Si el campeón mundial WBC-WBO del peso superpluma Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson 18(9KO)-0 disputase unificaciones ante Joe Cordina (IBF) y Héctor Luis García (WBA) sería claro favorito para imponerse, de modo que, tras su victoria sobre Óscar Valdez, este parecía el siguiente paso lógico para su carrera. Con todo, aunque el púgil expresó su voluntad de convertirse en campeón indiscutido, su promotor Bob Arum ha manifestado su rechazo a organizar más unificaciones en la categoría para Stevenson, ya que, según él, esas peleas poco o nada aportarían para su boxeador y no generarían ni interés entre el público ni dinero para los participantes.
Quizás Arum pueda cambiar su punto de vista considerando la mejora en status que podría lograr su boxeador a limitado riesgo, pero señalando Stevenson que si empieza a tener problemas para dar el peso superpluma ascenderá de división, el promotor deberá tomar pronto una decisión definitiva sobre los siguientes pasos del estadounidense.
Por el momento, cinco meses después de anotarse la victoria más significativa de su carrera al superar a Óscar Valdez, el viernes Stevenson peleará en el Prudential Center de su ciudad, Newark (Estados Unidos), por primera vez desde julio de 2019, siendo visto su rival en cierto modo como un paso adelante. Esto es así debido a que se enfrentará al oro olímpico brasileño Robson Conceição 17(8KO)-1, quien recordemos que perdió por controvertida decisión precisamente ante un Valdez que acababa de dar positivo en control antidopaje.
O sea, valorándose que Conceição debería haber salido con el brazo en alto de la pugna ante Valdez, para muchos realmente el brasileño es sobre el papel un reto más exigente para Stevenson. De todos modos, ni esto es exactamente así ni Conceição es tampoco una enorme amenaza para el monarca.
Por un lado, las comparaciones indirectas pueden llevar a lecturas erróneas y no necesariamente una buena actuación de Conceição ante Valdez implica que vaya a tener un rendimiento superior al mexicano ante Stevenson. Por otro lado, siendo objetivos, no parece que en el peso superpluma actual haya un boxeador que tenga una gran probabilidad de victoria sobre el campeón unificado más allá de un golpe de poder aislado o de un gravísimo descuido de Stevenson.
Dicho de otra forma, teniendo en cuenta la enorme eficacia defensiva, los excelentes reflejos y la precisión de un Stevenson que merece un puesto en el top 10 libra por libra, todos sus posibles rivales en la división partirían claramente por detrás en las apuestas. Además, aunque Conceição tiene evidentes cualidades, no es ni el tipo de boxeador con gran pegada y mucha presión que podría generar estilísticamente más dificultades a Stevenson, ni es el tipo de prodigio táctico que podría manejarse contra el titular en un duelo de francotiradores.
De hecho, Conceição posee un estilo intermedio, en el cual explota sus recursos técnicos y su destreza con sus desplazamientos y su selección de golpes, aunque sin pelear de manera defensiva, y suele intentar situarse en el centro del ring y mantenerse activo con sus combinaciones de rectos, aunque sin una continua agresividad. Con todo, si un boxeador no es capaz de sostener de forma constante una abrumadora presión contra Stevenson o, contrariamente, generarle grandes dificultades por velocidad de manos y astucia con golpes aislados, parece destinado a perder.
Ciertamente, Conceição tiene más altura y alcance que Stevenson y este último en sus peleas más recientes ha renunciado muchas veces a su boxeo más defensivo, quedándose en la distancia media para intentar evitar críticas a su conservadurismo. Pero aunque puede haber elementos a favor del retador, si no es que Stevenson comete un gigantesco error estratégico o se sobreconfía de manera total, permitiendo que Conceição trabaje cómodamente con sus rectos, debería poder lograr una clara victoria en base a su excelente destreza.
Y es que si usa su boxeo más elusivo y contragolpeador debería poder dominar las acciones, mientras que si renuncia a él sólo necesitará usar sus secos jabs, sus centelleantes combinaciones y sus acciones defensivas más sencillas para terminar decantando de su lado la mayoría de rounds y salir del ring con sus cinturones.
