El veterano Giovanni De Carolis dio la sorpresa y noqueó a Scardina. Mary Romero retuvo en espantoso duelo ante Cecchi

Estaba claro que el invicto peso supermedio italiano Daniele “King Toretto” Scardina 20(16KO)-1(1) estaba en la cuerda floja desde hacía ya bastantes combates, siendo cuestión de tiempo hasta que padeciese un tropiezo. Sin embargo, no se esperaba que su primera derrota fuese contra el veterano italiano Giovanni De Carolis 31(15KO)-10(2)-1, que lleva años perdiendo rendimiento y que está en la última fase de su carrera. Aun así, De Carolis logró derribar dos veces a Scardina antes de lograr un KOT en el quinto asalto y una de las mayores victorias de su carrera.
En el primer round Scardina comenzó caminando y usando el jab, pero su boxeo está tan lleno de defectos que ni siquiera pudo mantenerse alejado de su oponente, por lo que decidió cambiar de táctica y cargar al ataque, recibiendo un gancho diestro a la contra que le dejó tocado justo antes de la campana final. Ya en el segundo asalto, ambos boxeadores fueron estremecidos por ganchos de mano adelantada en intercambios, habiéndose vuelto entonces las acciones bastante intensas.
El tercer episodio fue más calmado, pero en el cuarto ambos volvieron a conectar claros golpes de poder, siendo Scardina quien estaba teniendo mejores resultados antes de ser dañado por un potente cruzado diestro que fue sucedido por una andanada de brutales hooks que le llevó al tapiz. El combate evidentemente se tenía que haber parado ahí, pero el árbitro quiso proteger el récord invicto de Scardina haciendo una cuenta larga y dejándole seguir aunque se tambaleaba. Además, en el inicio del quinto asalto se perdió tiempo incomprensiblemente. En cualquier caso, estos segundos no sirvieron de nada al favorito, que fue golpeado por potentes curvos hasta que volvió a caer y se tuvo que parar el choque.
La cara de Eddie Hearn tras el combate reflejaba un hecho: que el plan que tenían para clasificar bien en las listas mundiales a Scardina antes de usarlo como peldaño para Lerrone Richards ha fracasado. Y es que De Carolis perdió contra el propio Richards de forma amplísima y una revancha resulta inviable. De todos modos, igualmente ahora De Carolis recibirá un buen lugar en los rankings y Matchroom Boxing tiene otros peso supermedio, por lo que es muy posible que los matchmakers de la compañía puedan explotar provechosamente la inesperada nueva situación.
Romero retuvo en horrendo duelo
Matchroom Boxing y OPI escogieron como semifondo de la velada de este viernes un campeonato de Europa femenino del peso supergallo entre la española Mary Romero 8(2KO)-2 y la italiana Maria Cecchi 7(2KO)-1, ya que ambas venían de buenas actuaciones y, en principio, podían ofrecer un buen combate. Contrariamente, la pelea fue absolutamente espantosa, siendo un recital de todo lo que no debería hacerse en un ring. En cualquier caso, Romero retuvo su cinturón por decisión unánime y cartulinas de doble 100-88 y un 98-90.
Teóricamente el combate fue un choque de estilos entre el boxeo desde la distancia larga de Cecchi y la persecución de Romero, pero realmente fue un enfrentamiento feísimo, embarradísimo, muy desordenado y repleto de acciones más allá del reglamento. En algunos momentos iniciales la zurda Cecchi llegó con algunos buenos rectos que fueron contestados más tarde por hooks de Romero, pero todo ello quedó enterrado por forcejeos, incontables choques de cabezas (varios de los provocados por Cecchi tuvieron poco de involuntarios), golpes después del break, etc., que causaron los silbidos del público.
En cualquier caso, cuando el duelo se asentó en el cuerpo a cuerpo la fuerte Romero pudo sacar réditos a base de insistencia y mejor gestión del boxeo en corta. La italiana de vez en cuando conectó alguna contra certera, pero era golpeada por más frecuentes hooks ante los que poco más hacía que agarrarse. Cecchi comenzó a frustrarse mucho y a desordenase aún más, por lo que, desesperada, tras ser golpeada al darse la vuelta, asestó un repulsivo cabezazo deliberado que debió haberle supuesto la descalificación, aunque sólo le costó dos puntos. Totalmente perdida, Cecchi fue golpeada duramente en el noveno asalto por los ganchos de Romero, mientras que la local no logró a penas éxitos en un último intento en el décimo asalto.

It was clear that undefeated Italian super middleweight Daniele “King Toretto” Scardina 20(16KO)-1(1) was walking on thin ice for quite a few fights, and that his first defeat was only a matter of time. However, it was not expected that his first loss would be in his duel against the Italian veteran Giovanni De Carolis 31(15KO)-10(2)-1, who has been losing level for years and who is in the last stretch of his career. Still, De Carolis managed to drop Scardina twice before scoring a fifth-round TKO and obtaining one of the biggest wins of his career.
In the first round Scardina walked and used his jab, but his boxing is so flawed that he couldn’t even stay away from his opponent, so he decided to change tactics and charge forward, receiving a counter right hook that hurt him before the final bell. Already in the second round, both boxers were rocked by left hooks in exchanges, as the actions had become quite intense.
The third round was calmer, but in the fourth both landed clear power shots again, with Scardina having the better results before being really hurt by a right hook followed by a barrage of punches that took him to the mat. It was obvious that the fight needed to stop there, but the referee wanted to protect Scardina’s undefeated record by doing a long count and letting him continue even though he was stumbling. Also, at the start of the fifth round the referee lost time incomprehensibly. In any case, these seconds were of no use to the favorite, who was hit by powerful hooks until he fell again and the bout had to be stopped.
Eddie Hearn’s face after the fight reflected a fact: that the plan they had to rank Scardina well in the world lists before using him as a stepping stone for Lerrone Richards has failed. In these sense, it must be remembered that De Carolis lost very widely against Richards, making a rematch unfeasible. Anyway, still now De Carolis will get a good position in the rankings and Matchroom Boxing has other super middleweights, so it’s very possible that the matchmakers of the company could exploit the unexpected situation.
Romero retained in horrendous duel
Matchroom Boxing and OPI chose as the co-feature for this Friday’s evening a super bantamweight European championship between the Spaniard Mary Romero 8(2KO)-2 and the Italian Maria Cecchi 7(2KO)-1, since both were coming from good performances and, in principle, they could offer a good fight. On the contrary, the fight was absolutely awful, as the boxers did everything that should not be done in a ring. In any case, Romero retained her belt by unanimous decision and scorecards of double 100-88 and one 98-90.
Theoretically, the fight was a clash of styles between Cecchi’s long-distance boxing and Romero’s pursuit, but it was really an ugly, entangled and very messy bout full of actions beyond the rules. In some initial moments, the southpaw Cecchi landed some good straight punches that were answered later by hooks by Romero, but all of it was buried by clinches, countless head clashes, etc., which caused the booing of the public.
In any case, when the duel became a physical fight, the strong Romero was able to use her tenacity and her better close range boxing. The Italian occasionally landed some accurate counters, but she was hit by more frequent hooks to which she did little more than clinch. Cecchi began to get very frustrated and lost order even more, so in desperation, after being hit when she turned, she hit her rival with a deliberate headbutt that should have gotten her disqualified, although it only cost her two points. Totally lost, Cecchi was hit hard in the ninth round by Romero’s hooks, while the local was barely successful in a last attempt in the tenth round.
