Denzel Bentley became British middleweight champion with victory over undefeated Linus Udofia

The result has generated very different opinions, some stating that it was a very unfair result, others that the verdict was completely correct and the rest that a draw would have been better. In any case, the fact is that two of the judges considered that Denzel Bentley 16(13KO)-1(1)-1 had done enough to beat the undefeated Linus Udofia 17(9KO)-1, regaining the British middleweight belt he had already owned. The scorecards for this split decision were 116-112, 115-113 and 114-115.

The conflicting views were essentially due to the fact that there were two clear phases in the fight. In general terms, in the first Udofia was able to box from distance and use his ability to connect the best hands against Bentley that, again, did not have an adequate tactical management in that part. However, approximately in the second half, the former champion knew how to remedy the situation and began to attack very aggressively, taking his opponent to the ropes and hitting him with clear power shots. That way Bentley even make Udofia’s knee to touch the canvas briefly in the eight round, though the referee did not ruled a knockdown.

Taking into account that development of the fight, who won it depends on several factors, but especially on how many rounds are given to the boxers in the sections that they did not dominate and on what margin they achieved in the part that was favorable to them.

That is, for example, if someone considers that Bentley captured two or three rounds of the first half with his eventual powerful attacks and that he mostly controlled the second half, the victory could be his. On the other hand, if it were considered that Udofia prevailed in almost all the first six rounds and during the remaining six he captured some isolated rounds with his good counterpunches, the result would be favorable to him.

Be that as it may, all of this only shows that it was a very contested match and that the BBBofC would do well ordering a rematch that could resolve the controversy. Otherwise, Bentley will have to face a mandatory defense against Brad Pauls, who won a British title eliminator in that same bill.
