Como el enfrentamiento estelar de la velada de Matchroom Boxing/DAZN de este sábado desde el Pechanga Arena de San Diego, Estados Unidos, o sea el Chocolatito-Martínez, resultará tan interesante y potencialmente entretenido, muchos pasarán por alto el respaldo de este cartel, más aún teniendo los combates claros favoritos. No obstante, en las peleas de acompañamiento participarán nombres con cierto relieve y proyección y, si bien son de esperar sus victorias, al menos quizás podamos extraer alguna lectura más sobre sus boxeos y comprobar sus estados de forma antes de que alcancen pugnas significativas.
Lara regresa tras revancha ante Warrington
El enfrentamiento de desquite entre el mexicano Mauricio “Bronco” Lara 23(16KO)-2(1)-1 y Josh Warrington (al que venció por sorpresa en el primer choque) no pudo resultar más decepcionante, puesto que el segundo duelo terminó en un rápido empate técnico por corte. De eso ha pasado ya medio año, y Lara, 3º IBF y 4º WBO pluma que espera alcanzar una pugna trascendental en esta temporada, necesita un comvbate para recuperar moral, rodarse y recuperar impulso, motivos por los que se medirá al estadounidense Emilio Sánchez 19(12KO)-1(1).
Como sucede después de un fin de semana con múltiples resultados contra pronóstico, muchos se sentirán incómodos ante la idea de descartar las opciones de triunfo de los no favoritos, especialmente en un caso como el de Sánchez, que tuvo una buena carrera amateur (fue oro nacional junior), que es joven, que está motivado y que, si bien no tiene experiencia ante el top, ha tenido algunas buenas actuaciones ante boxeadores veteranos.
No obstante, Sánchez también tuvo una rápida derrota (ante la piedra de toque Eugene Lagos) y Lara, además de contar con una vital ventaja en potencia, teóricamente ha demostrado estar al nivel de la élite con su contundente triunfo sobre Josh Warrington. Por lo tanto, la victoria de Lara es el resultado a esperar a pesar de que Sánchez pueda tener rounds positivos si boxea con orden y astucia al contragolpe.
Un extraño ranking
Se supone que el vencer a un clasificado debería conllevar situarse por encima de él en el ranking, si bien la WBA no ha aplicado esta lógica elemental en el caso del bronce olímpico Souleymane Cissokho 14(9KO)-0, que pese a haber derrotado a Kieron Conway se encuentra posicionado tres puestos por debajo de él. Además, se debe destacar que en esa pelea el invicto ganó un cinturón menor de ese organismo y desde entonces ha sumado otra importante victoria ante el ruso Ismail Iliev con el mismo título menor en juego, mientras Conway sólo ha logrado una victoria de recuperación.
Sea como sea, Cissokho, 12º WBA, parece tener un muy eficaz boxeo lineal que le podría permitir vencer a los puntos a bastantes de los ranqueados, algo que su equipo sabe perfectamente y por lo que ya planea una pugna importante para dentro de unos meses. Antes de ella, Cissokho realizará un rodaje y una prueba a su capacidad de lidiar con la presión enfrentándose al mexicano Roberto Valenzuela Jr. 19(19KO)-2(1), boxeador sin triunfos destacables y con una derrota en cinco rounds ante Alexis Rocha pero que posee un 100% de knockouts, que es todavía muy joven (22 años) y que, a pesar de su previsible derrota, es de suponer que debería ofrecer un mayúsculo esfuerzo en esta mayor oportunidad de su carrera hasta la fecha.
Fierro y Pacheco
En principio en la cartelera principal también se integrarán dos combates en el que los favoritos deberían sumar experiencia valiosa de cara a futuros encuentros. Por un lado, el peso ligero mexicano, 3º WBO, Ángel “Tashiro” Fierro 19(15KO)-1-1 afrontará una prueba a su pegada y a su capacidad de definición ante el veterano mexicano de probada valía Juan Carlos Burgos 34(21KO)-6-2, que en los últimos tres años ha aguantado la distancia y ha ganado rounds en peleas contra los invictos Starling Castillo, Xavier Martínez, Héctor Tanajara y Devin Haney. Por lo tanto, Burgos debería darle una pelea exigente a un Fierro que será favorito por su superior capacidad ofensiva pero que también es un púgil que necesita pulir bastante varios aspectos de su boxeo.
