La confirmación de la próxima rival de la irlandesa, campeona indiscutida del peso ligero, Katie Taylor 21(6KO)-0 dejó bastante decepecionados a muchos, puesto que la argentina Karen Elizabeth “La Burbuja” Carabajal 19(2KO)-0 no es parte de la élite de la división. Sin embargo, siendo justos, no se puede esperar que, tras el tenso, duro y exigente combate contra Amanda Serrano, Taylor se mida consecutivamente a otra oponente del máximo calibre. Además, la parte alta de la categoría del peso ligero femenino no es tampoco tan profunda como se podría pensar.
Así, Taylor encarará este sábado una pelea en el Wembley Arena de Londres, Reino Unido, que será algo así como un baño de masas para que sus fans puedan celebrar con ella su triunfo ante Serrano, que ellos obviamente no consideran polémico. Posteriormente, se espera que Taylor vuelva a encarar en 2023 ambiciosos objetivos.
En este momento, es impensable que Taylor no parta como favorita ante Carabajal, una boxeadora con buenas dimensiones, invicta y voluntariosa pero que tiene una ejecución de golpeo y una gestión táctica inferiores a las de la irlandesa. Por ello, si Carabajal intenta usar su tosco jab y camina lateralmente intentando boxear, las entradas de la sólida Taylor y su mayor habilidad general le permitirán lograr la victoria, mientras que si la argentina arremete y lanza todo lo que tenga podría generar más trabajo, aunque igualmente los compactos golpes de poder de la titular indiscutida deberían decantar de su lado el combate.
Otra prueba ante un púgil agresivo
Situado como 8º IBF y estando en posesión del cinturón de campeón de Europa del peso pluma, el británico Jordan “The Thrill” Gill 27(8KO)-1(1)-1 no está nada lejos de encabezar una velada de Matchroom Boxing disputando una mayúscula pugna, pero es difícil que los miembros de la compañía no tengan dudas sobre qué tipo de rendimiento podría tener el púgil ante cierto tipo de adversarios. Y es que Gill fue derribado tres veces y fue derrotado por Enrique Tinoco, tuvo más dificultades de las previstas ante un César Juárez muy venido a menos y en su último combate una mano determinante le salvó cuando pasaba críticos apuros ante Karim Guerfi.
Por ello, antes de apostar por él con una gran inversión, Matchroom le situará en una prueba de fuego ante un boxeador agresivo, con pegada y que, sobre el papel, es el más difícil al que se ha medido de momento en su carrera. Esto es debido a que en la otra esquina estará el excampeón mundial español Kiko “La Sensación” Martínez 43(30KO)-11(5)-2, quien, pese a su derrota ante los cabezazos de Josh Warrington en marzo, en sus dos anteriores peleas en Reino Unido generó serias dificultades a dos boxeadores con similitudes con Gill como Zelfa Barrett (derrota controvertida) y Kid Galahad (victoria por KOT).
Así, y habiendo pensado Martínez en la posibilidad del retiro tras su último tropiezo, este parece un choque muy interesante y potencialmente entretenido en el que se darán respuestas definitivas sobre el futuro de ambos. Más aún siendo esta una eliminatoria IBF que dejará al ganador rozando un mundial.
Cully y Scotney
En el respaldo destacan también dos nuevas pugnas para dos destacados prospectos de Matchroom como el peso ligero irlandés Gary Cully 14(8KO)-0 y la peso supergallo británica Ellie Scotney 5(0KO)-0, quienes afrontarán también tests muy significativos.
En el caso del primero, el 11º WBA Cully ha tenido un rendimiento excelente en sus últimos tres combates, con los que se ha afianzado como una promesa muy interesante en la división. Así, tras asestarle la derrota más rápida de su carrera al “Títere” Vázquez, Cully afrontará su primer combate internacional ante un joven e invicto con aspiraciones como Jaouad “Le Bombardier Marocain” Belmehdi 16(7KO)-0-3. Éste también está teniendo buenos resultados y, de hecho, en los últimos años ha perdido muy pocos rounds, pero midiéndose a un Cully con mucha capacidad de desborde y con ventaja en pegada es inevitable que Belmedhi parta por detrás en las apuestas a pesar de que quizás sobre el ring pueda superar las expectativas de algunos.
