Majestic Casino, Panama City, Panama. WBA World Light Flyweight Championship.

For years the Mexican Jéssica Nery Plata 28(3KO)-2 has been one of the most dangerous and outstanding uncrowned boxers in the lightest divisions of women’s boxing, something she showed by beating rivals such as Ibeth Zamora, María Guadalupe Bautista , Silvia Torres, María Salinas and Nancy Franco and suffering her only losses against Esmeralda Moreno and Kenia Enríquez. After all of that, last night Plata definitively certified her place in the elite by defeating an extop 10 pound for pound and queen of the light flyweight division for many years as the Argentine Yéssica “Tuti” Bopp 37(17KO)-3. Nery Plata’s victory was by split decision and scorecards of 97-93, 96-94 and 94-96.

The match was even and contested, as there were oscillations in the possession of the initiative and both had moments of success. In any case, in general, Bopp was the one who tried to move more and to surprise with chosen offensives (which lasted variably) against Plata, who tried to press more looking for power shots.

In this situation, Bopp managed to make things difficult for her opponent connecting clear counterpunches and onrushing hooks, and sometimes working hard at close range, but Plata was the one who seemed to display a more consistent and regular boxing, scoring the more significant punches with good straight right hands and left hooks. Thus, although she missed many hands, with his hard fists Plata was able to impress the judges more and gave the feeling that his work was superior so, also being attentive on defense at times, she achieved the margin to win the decision and be crowned.

Despite the defeat, Bopp is still a boxer capable of beating the vast majority of boxers in the category, although after 40 fights and with her boxing having slowed down, it is difficult not to wonder when it will be time for her to stop fighting now that, after not suffering defeats in 8 years, she has been beaten two times in six months. For his part, Plata, 27 years olds, enters his first reign at the best moment of his career and from now on she should reach new important bouts, although she must be very careful with her tendency to end up in very even fights and try to introduce improvements in her boxing to try to win more clearly.
