Katie Taylor retuvo sus cuatro cinturones mundiales del peso ligero en igualada y trepidante pelea ante Amanda Serrano

La irlandesa Katie Taylor 21(6KO)-0 ha tenido tres grandes noches en su carrera deportiva: su controvertida victoria en la final de los Juegos Olímpicos de 2012 ante Sofiya Ochigava, su controvertida coronación como campeona indiscutida del peso ligero ante Delfine Persoon y su controvertido triunfo en su histórico enfrentamiento ante la puertorriqueña Amanda Serrano 42(30KO)-2-1. Efectivamente, la pasada noche Taylor sumó un éxito trascendental sobre Serrano, si bien el resultado ha generado notable polémica entre los aficionados, considerando muchos que éste no fue acertado.
En una pugna en la que un empate sería perfectamente justificable y en la que se podría puntuar el quinto asalto como un 10-8, Glen Feldman le dio únicamente tres rounds a Serrano, Guido Cavallieri sólo le dio un punto menos a Taylor que él y Benoit Russell vio a la puertorriqueña como ganadora por un asalto de diferencia. Así, con puntuaciones de 97-93, 96-93 y 94-96, Taylor ganó por decisión dividida.
En cualquier caso, y centrándonos en lo estrictamente pugilístico, en el mayor combate de la historia del boxeo femenino ambas ofrecieron una pugna sensacional, emocionante y en la cual sus virtudes quedaron perfectamente de manifiesto.
La ejecución táctica inicial de Taylor fue perfecta, manteniendo las distancias, realizando rápidas entradas y salidas, variando la dirección del giro y contragolpeando con precisión con ganchos zurdos y directos diestros a la zurda Serrano. De todos modos, ese grado de eficacia era muy difícil de mantener durante diez asaltos ante una rival tan peligrosa como la puertorriqueña, que en el tercer round llegó con algunos amenazantes rectos y que en el cuarto empezó a desplegar más su repertorio ofensivo ante Taylor, que tuvo que recurrir al clinch para frenar su progresión.
Los éxitos de Serrano alcanzaron su punto más alto en el quinto asalto, cuando Taylor fue encerrada en las cuerdas y recibió brutales golpes de poder rectos y zurdos que ensangrentaron su rostro, siendo posteriormente dañada por series de curvos que la dejaron muy tocada, tambaleante y a punto de caer. En el sexto episodio la irlandesa estuvo astuta con algunas contras y se produjeron extraordinarios intercambios, pero Serrano continuó su trabajo de demolición, sacudiendo a Taylor con sus izquierdazos.
Pese a estas graves dificultades, sorprendemente la campeona se pudo recuperar lo suficiente como para, desde el séptimo asalto, volver a poner movilidad a su boxeo y escoger oportunos contragolpes ante una Serrano que, de nuevo, tuvo dificultades lidiando con el dinamismo de su adversaria. Finalmente, “The Real Deal” llegó con algunos golpes de poder cruzados en el noveno round, aunque Taylor le contestó con manos más claras a la contra, mientras que en el décimo asalto ambas cruzaron golpes en feroces y épicos intercambios en los que la irlandesa terminó quedando tocada pero siguió replicando con dureza.
Durante muchos meses todas las conversaciones después de los combates de Taylor se han centrado en cuándo se iba a producir su pelea contra Amanda Serrano, pero ahora que ésta ya ha tenido lugar la campeona unificada WBA-WBC-WBO-IBF del peso ligero y Matchroom Boxing seguramente pondrán sus miras en otro gran objetivo a medio-largo plazo más allá de la posibilidad de una revancha y de alguna eventual defensa voluntaria de sus cinturones.
Desde hace tiempo se señala que Taylor podría ascender al peso superligero para intentar coronarse campeona indiscutida también en esa división. Con todo, como todavía no ha terminado el torneo de Matchroom en la citada categoría, habrá que esperar a que Chantelle Cameron y Kali Reis unifiquen todos los cinturones para que se empiece a dibujar más claramente la posibilidad de un duelo entre la ganadora y la irlandesa.

The Irish Katie Taylor 21(6KO)-0 has had three great nights in her sports career: her controversial victory in the final of the 2012 Olympic Games against Sofiya Ochigava, her controversial coronation as undisputed lightweight champion against Delfine Persoon and her controversial victory in her historic confrontation against the Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano 42(30KO)-2-1. Indeed, last night Taylor added to his record a transcendental success over Serrano, although the result has generated notable controversy among fans, many considering that it was not fair.
In a fight in which a draw would be perfectly justifiable and in which the fifth round could be scored as 10-8, Glen Feldman only gave Serrano three rounds, Guido Cavallieri only gave Taylor one point less than him and Benoit Russell saw the Puerto Rican as the winner by a round difference. Thus, with scores of 97-93, 96-93 and 94-96, Taylor won by split decision.
In any case, and focusing strictly on the boxing aspect, in the greatest match in the history of female boxing, both offered a sensational and exciting fight in which their virtues were perfectly evident.
Taylor’s early tactical execution was flawless, keeping the distance, coming in and out quick, changing the direction of her circling and counter-punching the southpaw Serrano with precise left hooks and straight right hands. In any case, that degree of efficiency was very difficult to maintain for ten rounds against a rival as dangerous as the Puerto Rican, who in the third round connected some threatening straight punches and who in the fourth began to display more of her offensive resources against Taylor.
Serrano’s successes reached a high point in the fifth round, when Taylor was cornered on the ropes and received brutal power shots that bloodied her face, subsequently being hurt by combinations of hooks that left her badly punished, wobbly and about to fall. In the sixth round the Irishwoman was clever with some counters and extraordinary exchanges took place, but Serrano continued her demolition work, rocking Taylor with her left hands.
Despite these serious difficulties, surprisingly the champion was able to recover enough to, from the seventh round, regain mobility and choose well timed counterattacks against Serrano, who once again had difficulties dealing with the dynamism of her opponent. Finally, «The Real Deal» landed some powerful punches in the ninth round, although Taylor answered with clearer hands, while in the tenth round both exchanged in fierce and epic clashes in which the Irish ended up being hurt but continued to reply harshly.
For many months all the talk after Taylor’s bouts has been focused on when her fight against Amanda Serrano was going to take place, but now that the bout has ended the unified WBA-WBC-WBO-IBF lightweight champion and Matchroom Boxing will surely set their sights on another great objective in the mid-long term, beyond the possibility of a rematch and some eventual voluntary defense.
It has been pointed out for some time that Taylor could move up to super lightweight to try to be crowned undisputed champion in that division as well. However, since the Matchroom tournament in that division has not yet finished, we will have to wait for Chantelle Cameron and Kali Reis to unify all the super lightweight belts before the possibility of a duel between the winner and the Irish begins to be drawn more clearly.
