Se está diciendo que el respaldo del evento Usyk-Joshua II es excelente y que difícilmente se podrán encontrar en esta temporada ejemplos equiparables en cuanto a calidad global. Con todo, dejando de lado si esta afirmación es cierta o exagerada, si el acompañamiento del cartel de este sábado en el Superdome de Jeddah, Arabia Saudí, es interesante esto es única y exclusivamente por dos buenos enfrentamientos eliminatorios que precederán al choque estelar, ya que por lo demás las pugnas tienen poco o ningún sentido.
“El Animal” ante su gran oportunidad
Como le sucedió en su día al peso semipesado Artur Beterbiev, el peso pesado croata Filip “El Animal” Hrgović 14(12KO)-0 ha tenido que esperar meses y meses antes de que algún clasificado IBF se atreviese a enfrentarse a él, dado que es visto como una de las mayores amenazas emergentes en la división máxima. Al fin, este sábado, en el semifondo del Usyk-Joshua, Hrgović alcanzará su gran oportunidad en forma de una eliminatoria final IBF del peso pesado ante el plata olímpico chino Zhilei “Big Bang” Zhang 24(19KO)-0-1, 15º ranqueado que ha sido el único que se ha decidido a aceptar el reto.
Por lo tanto, además de ser una prueba de fuego para Hrgović ante su primer contrincante con aspiraciones y una oportunidad para medir mejor de qué está hecho, el ganador se convertirá en uno de los aspirantes obligatorios del campeón mundial unificado que saldrá del Usyk-Joshua. Así, y siendo Hrgović y Zhang dos invictos pegadores en lucha por alcanzar una cotizadísima pelea titular en la división del peso pesado, este parece un choque con muchos alicientes.
En él, como no podría ser de otro modo, el amplio favorito es Hrgović, dado que, más allá de su evidente ventaja en velocidad, posee una mayor precisión, más recursos tácticos, una mejor defensa y una superior gestión de las energías. Así, si no es que tener que encarar demasiados rivales de nivel bajo ha terminado disminuyendo el rendimiento del croata o comete un error decisivo ante el duro pegador chino, Hrgović debería poder lograr una victoria que definitivamente le haga irrumpir como uno de los principales candidatos a empezar a relevar a la actual generación de miembros de la élite del peso pesado.
“Mundo” a un paso de Beterbiev
La otra eliminatoria del evento será WBC y del peso semipesado, siendo los contendientes el excampeón mundial británico Callum “Mundo” Smith 28(20KO)-1 y el bronce olímpico francés Mathieu Bauderlique 21(12KO)-1(1). Después de haberle asestado un terrorífico knockout al exretador mundial Lenin Castillo debutando en el peso semipesado, Smith es tan favorito para derrotar a Bauderlique como Hrgović lo es ante Zhang, algo en lo que influyen también algunas poco convincentes actuaciones del galo y la descomunal ventaja en experiencia de “Mundo”.
Sin embargo, aunque en principio el sólido y potente despliegue del espigado Smith ante un Bauderlique mucho menos determinante con los golpes de poder debería permitirle al primero vencer este choque, la gran pregunta es si el ganador estará preparado para lo que le espera. Y es que venciendo la eliminatoria se convertirá en retador obligatorio ni más ni menos que del temido campeón unificado Artur Beterbiev, un boxeador con una formidable capacidad para trabajar cuerpo a cuerpo, precisamente lo que se considera el punto débil de Smith.
Resto del respaldo
Por lo demás, y a falta de que se detalle la cartelera principal definitiva, en el evento se producirán estos tres mal emparejados choques: el excampeón supermedio Badou “The Ripper” Jack 26(16KO)-3(1)-3 seguirá evitando riesgos en el peso crucero midiéndose a un Richard Rivera 21(16KO)-0 sin experiencia ante rivales ni siquiera cercanos al top 15 y al que debería barrer si quiere mostrar posibilidades en la división; la peso supergallo Ramla Ali 6(1KO)-0 disputará otro combate extremadamente sencillo ante una Crystal Garcia Nova 10(10KO)-2(1) de nivel muy modesto; y el exaspirante mundial Andrew “The Beast” Tabiti 19(15KO)-1(1) peleará en el peso pesado ante un James Wilson 7(6KO)-0-1 que no ha pasado de las peleas a seis rounds y que no boxea desde hace tres años y medio.
