Si tomamos como punto de partida los meses posteriores al parón boxístico de 2020, los peso superwélter Magomed “Black Lion” Kurbanov 22(13KO)-0 y Patrick Teixeira 31(22KO)-3(1) estaban en una excelente situación. Ambos ocupaban buenos puestos en la lista mundial WBO y habían dejado atrás malos momentos con victorias importantes. En el caso de Kurbanov, sus dificultades ante Stepan Horvath habían sido en cierta medida olvidadas con una serie de triunfos entre los que destacó el obtenido ante Ismail Iliev, mientras que Teixeira se había recuperado de su derrota ante Curtis Stevens sobre todo con un triunfo contra pronóstico sobre Carlos Adames.
Con todo, cuando empezó 2021 todo cambió para mal para estos boxeadores. La pretendida irrupción en la élite de Kurbanov en su prueba de fuego ante Liam Smith terminó con una muy controvertida victoria que sólo hizo que disminuir su prestigio y tras la cual no ha vuelto a pelear (mayo de 2021). En cuanto a Teixeira, las cosas fueron todavía peores, ya que vio su brevísimo reinado como titular WBO superwélter terminado por una abrumadora derrota ante Brian Castaño, desmoralizante resultado que fue sucedido por una derrota por descalificación el pasado abril cuando intentaba regresar a la senda del triunfo.
Así, con Kurbanov desaparecido de las listas y con Teixeira aguantando a duras penas un puesto de 15º WBC, este sábado en el estadio KRK “Uralets” de Ekaterimburgo, Rusia, ambos combatirán en un duelo crucial intentando enderezar sus trayectorias y reengancharse a la lucha por el mundial.
Teniendo en cuenta como el “imbatido” Kurbanov ha esquivado varias balas en decisiones de los jueces peleando como local, es difícil pensar que un Teixeira que no logra una victoria por knockout desde 2015 podrá ser lo suficientemente dominador como para lograr una eventual victoria a los puntos como visitante. En este sentido, se debe destacar también que, al margen de las ventajas que haya podido recibir, Kurbanov es un boxeador fuerte, con una base técnica de cierto nivel y que cuando está activo con sus manos puede llegar a ser bastante efectivo.
Aun así, a menudo el ruso busca controlar las pugnas tácticamente y al contragolpe con resultados insuficientemente buenos en lugar de intentar imponer sus golpes de poder al ataque, mientras que en defensa deja huecos bastante evidentes. Por ello, si Kurbanov no sale dispuesto a presionar con firmeza y si Teixeira guarda ambición y se ha preparado bien, el brasileño perfectamente podría crear una pelea competitiva si aprovecha su alcance y usa sus rectos con la suficiente frecuencia.
Silyagin espera su momento
Por ahora el peso supermedio ruso Pavel Silyagin 10(5KO)-0 ha mostrado un boxeo tan hábil y eficiente que, a falta de una mayúscula prueba de fuego, es razonable considerarle un aspirante de élite en la división. No obstante, el contexto político no hace fácil que el invicto pueda encarar ahora mismo una eliminatoria o el tipo de encuentro crucial que le pueda acercar a una pelea titular. En cualquier caso, Silyagin no piensa mantenerse inactivo y, mientras espera a que se pueda materializar un choque de gran calibre, el ruso afrontará una interesante pelea de adquisición de experiencia ante el mexicano José de Jesús Macías 28(14KO)-10(1)-4.
Este boxeador ha demostrado su valía y su nivel en múltiples peleas, por ejemplo empatando contra el prospecto Andriiy Velikovskiy o derrotando a los entonces ranqueados Steven Butler y Francis Lefraniere, así que Silyagin deberá andarse con ojo para que un descuido no le pueda pasar factura. De todos modos, si Silyagin despliega todo su potencial boxístico a través de constantes entradas y salidas, variadas trayectorias de golpeo y certeros y muy peligrosos puños, debería lograr una nueva sólida victoria que afiance todavía más la impresión de que podría ser todo un reto para la cumbre de la división.
