Previa: Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete encara tercera defensa de su título mundial del peso pluma contra Eduardo Báez

Durante su reinado en el peso supergallo el mexicano Emanuel “Vaquero” Navarrete 35(29KO)-1 tuvo un ritmo de defensas inaudito en el boxeo actual, con una media de una pelea cada dos meses. Sin embargo, una vez que ascendió al peso pluma y capturó el título mundial WBO, el margen de tiempo entre puestas en juego se ha ido alargando hasta el punto que su tercera defensa, que la encarará este sábado en el Pechanga Arena de San Diego, Estados Unidos, se producirá diez meses después de su victoria sobre Joet González.
Que deje más margen entre combates parece obedecer a diversos factores, como que su situación económica está bastante establecida y que los retos en el peso pluma son más exigentes y duros. Y es que hay que recordar que todas sus defensas en los 55,3 kg (122 lb) fueron antes del límite, algunas extremadamente sencillas, mientras que sus tres triunfos en el peso pluma llegaron al duodécimo asalto y sólo uno de ellos terminó entonces con un KOT.
De todos modos, aunque “El Vaquero” no aplasta ya a su oposición como en la categoría inferior y aunque se está hablando de un posible duelo ante Shakur Stevenson que tendría una dificultad casi insalvable para el mexicano, Navarrete sigue siendo uno de los grandes nombres del peso pluma actual y partirá como muy claro favorito para vencer este sábado a su compatriota Eduardo “El Gemelo” Báez 21(7KO)-2-2.
Dicho aspirante es un peleador con mucha garra, agresivo y que sin duda lo dejará todo en el ring, siendo sus logros más notables sus triunfos sobre los invictos prospectos Narek Abgaryan (olímpico) y Abimael Ortiz y sus únicos tropiezos a los puntos y ante contrincantes como Mauricio Lara y Ra’eese Aleem. Además, Báez tiene ventaja en altura sobre un Navarrete acostumbrado a pelear contra rivales más pequeños.
Con todo, aunque por su constancia, determinación y capacidad de reacción bajo fuego Báez garantiza una pelea con trabajo para casi cualquiera en la categoría, Navarrete tiene elementos a su favor que hacen de esperar que pueda retener su cinturón. Dejando de lado que su heterodoxia (especialmente materializada a través de poco convencionales trayectorias de golpeo) crea serias dificultades para sus oponentes, Navarrete tiene una ventaja en potencia muy grande que, incluso si no le permitiese dañar al duro Báez, podría ser trascendental para convencer a los jueces y darle los asaltos.
Así, a no ser que Navarrete padezca uno de sus serios desajustes tácticos cediendo la iniciativa y termine presionado en las cuerdas, si se hace respetar con sus golpes de poder evitando el ensogado y usa su pegada para no permitir que Báez impresione con su cadencia de puños, el monarca debería lograr retener su cinturón por tercera vez.

Como esta velada de Top Rank/ESPN coincidirá en el tiempo con la organizada por PBC, que contará con dos mundiales y con nombres más conocidos, posiblemente no tendrá la atención que merece. Aun así, en el evento destacan tres interesantes choques. En el coestelar, dos invictos peso wélter como el estadounidense Giovani “Gallo de Oro” Santillán 29(16KO)-0 y el mexicano Julio “Canelito” Luna 19(10KO)-0-2 se verán las caras en una pugna trascendental para intentar llevar sus carreras a una nueva dimensión en la complicadísima categoría.
Por otro lado, el olímpico mexicano Lindolfo Delgado 15(13KO)-0 y el insigne prospecto, de enorme pegada, Omar “Pollo” Aguilar 24(23KO)-0 se enfrentarán en un combate del peso superligero que por nivel podría haber sido la pelea estelar y que determinará cuál de estos dos interesantes boxeadores se gana un intenso apoyo promocional en persecución del estrellato.
Además, dos peso superpluma estadounidenses con cualidades pero que llegan de derrotas como Xavier Martínez 17(11KO)-1 y Alejandro Guerrero 12(9KO)-2 buscarán regresar a la senda del triunfo y el peso medio Nico Ali Walsh 5(4KO)-0 disputará una revancha ante Reyes Sánchez 7(3KO)-2, al que sólo venció por decisión mayoritaria el pasado diciembre.
Los combates Navarrete-Báez, Santillán-Luna y Ali Walsh-Sánchez serán emitidos en Estados Unidos por ESPN, ESPN+ y ESPN Deportes desde las 22:00 ET/19:00 PT (4:00 de la madrugada en España), mientras que el respaldo previo se ofrecerá a través de ESPN+ desde aproximadamente las 19:00 ET/16:00 PT (la 1:00 en hora peninsular). En España el tramo principal del evento se podrá visualizar a través de un PPV de Fite que se iniciará hacia las 2:00 de la madrugada del sábado al domingo.