La velada Usyk-Joshua II será emitida en Estados Unidos por DAZN el sábado desde las 12:00 ET/9:00 PT y en Reino Unido será ofrecida a través de un PPV de Sky desde las 17:00. En España la emitirá DAZN desde las 19:00.

Some are saying that the support for the Usyk-Joshua II event is excellent and that it will be difficult to find in this season comparable examples in terms of quality. However, leaving aside whether this statement is true or very exaggerated, if the undercard of this Saturday bill at the Jeddah Superdome, Saudi Arabia, is interesting, this is solely due to two good eliminator matches that will precede the main clash, since the rest of the bouts have little or no meaning.
«The Animal» faces his great opportunity
Like happened years ago with the light heavyweight Artur Beterbiev, the Croatian heavyweight Filip “El Animal” Hrgović 14(12KO)-0 has had to wait many months before any IBF ranked fighter dared to face him, as he is seen as one of the biggest emerging threats in the top of the division. Finally, this Saturday, in the Usyk-Joshua co-feature, Hrgović will get his big break through an IBF final eliminator against the Chinese Olympic silver medalist Zhilei “Big Bang” Zhang 24(19KO)-0-1, 15th ranked boxer that has been the only fighter who has accepted this challenge.
So, in addition to being a decisive test for Hrgović against his first opponent with aspirations, and a chance to better gauge what he’s made of, the winner will become one of the mandatory challengers for the unified world champion that will come out of the fight Usyk-Joshua. Thus, and with Hrgović and Zhang being two undefeated punchers fighting to reach a coveted title fight in the heavyweight division, this seems like a bout with many incentives.
In it, as it could not be otherwise, the wide favorite is Hrgović, given that, beyond his obvious advantage in speed, he has greater precision, more tactical resources, better defense and superior management of the energies. So, unless having faced too many low-level rivals has ended up affecting the Croatian’s performance, or unless he makes a decisive mistake against the hard-hitting Chinese, Hrgović should be able to achieve a victory that will definitely make him one of the main candidates to start replacing the current generation of members of the heavyweight elite.
“Mundo” one step away from Beterbiev
The other eliminator of the event will be by the WBC and in the light heavyweight division, with the contenders being the British former world champion Callum “Mundo” Smith 28(20KO)-1 and the French Olympic bronze medalist Mathieu Bauderlique 21(12KO)-1(1). Having dealt a terrifying knockout to former world title challenger Lenin Castillo in his light heavyweight debut, Smith is as much a favorite to defeat Bauderlique as Hrgović is against Zhang, something that is also influenced by some past unconvincing performances from the Frenchman and by Mundo’s huge quality experience advantage.
However, although in principle the solid and powerful display of the tall Smith against a boxer like Bauderlique, with worse management of the significant punches, should allow the former to win this clash, the big question is whether the winner will be prepared for what awaits him. Whoever comes out on top in this eliminator will become a mandatory challenger for the feared unified champion Artur Beterbiev, a fighter with a formidable ability to work at close range, precisely what is considered Smith’s weak point.
Rest of the card
For the rest, and in the absence of detailed information about the definitive main card, the event will have three poorly matched fights: former super middleweight champion Badou “The Ripper” Jack 26(16KO)-3(1)-3 will continue avoiding risks at cruiserweight by facing Richard Rivera 21(16KO)-0, who has never faced a rival close to the top 15 and whom he should overwhelm if he wants to show possibilities in the division; super bantamweight Ramla Ali 6(1KO)-0 will face another extremely easy fight against Crystal Garcia Nova 10(10KO)-2(1), boxer with very low level; and former world title challenger Andrew “The Beast” Tabiti 19(15KO)-1(1) will fight at heavyweight against James Wilson 7(6KO)-0-1, who hasn’t gone past the six rounders and who has been inactive for three and a half years.
The Usyk-Joshua II evening will be broadcast in the US by DAZN on Saturday from 12:00 ET/9:00 PT, while in the UK it will be aired through a Sky PPV from 17:00.