Por otro lado, Scotney encarará su aplazado duelo contra la campeona de Europa del peso supergallo, la española Mary Romero 8(2KO)-2. Aunque la titular encadena todos sus mayores triunfos de forma consecutiva y la local tuvo una actuación poco convincente ante Jorgelina Guanini, Scotney tiene una ventaja en recursos, agilidad, habilidad y gestión táctica que en teoría deberían servirle para ganar por decisión si se mantiene móvil de forma constante y utiliza el jab con firmeza. Por contra, el peor error que podría cometer sería aceptar una pelea física y en la distancia corta en la que la fuerza y potencia de Romero compensarían su lentitud.
La cartelera principal de este evento (que estará compuesta por estos cuatro combates y uno más pendiente de confirmación) será emitida por DAZN el sábado desde las 20:00 en España, las 19:00 en Reino Unido y las 14:00 ET/11:00 PT.

The confirmation of the next opponent of the Irish, undisputed lightweight champion, Katie Taylor 21(6KO)-0 left many quite disappointed, since the Argentinian Karen Elizabeth «La Burbuja» Carabajal 19(2KO)-0 is not part of the elite of the division. However, in all fairness, after the tense, tough and challenging fight against Amanda Serrano, Taylor cannot be expected to face another opponent of the highest caliber back-to-back. Also, the top of the women’s lightweight division isn’t as deep as one might think.
Thus, Taylor will face a fight this Saturday at the Wembley Arena in London, United Kingdom, which will be an opportunity for her fans to celebrate with her the victory against Serrano, which they obviously do not consider controversial. Subsequently, Taylor is expected to face ambitious goals again in 2023.
In this moment, it is unthinkable to not consider Taylor the favorite against Carabajal, a boxer with good dimensions, undefeated and with will, but who has worse punching technique, balance and tactical management than the Irish fighter. Another test against an aggressive fighter
Ranked 8th IBF and owning the European featherweight belt, the British Jordan “The Thrill” Gill 27(8KO)-1(1)-1 is not far from headlining an evening of Matchroom Boxing facing a crucial bout. But it is difficult for the members of that company not to have doubts about what kind of performance the boxer could have against certain type of boxers. It should be remembered that Gill was knocked down three times and was defeated by Enrique Tinoco, that he had more difficulties than expected against a very faded César Juárez and that in his last fight a decisive hand saved him when he was in critical trouble against Karim Guerfi.
For this reason, before making a big investment on him, Matchroom will put Gill in a good test against an aggressive boxer, with a big punch and who, on paper, is the most difficult opponent that has fought so far in his career. This is because in the other corner will be the Spaniard former world champion Kiko “La Sensación” Martínez 43(30KO)-11(5)-2, who, despite his loss against Josh Warrington’s headbutts in March, in his two previous fights in the United Kingdom generated serious difficulties for two boxers with similarities to Gill: Zelfa Barrett (controversial loss) and Kid Galahad (TKO victory).
Thus, and having thought Martínez about the possibility of retirement after his latest setback, this seems like a very interesting and potentially entertaining clash in which definitive answers will be given about the future of both fighters. Cully and Scotney
In the support there will be also two new fights for two outstanding Matchroom prospects such as the Irish lightweight Gary Cully 14(8KO)-0 and the British super bantamweight Ellie Scotney 5(0KO)-0, who will also face significant tests.
In the case of the former, the 11th WBA Cully has had excellent performances in his last three fights, with which he has established himself as a very promising boxer in the division. Thus, after dealing the fastest defeat of his career to «Títere» Vázquez, Cully will face his first international fight against a young and undefeated boxer with aspirations like Jaouad «Le Bombardier Marocain» Belmehdi 16(7KO)-0-3. This opponent is also having good performances and, in fact, in recent years he has lost very few rounds. However facing Cully, who has a great capacity to surpass his opponents and has an advantage in power, it is inevitable to consider Belmedhi the underdog despite the fact that perhaps in the ring he can somewhat exceed the expectations of some.
As for Scotney, she will face her postponed duel against the Spaniard, European super bantamweight champion, Mary Romero 8(2KO)-2. Although the titlist has chained all her biggest wins in a row and the local had an unconvincing performance against Jorgelina Guanini, Scotney has more pugilistic resources, agility, skill and better tactical management, so in theory she should win by decision if she moves constantly and uses the jab firmly. On the other hand, the worst mistake she could make would be accepting a physical, close range fight in which Romero’s strength and power would compensate for her slowness.
