Tras dos peleas en las que tuvo dificultades puntuales, el peso superpluma estadounidense George “El Yuyu” Acosta 15(2KO)-1 esta vez no tuvo problemas para controlar su pugna ante el colombiano César Villarraga 10(5KO)-7(1)-1 y derrotarlo por clara decisión unánime. Las puntuaciones en este combate estelar del evento de Thompson Boxing fueron 80-72, 80-72, 78-74.
Tras unos cruces de jabs iniciales en el centro del ring, Acosta empezó a acelerar y a conectar buenos cruzados diestros y golpes al torso. Ante esto Villarraga intentó contragolpear con su hook de mano adelantada y lanzó combinaciones de curvos para tratar de disminuir la presión, De todos modos, “El Yuyu” se mantuvo ordenado y midió bien sus ofensivas, evitando bastantes manos con un adecuado control de la distancia y continuando trabajando con su derecha al cuerpo, con cruzados diestros y con otros golpes de poder que fueron desgastando al visitante, que cada vez recurría más al clinch.
En el cuarto round se produjeron un par de choques de cabezas y ambos salieron cortados. En cualquier caso, esto no cambió la tónica del encuentro, ya que Acosta siguió siendo más preciso y más activo al ataque y continuó ganando los rounds con su superior cantidad de golpes conectados. Más allá de sus agarres algo insistentes, Villarraga tuvo el mérito de una vez más mantener la compostura y resistir la acumulación de nítidos puños ya fuese lanzando cortas series amagando con avanzar o usando el jab y desplazándose. Aun así, y si bien en el séptimo asalto hubo un nuevo choque de cabezas que dejó a ambos doloridos, en el tramo final en general Acosta continuó haciendo valer su ritmo, y alguna astuta contra de Villarraga no evitó el triunfo del favorito.
Comparativamente con sus pugnas ante Avelar y Sims, quizás Villarraga fuese un paso atrás, pero la pelea no fue carente de utilidad para Acosta. Y es que además de la confianza que le dará obtener un amplio triunfo tras dos peleas en las que se llevó sustos, tuvo ocho rounds de trabajo que podrían servirle positivamente para continuar aprendiendo, evolucionando y preparándose para noches más importantes y para próximos tests a diez rounds.

After some initial exchanges of jabs in the center of the ring, Acosta began to increase his pace and land good right overhands and body shots. For his part, Villarraga tried to counterattack with his lead hook and launched combinations seeking to reduce the pressure. In the fourth round there were a couple of head clashes and both suffered cuts. Compared to Avelar and Sims, Villarraga may have been a step down, but the fight will be useful for Acosta. In addition to the confidence that a wide victory will give him after two fights in which he had to deal with scares, he had eight rounds of work that could positively serve him to continue learning, evolving and preparing for more important nights and for upcoming ten-round tests.