Al margen del Kurbanov-Teixeira y del Silyagin-Macías, el evento ofrecerá un choque para el peso crucero y, oro olímpico, Evgeny Tishchenko 9(6KO)-1, que tratará de seguir alejándose de su decisiva derrota ante Thabiso Mchunu peleando contra el actual campeón de Rusia de la división Kureysh Sagov 6(2KO)-1(1).

Taking as a starting point the months after the boxing break in 2020, the super welterweights Magomed “Black Lion” Kurbanov 22(13KO)-0 and Patrick Teixeira 31(22KO)-3(1) were in an excellent situation. Both were in good positions on the WBO ranking and had left behind bad moments in their careers with important victories. In the case of Kurbanov, his difficulties against Stepan Horvath had been somewhat forgotten with a series of triumphs, among which stood out the one obtained over Ismail Iliev, while Teixeira had recovered from his loss against Curtis Stevens specially with an upset victory over Carlos Adames.
However, when 2021 began, everything changed for the worse for these boxers. Kurbanov’s intended access into the elite in his crucial test against Liam Smith ended with a very controversial victory for the Russian that only diminished his prestige, result after which he has not fought again (May 2021). As for Teixeira, things were even worse, as his brief reign as WBO super welterweight titleholder ended by a landslide defeat to Brian Castaño, a demoralizing result that was followed by a disqualification loss last April when he tried to get back to winning ways.
Thus, with Kurbanov disappeared from the rankings and with Teixeira barely holding his position as 15th WBC, this Saturday at the KRK «Uralets» Stadium in Yekaterinburg, Russia, both will fight in a crucial duel trying to stabilize their careers and to enter again in the battle for reaching a world title bout.
Considering how the “unbeaten” Kurbanov has dodged several bullets in judges’ decisions fighting at home, it’s hard to think that Teixeira, who hasn’t scored a knockout since 2015, could be dominant enough to pull off an eventual points victory as a visitor. In this sense, it should also be noted that, apart from the favorable verdicts, Kurbanov is a strong boxer, with a technical base of some quality and that when he is active with his hands can become quite effective.
Still, the Russian often seeks to control fights tactically and counterpunching with insufficiently good results instead of trying to impose his power shots attacking, while on defense he has quite obvious breaches. So if Kurbanov doesn’t press hard and Teixeira has ambition and has prepared well, the Brazilian could very well create a contested fight taking advantage of his reach and using his straight punches frequently.
Silyagin waits for his opportunity
So far the Russian super middleweight Pavel Silyagin 10(5KO)-0 has shown such skillful and efficient boxing that, in the absence of a major test, it’s reasonable to consider him an elite contender in the division. However, right now the political context does not make it easy for the unbeaten to reach an eliminator or the type of crucial match that could bring him closer to a title fight. In any case, Silyagin does not intend to remain inactive and, while he waits for a big fight to materialize, he will face an interesting bout to gain experience against the Mexican José de Jesús Macías 28(14KO)-10 (1)-4.
This boxer has proven his competence and his level in multiple clashes, for example in his draw against the prospect Andriiy Velikovskiy or defeating the then-ranked boxers Steven Butler and Francis Lefraniere, so Silyagin will have to be very careful. In any case, if the Russian displays all his boxing potential going in and out constantly and throwing his varied, accurate and dangerous punches, he should achieve another great victory that will further solidify the impression that he could be quite a challenge for the top of the division.
Apart from the bouts Kurbanov-Teixeira and Silyagin-Macías, the event will offer a new fight for the cruiserweight, Olympic gold medalist, Evgeny Tishchenko 9(6KO)-1, who will try to continue moving away from his decisive loss to Thabiso Mchunu by fighting Kureysh Sagov 6(2KO)-1(1), the current Russian national champion of the division.
