Haga lo que haga el británico Liam Smith 31(18KO)-3(1)-1 habrá un sector de analistas y aficionados que no le darán el crédito que merece, algo que ha sucedido durante toda su carrera por motivos inciertos. No obstante, una vez más el excampeón mundial Smith logró anoche, en el respaldo del Taylor-Serrano, una muy meritoria victoria, en esta ocasión ante el exmonarca mundial estadounidense Jessie Vargas 29(11KO)-4(1)-2, que padeció la primera derrota antes del límite de su carrera por un KOT en el décimo asalto tras ser severamente castigado.
Como su oponente ascendía desde el peso wélter y venía de una larga inactividad, Smith salió al ring buscando presionar y desgastar a Vargas, aunque éste inicialmente tuvo algunos buenos resultados al contragolpe con duros jabs y uppercuts. Sin embargo, con el paso de los minutos el trabajo ofensivo del británico fue a más, conectando fuertes directos, ganchos zurdos y cruzados diestros que enrojecieron y ensangrentaron el rostro de un Vargas golpeado estático contra las cuerdas.
Vargas no se dejó arrastrar hacia la derrota sin ofrecer resistencia, sino que replicó con toda la dureza que pudo con hooks al cuerpo y cortos rectos al rostro, pero el hostigamiento de Smith se volvió realmente intenso, anotando derechazos, uppercuts de mano adelantada y hooks abajo que estaban mermando claramente a su contrincante. Así, pasada la mitad pareció necesario que el equipo de Vargas empezase a pensar en poner fin al duelo.
De todos modos, ni su equina ni el árbitro se compadecieron del púgil. De hecho, ni siquiera lo hizo el médico cuando Vargas fue revisado al inicio del décimo asalto tras ser brutalmente golpeado en el round precedente. With his opponent moving up from welterweight and coming from a long layoff, Smith started the fight trying to pressure and wear down Vargas, though the latter initially had some good results counterpunching with hard jabs and uppercuts. However, as the minutes went by, the British’s offensive work increased, connecting strong right hands, left hooks and left uppercuts that reddened and bloodied the face of Vargas, who was beaten against the ropes.
Vargas didn’t accept defeat without putting up a fight, since he answered as hard as he could with hooks to the body and short straight punches to the face, but Smith’s attacks turned really intense, landing right hands, lead uppercuts and hooks down that were clearly breaking his opponent. So Smith was well ranked but not well enough to be able to access a world championship for one of the vacant belts. The resounding success against Vargas may allow Smith to move a little closer to the top, but it will be difficult for him to reach the position of 2nd in the contested rankings behind the mandatory challengers already chosen.
