Previa: El campeón mundial superligero Regis Prograis afronta primera defensa ante Zorrilla

Una semana después de que Sunny Edwards debutase con Matchroom Boxing, y tres semanas después de que Jack Catterall también disputase su primera pelea con la compañía, este sábado será el turno del campeón mundial WBC del peso superligero Regis “Rougarou” Prograis 28(24KO)-1 de empezar a llevar a la práctica su contrato con la empresa de Eddie Hearn. Prograis, considerado por muchos el actual número 1 de la división, encabezará una velada desde su ciudad natal, en concreto desde el Smoothie King Center de Nueva Orleans, Estados Unidos, enfrentándose al puertorriqueño Danielito “El Zorro” Zorrilla 17(13KO)-1.
En este combate Prograis es muy claro favorito para ganar, ya que su mezcla de potencia y heterodoxa técnica, su versatilidad, su fuerza y su resistencia parecen factores demasiado importantes como para que un boxeador bastante por debajo del nivel de la élite como Zorrilla pueda dar la sorpresa. Efectivamente, recordando su pobre desempeño ante Ruslan Madiyev, que le presionó con intensidad, y sus irregulares pero en general insuficientes resultados ante los directos de Arnold Barboza Jr., parece improbable que Zorrilla vaya a poder neutralizar la amenaza que supone Prograis, quien llega de vapulear a José “Chon” Zepeda.
De hecho, si Prograis sostiene una presión firme, seguramente pueda encerrar, desgastar y dañar a su retador, que tiene peor encaje que él, mientras que si cede la iniciativa y busca boxear con fluidez, “Rougarou” debería poder usar su talento, capacidad de desborde y sus poco convencionales ángulos de golpeo para igualmente poner las bases para una victoria incuestionable.
Respaldo del evento
En cuanto al respaldo, el único combate que vale la pena es la eliminatoria WBA del peso superligero que disputarán dos invictos como el uzbeko Shakhram Giyasov 13(9KO)-0 y el estadounidense Harold Calderón 27(18KO)-0.
Aunque el oro mundial y plata olímpico Giyasov parte lógicamente como favorito para vencer, por primera vez se enfrentará a un boxeador con aspiraciones en el top 15, invicto, que prácticamente no ha perdido rounds hasta ahora y que está motivado por la que puede ser la última oportunidad de su carrera (Calderón ha tardado 10 años en alcanzar una pugna de gran importancia). De todos modos, si bien el recuerdo de los problemas que tuvo Giyasov ante Coria pueden hacer dudar a algunos sobre su proyección, el uzbeko es preciso, tiene capacidad de desborde y considerable velocidad y se mide a un boxeador con poquísima experiencia de calidad. Así, aunque podría ser un combate interesante y disputado, otra cosa que no sea una victoria de Giyasov resultaría sorprendente.
Por lo demás, habrá poco que ver en el cartel. La sobreprotegida Ramla Ali 8(2KO)-0 buscará seguir escalando en los rankings del peso supergallo enfrentándose a la mexicana Julissa Alejandra Guzmán 12(6KO)-2-2, que ha afrontado 11 de sus 16 combates ante púgiles con récord negativo; el peso ligero local Jeremy Hill 18(11KO)-3(1) intentará llevar a tres su racha de victorias peleando contra Mark Davis 19(5KO)-1(1), que sólo ha boxeado seis rounds desde que perdió ante Michael Fareñas en 2014; y la olímpica Ginny Fuchs 2(1KO)-0, que usó una de las más patéticas excusas que se recuerdan por un positivo en control antidopaje, peleará por primera vez a ocho rounds ante una Indeya Smith 6(1KO)-7-2 con récord engañoso.

One week after Sunny Edwards debuted with Matchroom Boxing, and three weeks after Jack Catterall also faced his first fight with that company, this Saturday will be the turn of WBC world super lightweight champion Regis “Rougarou” Prograis 28(24KO)-1 to start implementing his contract with Eddie Hearn. Prograis, considered by many to be the current number 1 in the division, will headline an evening from his hometown, specifically from the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, United States, facing Puerto Rican Danielito «El Zorro» Zorrilla 17(13KO)-1.
In this bout, Prograis is clear favorite to win, since his mix of power and unorthodox technique, his versatility, his strength and his resistance seem too important factors for a boxer well below the elite level like Zorrilla to achieve the upset. In fact, remembering his poor performance against Ruslan Madiyev, who displayed intense pressure, and his irregular but generally insufficient positive results against Arnold Barboza Jr.’s straight shots, it seems unlikely that Zorrilla will be able to neutralize the threat posed by Prograis, who comes from pummeling José «Chon» Zepeda.
In fact, if Prograis maintains a firm pressure, he can corner, wear down and hurt his challenger, who has a worse chin than him, while if he gives up the initiative and seeks to box, «Rougarou» should be able to use his talent, ability and his unconventional punching angles to also lay the foundations for an unquestionable victory.
Undercard
As for the support, the only fight that is worthwhile is the WBA super lightweight eliminator between two undefeated fighters like Uzbek Shakhram Giyasov 13(9KO)-0 and American Harold Calderón 27(18KO)-0.
Although the world gold medalist and Olympic silver medalist Giyasov logically is the betting favorite, for the first time he will face a boxer with aspirations in the top 15, undefeated, who has lost practically no rounds so far and who is motivated by what may be the last chance of his career (it took Calderón 10 years to reach a fight of great importance). In any case, although the problems that Giyasov had against Coria may make some doubt about his projection, the Uzbek is precise, has good instincts, considerable speed and he will fight a boxer with very little quality experience. So while it could be an interesting and contested fight, anything other than a Giyasov victory would be surprising.
For the rest, there will be little to highlight on the card. Overprotected Ramla Ali 8(2KO)-0 will seek to continue climbing in the super bantamweight rankings clashing against Mexican Julissa Alejandra Guzmán 12(6KO)-2-2, who has faced 11 of her 16 bouts against boxers with a negative record; local lightweight Jeremy Hill 18(11KO)-3(1) will attempt to take his winning streak to three fighting Mark Davis 19(5KO)-1(1), who has only boxed six rounds since losing to Michael Farenas in 2014; and Olympian Ginny Fuchs 2(1KO)-0, who has given one of the most pathetic excuses in memory for a positive doping control, will battle for the first time in an eight-rounder against a boxer with a misleading record as Indeya Smith 6(1KO)-7-2.