El enfrentamiento Stevenson-Conceição, y una pelea para el peso ligero, plata olímpico estadounidense, Keyshawn Davis 5(4KO)-0 enfrentándose la mexicano Omar Tienda 25(18KO)-5(1), serán emitidas por ESPN, ESPN Deportes y ESPN+ el viernes desde las 22:00 ET/19:00 PT. If the WBC-WBO world super featherweight champion Shakur “Fearless” Stevenson 18(9KO)-0 would fight in unifications against Joe Cordina (IBF) and Héctor Luis García (WBA) he would be clear favorite to win, so after his victory over Óscar Valdez this seemed the next logical step for his career. However, although the boxer stated his desire to become undisputed champion, his promoter Bob Arum has refused the idea of organizing more unifications in the division for Stevenson, since, according to him, that fights would contribute little or nothing to his boxer and would generate neither interest among the public nor money for the participants.
Perhaps Arum can change his point of view considering the improvement in status that his boxer could achieve at limited risk, but pointing out Stevenson that if he begins to have problems with the weight he will move up, the promoter must soon make a final decision on the American’s next steps.
For the moment, five months after scoring the most significant victory of his career by beating Óscar Valdez, on Friday Stevenson will fight in the Prudential Center of his hometown, Newark (United States), for the first time since July 2019, with his rival being seen as a step forward. This is so because he will face Brazilian Olympic gold medalist Robson Conceição 17(8KO)-1, who lost by controversial decision precisely against Valdez (the Mexican had just tested positive in an anti-doping control).
In other words, considering that Conceição should have come out of the fight against Valdez with his arm raised, for many the Brazilian is really a more demanding challenge for Stevenson on paper. However, this is not exactly the case, nor is Conceição an enormous threat to the champion.
On the one hand, indirect comparisons can lead to erroneous analysis and a good performance by Conceição against Valdez does not necessarily imply that he will outperform the Mexican against Stevenson. On the other hand, being objective, it does not seem that in the current super featherweight division there is a boxer who has a great chance of victory over the unified titlist beyond a decisive isolated power shot or a very serious oversight by Stevenson.
In other words, considering the excellent defensive efficiency, reflexes and precision of Stevenson, who deserves a place in the top 10 pound for pound, all his possible opponents in the division would be obvious underdogs. Also, while Conceição has obvious qualities, he’s neither the kind of high-pressure puncher who could give Stevenson more stylistical difficulties, nor is he the kind of tactical prodigy who could outsmart the titleholder in a duel of sharpshooters.
In fact, Conceição has an intermediate style, in which he exploits his technical resources and his ability with his movements and his selection of shots, although without fighting defensively, and usually tries to position himself in the center of the ring and stay active with his combinations of straight punches, although without continuous aggressiveness. Still, if a boxer can’t consistently sustain overwhelming pressure against Stevenson or, conversely, generate him great difficulty with hand speed and astuteness with isolated punches, he seems destined to lose.
Certainly, Conceição has more height and reach than Stevenson, and in his most recent fights the latter has often given up his more defensive boxing, staying in the middle distance trying to avoid criticism for assuming too few risks. But while there may be elements in favor of the challenger, if Stevenson doesn’t make a huge strategic mistake or if he isn’t totally overconfident, allowing Conceição to work comfortably with his straight hands, he should be able to achieve a clear victory with his great skill.
That is to say, if he uses his most elusive and counter-punching boxing he should be able to dominate the actions, while if he wants to hold his ground, he will still only need to use his sharp jabs, his fast combinations and his simplest defensive actions to end up winning most of the rounds and walk out of the ring with his belts.
The Stevenson-Conceição matchup, and a lightweight bout for American Olympic silver medalist Keyshawn Davis 5(4KO)-0 taking on the Mexican Omar Tienda 25(18KO)-5(1), will air on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ on Friday from 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT. In the United Kingdom the card will be broadcast by Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Arena from 1:00 a.m., while in other countries can be watched through a Fite PPV.
