El boxeo todavía no se ha sacado de encima los dañinos cintos de subcampeón WBA y este organismo ya ha ideado un nuevo mecanismo para confundir y crear caos en los rankings: la sucesión de varias eliminatorias en una misma división, sin ningún tipo de etiqueta adicional, que dificultan estar seguro totalmente de quién debe acceder al mundial a continuación.
Esto se está poniendo de manifiesto en esta misma semana, puesto que el pasado sábado “Zurdo” Ramírez y Boesel pelearon en una eliminatoria WBA del peso semipesado, mientras que el próximo sábado Joshua Buatsi 15(13KO)-0 y Craig “Spider” Richards 17(10KO)-2-1 combatirán en otra eliminatoria de la Asociación en la misma categoría. Teóricamente siendo Boesel extitular interino y número 1 del ranking cuando fue batido por el 2º Ramírez, el mexicano debería ser el aspirante obligatorio en lugar del ganador del duelo entre Buatsi (3º) y Richards (7º), pero con la WBA nunca se sabe…
En fin, el Buatsi-Richards encabezará una interesante velada de Matchroom Boxing y DAZN desde el O2 Arena de Londres, Reino Unido, con varios combates con alicientes. Empezando por el estelar, en él el olímpico Buatsi tratará de medir sus posibilidades en una eventual pelea mundialista ante el monarca Dmitriy Bivol midiéndose a un boxeador que fue rival de éste. En la pelea Bivol-Richards el aspirante fue completamente dominado por el hábil boxeo del ruso, pero cartulinas horriblemente ajustadas llevaron a que muchos sobrevalorasen la actuación del británico.
Sea como sea, Richards es un boxeador motivado, con un buen y largo jab y que se puede hacer correoso con su estilo táctico en la distancia larga intercalado por inesperados contragolpes peligrosos. Así, Buatsi, que pese a sus victorias contundentes ha cometido varios desajustes estratégicos importantes en sus peleas recientes, debería evitar una pelea de bajo ritmo en la distancia larga (que es la que más le conviene a su contrincante) y usar su rápido jab no buscando igualar al de Richards, sino como una forma de preparar golpes de poder en la distancia media que podrían ser cruciales para su éxito.
Cameron aguarda unificación
Matchroom Boxing y DiBella Entertainment pactaron un torneo en el peso superligero femenino para coronar a una campeona indiscutida, pero aunque a continuación se debía disputar la final entre la británica Chantelle Cameron 15(8KO)-0 y la estadounidense Kali Reis, parece que este combate de unificación total terminará aplazándose unos meses más. Por el momento, la monarca WBC-IBF Cameron buscará poner fin a siete meses de inactividad, sumar experiencia y comparar su rendimiento al de Katie Taylor midiéndose a la exmonarca argentina Victoria “La Leona” Bustos 23(0KO)-6.
La visitante es una púgil aguerrida y resistente que en los últimos ocho años sólo ha padecido derrotas ante nombres como Cecilia Braekhus, Erica Farías y la citada Taylor. No obstante, en estos tropiezos capturó pocos rounds y Cameron está impresionando con su muy sólido y versátil boxeo, en el que está mostrando gran capacidad de desborde con sus golpes de poder y sus compactas combinaciones. Así, y no teniendo Bustos ni una victoria antes del límite, el triunfo de Cameron es sin duda el resultado más probable.
Babić en el peso puente
Cuando surgió la idea del peso puente WBC en seguida quedó claro que la categoría se iba a llenar, como mínimo inicialmente, de boxeadores mediocres que ni podían aspirar al mundial ni a derrotar a los top 15 del peso crucero o del peso pesado. Es exactamente por este motivo por el que Matchroom Boxing ha decidido situar al croata Alen Babić 10(10KO)-0 en esa nueva “división” esperando que puedan alargar un poco más su racha de victorias y que pueda llegar a una pelea “titular” antes de que alguien le noquee.
Quien intentará el sábado aprovechar sus descomunales fallos y descuidos defensivos será el polaco Adam Balski 16(9KO)-1, un peso crucero que en su día pareció un interesante prospecto pero que ha perdido impulso desde que el durísimo Mateusz Masternak le derrotó por amplia decisión unánime. Sobre el papel Balski no es ni mucho menos peor que Mark Bennett, Eric Molina o David Spilmont, los últimos rivales de Babić, y no sería para nada sorprendente si pudiese causarle problemas serios. Aun así, de momento Balski parte por detrás del croata en las cuotas de apuesta de cara a esta pelea que debería estar llena de acción y golpes de poder.
