Nottingham Arena, Nottingham, UK. Featherweight.

Olympic bronze medalist Michael Conlan 16(8KO)-1(1) was on his way to the biggest victory of his career, having brutally knocked out Leigh “Leigh-thal” Wood 26(16KO)-2(1) in the first round and rocking him countless times over eleven rounds. However, Wood showed a resistance to punishment that was simply supernatural, since even when he was hurt, contrary to logic, he replied with even greater explosiveness and power, finally also achieving a horrendous knockout that threw a broken Conlan out of the ring.

Visibly nervous and feeling the pressure of fighting at home in a bout much bigger than he thought he would reach, Wood took the initiative and attacked with some haste, not having much success due to Conlan’s good defense. Instead, the Irishman landed a terrific left hand that dropped Wood spectacularly right at the end of the first round. As the episode was over, Wood managed to hold on, but in the second round “Mick” punished his rival with his hooks up and down until he was close to winning by TKO.

Still, Wood was unwilling to give up, and though he was being staggered constantly, he fought back, suffering Conlan also a cut from a headbutt. But this did not deconcentrate the visitor, who kept order under the fierce attacks of his rival and connected with excellent hooks to the body and very accurate straight shots to the head. This punches caused a nosebleed in Wood and rocked him in the third round, although the British pressed desperately and threw frequent combinations cornering Conlan, who used good defense against the ropes.

In the fifth round Conlan landed formidable left hands in midrange and hard hooks to the body, in the seventh he connected great counter hooks up and down at close range and in the eighth he shook his opponent with left overhands. Even so, Wood continued to advance, attacking with much more tenacity than efficiency, adding excitement to the duel but failing to reduce the distance on the cards against Conlan, who also showed his technique with sensationally measured jabs. In the tenth round Wood threw a hard offense with combination of straight punches and hooks, although in the eleventh Conlan exploited his precision to hit his rival with hard hands before slipping as a left punch came from his opponent, the referee ruling a knockdown. This was not the worst for the visitor, since in the last round a straight punch brutally knocked him out and took him out of the ring.

On paper, this victory gives Wood access to a mandatory fight against featherweight titleholder Leo Santa Cruz under the WBA reduction of champions process. However, Matchroom Boxing will have alternative options for this fighter. In any case, the important thing now is that Conlan recovers well from the horrendous knockout he suffered.
