance while not giving too much ground, perhaps he can obtain decisive results, for example counterpunching the visitor’s frontal charges.
Undercard
The event will feature four other mentionable bouts, one of them being a super featherweight clash in which the aforementioned Zelfa “Brown Flash” Barrett 28(16KO)-2(1) will seek to return to winning ways, and stay close to the highest part of the IBF ranking (right now he is number 8 with the first two positions empty), facing American Jason “El Alacrancito” Sánchez 16(9KO)-3. This is a competent boxer, who has never been stopped and who has suffered his losses against Óscar Valdez, Christopher Díaz and Adam López, so he seems like a good test to check Barrett’s morale and performance after his tough defeat last November.
On the other hand, in the evening also stands out the rematch, for the British lightweight title, between Gavin Gwynne 15(3KO)-2(1)-1 and Craig Woodruff 12(4KO)-6(1)-1. The first bout ended in a draw, but many fans saw Woodruff winning, so there is some anticipation among the local fans for this matchup, especially taking into account that both boxers are Welsh and are fighting at home. Right now, the betting favorite is Gwynne, who was on a better run before that draw, although Woodruff has evolved a lot from his first professional stage and is a boxer who should never be underestimated, especially remembering the problems he caused to prospect Gary Cully (whom he knocked down hard).
Finally, the card will also have a women’s world championship for the WBO welterweight belt in which it is expected that the British prospect Sandy Ryan 5(2KO)-1 will be able to defeat a tenacious but slower boxer, with worse technique and less quality experience like Canadian Marie Pier Houle 8(2KO)-0-1, and a cruiserweight clash in which the undefeated Jordan Thompson 14(11KO)-0 will try to regain confidence after his scare against the tough journeyman Vasil Ducar, and continue to develop, facing the English champion Luke «The Duke» Watkins 16(11KO)-2(1).
