Previa: El combate Alimkhanuly vs. Dignum elegirá al retador (o sucesor) del campeón del peso medio Demetrius Andrade

Con el campeón mundial WBO del peso medio Demetrius Andrade “lesionado”, con su pelea ante Zach Parker en el peso supermedio habiendo perdido el reconocimiento oficial del organismo y teniendo en cuenta la tendencia del monarca estadounidense a perder tiempo con inactividades larguísimas provocadas por sus propias malas decisiones, no está claro qué futuro le aguarda al cinto de la Organización en los 72,6 kg (160 lb).
Es precisamente por esta incertidumbre por la que es tan importante el enfrentamiento que este sábado disputarán el oro mundial kazajo Zhanibek “Qazaq Style” Alimkhanuly 11(7KO)-0 y el oro inglés y miembro de la selección británica Danny Dignum 14(8KO)-0-1, dado que en juego estará un cinturón interino WBO del peso medio.
Es decir, si Andrade vuelve a desperdiciar muchos meses de su carrera y no hace frente a su defensa obligatoria ante el ganador del Alimkhanuly-Dignum, el estadounidense podría perder su cinto a la vez que el titular interino se convertiría en campeón de pleno derecho, como le sucedió recientemente al ya exmonarca John Riel Casimero y al nuevo campeón Paul Butler.
Por otro lado, en una era en la que siguen existiendo muchas protestas de los aficionados por el hecho de que a menudo los boxeadores invictos o con aspiraciones se rehuyen, es de agradecer que Alimkhanuly y Dignum den un paso adelante para acometer este enfrentamiento. De todos modos, esto tiene mérito sobre todo en el caso de Dignum, a quien se le pueden encontrar muchos defectos boxísticos pero no falta de valentía.
Hay que subrayar que Alimkhanuly está surgiendo como una enorme amenaza en la división con su boxeo extremadamente eficaz y su cadena de cinco knockouts obtenidos con asombrosa sencillez, lo que le ha supuesto que ni Munguía ni Andrade hayan aceptado pelear contra él. En cambio, Dignum, pese a tener todavía mucho que pulir en su boxeo y aunque sólo ha peleado con un boxeador ranqueado (Andrey Sirotkin, ante el que empató), no ha desechado esta oportunidad en la que partirá muy por detrás en las apuestas.
Evidentemente, que un púgil de gran carrera amateur ofrezca una serie de grandes actuaciones en su primer avance no significa que ese boxeador sea imbatible, siendo muchos los prospectos destacados que han sufrido derrotas en momentos inesperados. Con todo, y no perdiendo de vista esto, parece muy difícil que Alimkhanuly vaya a ser derrotado en este combate.
Aunque el zurdo Dignum posee fortaleza, pegada y sólidos golpes de poder en la distancia media, “Qazaq Style” es también zurdo, tiene un fantástico control de la distancia, muchísima astucia y una afiladísima mano izquierda que usa con precisión en directo y uppercut.
Por ello, y midiéndose a un Dignum que ha mostrado importantes brechas defensivas y que ha quedado tocado en dos de sus últimos tres combates, da la sensación de que si Alimkhanuly crea su habitual dominio táctico desde la distancia larga y media-larga debería poder castigar determinantemente a su contrincante, o al menos lograr una gran diferencia de puntos a su favor, para hacerse con una nueva impresionante victoria.
Respaldo principal del evento
El combate coestelar de esta velada de Top Rank desde el Resorts World de Las Vegas, Estados Unidos, se desarrollará en el peso ligero entre dos boxeadores en situaciones muy diferentes: uno de ellos será el veterano excampeón superpluma Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring 23(11KO)-3(2) y el otro el joven e invicto Jermaine “The Technician” Ortiz 15(8KO)-0-1.
Así, un púgil con renombre pero en la última fase de su carrera y que llega de una derrota (ante Shakur Stevenson) intentará mostrar que puede lograr nuevos éxitos en una división superior enfrentándose a un boxeador que ha dejado algunas buenas actuaciones recientes pero al que le falta un gran nombre en su récord para irrumpir en la parte alta del peso ligero.
Este interesante choque será precedido por una pelea ante un rival por confirmar para el peso superligero, y olímpico estadounidense, Delante “Tiger” Johnson 3(2KO)-0, siendo los tres enfrentamientos citados parte de una emisión de ESPN, ESPN+ y ESPN Deportes que se iniciará a las 20:00 ET/17:00 PT, las 2:00 de la madrugada del sábado al domingo en España.

With the WBO middleweight world champion Demetrius Andrade «injured», with his fight against Zach Parker in the super middleweight having lost the Organization’s official sanction and taking into account the tendency of the American titlist to waste time with very long inactivities caused by his own bad decisions, it is not clear what future awaits to the WBO belt of the 160 lb division.
It is precisely this uncertainty which makes so important this Saturday’s bout between the Kazakh, world gold medalist, Zhanibek «Qazaq Style» Alimkhanuly 11(7KO)-0 and the English gold medalist, and member of the team GB, Danny Dignum 14(8KO)-0-1, since an interim WBO middleweight belt will be at stake.
In other words, if Andrade wastes many months of his career again and does not face his mandatory defense against the winner of the Alimkhanuly-Dignum, the American could lose his belt at the same time that the interim title holder would become a full-fledged champion, as recently happened to former monarch John Riel Casimero and the new champion Paul Butler.
On the other hand, in an era where there continues to be much outcry from fans over the fact that undefeated fighters often avoid each other, it’s good to see that Alimkhanuly and Dignum stepped up to take on this match. Still, it is Dignum who deserves more praise for accepting this hard fight.
Alimkhanuly is emerging as a huge threat in the division with his extremely effective boxing and his string of five knockouts obtained with astonishing ease, which has meant that neither Munguia nor Andrade have accepted to fight him. On the other hand, Dignum, despite still having a lot to improve in his boxing and although he has only fought with one ranked boxer (Andrey Sirotkin), has not rejected this opportunity in which he will be an obvious underdog.
Obviously, just because a fighter with a great amateur career has a streak of great performances in his first advance in professional boxing doesn’t mean that he is unbeatable, with many top prospects suffering losses at unexpected times. All in all, it seems very unlikely that Alimkhanuly could be defeated in this fight.
Although the southpaw Dignum possesses strength, punch and solid power shots in the middle range, “Qazaq Style” is also southpaw, has fantastic control of the distance, a lot of cunning and a sharp left hand that he uses with precision in straight punch and uppercut.
For this reason, and facing a rival that has shown important defensive flaws and that has been hurt in two of its last three fights, it seems that if Alimkhanuly creates his usual tactical dominance from long and mid-long distance, he should be able to punish decisively his opponent, or at least achieve a great difference of points in his favor, to get a new impressive victory.
Main undercard
The co-main event of this Top Rank evening from the Resorts World in Las Vegas, United States, will be a lightweight match between two boxers in very different situations: one of them will be the veteran former super featherweight champion Jamel «Semper Fi» Herring 23(11KO)-3(2) and the other the young and unbeaten Jermaine “The Technician” Ortiz 15(8KO)-0-1.
Thus, a boxer with prestige but in the last phase of his career who is coming from a loss (against Shakur Stevenson) will try to show that he can achieve new successes in a higher division by facing a boxer who has had some good recent performances but who lacks a big name in his record to break into the top of lightweight division.
This interesting clash will be preceded by a new fight (against a rival to be announced) for the super lightweight, American Olympian, Delante «Tiger» Johnson 3(2KO)-0. These three bouts will be part of a broadcast by ESPN, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes which will start at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT, 1:00 a.m. in UK Time.