Davies y Scotney
La cartelera principal la completarán dos tests para púgiles británicos. Uno de ellos será el peso superligero Robbie Davies Jr. 22(15KO)-3(1), que después de lograr un inesperado rápido knockout contra “Hank” Lundy dejando atrás varias flojas actuaciones, tratará de acceder al ranking WBA y mostrar regularidad midiéndose a un complicado rival como el olímpico estadounidense Javier Molina 22(9KO)-4. “El Intocable” Molina tiene buena técnica, ha logrado algunas destacables victorias y, aunque viene de dos derrotas, estas llegaron ante rivales de mayor nivel que Davies como el prospecto “Mono” Ramos y el excampeón José Pedraza.
En el restante duelo, la peso gallo Ellie Scotney 4(0KO)-0 se enfrentará a la última oponente de la campeona WBA Ebanie Bridges, la argentina, ahora extitular, María Cecilia Román 16(0KO)-6-1, buscando tantear un futuro asalto al mundial.
Esta velada será emitida por DAZN el sábado desde las 20:00 en hora española, las 19:00 en Reino Unido y las 14:00 ET/11:00 PT.

Boxing has not yet gotten rid of the harmful WBA secondary belts, but this organization has already devised a new way to confuse and create chaos in the rankings: the succession of several eliminators in the same division, without any additional label, which makes it difficult to be totally sure about who should access to the world championship.
This is becoming clear this week, since last Saturday “Zurdo” Ramírez and Boesel fought in a WBA light heavyweight eliminator, while next Saturday Joshua Buatsi 15(13KO)-0 and Craig “Spider” Richards 17(10KO)-2-1 will fight in another WBA eliminator in the same division. Theoretically, as Boesel was the former interim titleholder and the number 1 in the ranking when he was beaten by the 2nd Ramírez, the Mexican should be the mandatory challenger instead of the winner of the duel between Buatsi (3rd) and Richards (7th), but with the WBA you never know…
In any case, the bout Buatsi-Richards will headline an evening of Matchroom Boxing and DAZN from the O2 Arena in London, United Kingdom, with some interesting fights. Starting with the main one, in it the Olympian Buatsi will try to measure his chances in a possible world title fight against the monarch Dmitriy Bivol by battling against a former challenger. In the fight Bivol-Richards, the latter was completely dominated by the Russian’s skilful boxing, but horribly narrow scorecards led many to overestimate the Briton’s performance.
Be that as it may, Richards is a motivated fighter, with a good long jab and who can be tricky with his tactical style from long distance. Thus, Buatsi, who despite his knockout victories has made several strategic mistakes in his recent fights, should avoid a slow-paced long-distance fight and use his quick jab not looking to match Richards’, but as a way to set up power shots in the middle distance that could be crucial to his success.
Cameron awaits unification
Matchroom Boxing and DiBella Entertainment organized a tournament in the female super lightweight division to crown an undisputed champion, but although the final between the British boxer Chantelle Cameron 15(8KO)-0 and the American Kali Reis should have been next, it seems that total unification will end up being postponed for a few more months. For now, Cameron will seek to put an end to seven months of inactivity, add experience and make comparisons with Katie Taylor by fighting against the Argentinian former champion Victoria «La Leona» Bustos 23(0KO)-6.
The visitor is a brave and resistant fighter who in the last eight years has only suffered defeats against Cecilia Braekhus, Erica Farías and the aforementioned Taylor. However, in these setbacks she captured very few rounds and Cameron is impressing with her very solid and versatile boxing, in which she is showing great ability with her power punches and her combinations. Thus, and not having Bustos a single stoppage victory, Cameron’s win is undoubtedly the most likely result.
Babić at bridgerweight
When the idea of the WBC bridgerweight came up, it was immediately clear that the division was going to be filled, at least initially, with mediocre boxers who could neither aspire to the world championship nor to beat the top 15 boxers at cruiserweight or heavyweight. It is exactly for this reason that Matchroom Boxing has decided to place the Croatian Alen Babić 10(10KO)-0 in this new «division» hoping that he can extend his winning streak a little more and that he can reach a «world title» fight before someone knocks him out.
Who will try to take advantage of his huge defensive flaws and oversights on Saturday will be the Polish Adam Balski 16(9KO)-1, a cruiserweight who once seemed an interesting prospect but who has lost momentum since the tough Mateusz Masternak defeated him by wide unanimous decision. On paper Balski is not worse than Mark Bennett, Eric Molina or David Spilmont, Babić’s last rivals, and it wouldn’t be at all surprising if he could cause him serious problems. Even so, at the moment Balski is behind the Croatian in the betting odds ahead of this fight that should be full of action and power shots.
Davies and Scotney
The main card will be completed by two tests for British fighters.