Por otro lado, el prospecto del peso supermedio Diego Pacheco 13(10KO)-0 disputará uno de los tests más interesantes de su todavía corta trayectoria ante el correoso kosovar-estadounidense Genc Pllana 9(5KO)-3-1, un púgil con un estilo incomodante, sin derrotas antes del límite, que ha dado alguna sorpresa y que ha tenido varios resultados controvertidos desfavorables. Así si Pllana ofrece su mejor versión, Pacheco debería tener que trabajar y ajustar para lograr la victoria, que podría obtener igualmente si explota su claridad de golpeo y su ventaja en dimensiones.

As the main match of this Saturday’s Matchroom Boxing/DAZN evening from the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, United States, that is the bout Chocolatito-Martínez, will be so interesting and potentially entertaining, many will overlook the support of this card, even more so having the fights clear favorites. However, in the undercard will participate names with a certain prominence and projection and, although their victories are to be expected, at least perhaps we can extract some more information about their boxing and check their fitness before they reach significant fights.
Lara returns after rematch against Warrington
The rematch confrontation between the Mexican Mauricio «Bronco» Lara 23(16KO)-2(1)-1 and Josh Warrington (who he defeated by surprise in the first match) could not have been more disappointing, since the second duel ended in a quick technical draw by a cut. Half a year has passed since then, and Lara, 3rd IBF and 4th WBO featherweight who hopes to achieve a crucial fight this season, needs a fight to recover morale, tune-up and regain momentum, reasons why he will face the American Emilio Sánchez 19 (12KO)-1(1).
As happens after a weekend with multiple upsets, many will be uncomfortable with the idea of discarding the chances of victory for the underdogs, especially in a case like that of Sánchez, who had a good amateur career (he was junior national gold medalist), who is young, motivated and, although he has no experience against the top, has had some good performances against experienced boxers.
However, Sanchez also suffered a quick loss (to Eugene Lagos) and Lara, in addition to having a decisive advantage in power, theoretically has shown that he is at elite level with his victory over Josh Warrington. Therefore, Lara’s victory is the result to be expected despite the fact that Sánchez can have good rounds if he boxes with order and cunning with counterattacks.
A strange ranking
It is assumed that beating a qualifier should lead to being above him in the ranking, although the WBA has not applied this elemental logic in the case of Olympic bronze medalist Souleymane Cissokho 14(9KO)-0, who despite having defeated Kieron Conway is positioned three spots below him. In addition, it should be noted that in that fight the undefeated won a minor belt of that organization and since then he has added another important triumph against the Russian Ismail Iliev with the same title at stake, while Conway has only achieved a recovery victory.
Be that as it may, Cissokho, 12th WBA, seems to have a very effective boxing that could allow him to beat on points many of the ranked fighters, something that his team knows perfectly well and for which they are already planning an important bout in the near future. Before it, Cissokho will have a tune-up and a test to his ability to deal with pressure by facing Mexican Roberto Valenzuela Jr. 19(19KO)-2(1), a boxer without notable wins and with a loss in five rounds against Alexis Rocha but who has a 100% knockout ratio, is still very young (22 years old) and that, despite his foreseeable defeat, presumably should offer a major effort in this greatest opportunity of his career to date.
Fierro and Pacheco
Two other matches will also be part of the main card, bouts in which favorites will add valuable experience. On the one hand, Mexican lightweight, 3rd WBO, Ángel “Tashiro” Fierro 19(15KO)-1-1 will face a test to his punching power against a tough veteran as Juan Carlos Burgos 34(21KO)-6-2, who in the last three years has gone the distance and won rounds in fights against four undefeated boxers: Starling Castillo, Xavier Martinez, Hector Tanajara and Devin Haney. Therefore, Burgos should give a demanding fight to Fierro, who will be favored to win for his superior offensive ability but who is also a fighter who needs to polish several aspects of his boxing.
On the other hand, super middleweight prospect Diego Pacheco 13(10KO)-0 will have one of his most interesting development fights in his still short career against the tough Kosovar-American Genc Pllana 9(5KO)-3-1, a fighter with an uncomfortable style, without defeats by stoppage, with some upset victories and who has suffered some controversial verdicts. So if Pllana offers his best version, Pacheco should have to work and adjust to get the win, which he should get if he exploits his precision with power punches and his size advantage.
