Más allá de las palabras, en el boxeo, como en cualquier otro deporte, lo que importa más a la mayoría de organizadores y participantes son los resultados finales, que permiten que un púgil pueda alcanzar metas más altas, aspirar a más ingresos y fanfarronear de sus logros incluso cuando los ha obtenido ante rivales que han entretenido más o que merecían más el triunfo. Sin embargo, hay casos como el del invicto británico Lawrence Okolie 19(14KO)-0, campeón mundial WBO del peso crucero, que van más allá de lo que esta lógica puede llegar a justificar, ya que ha tenido demasiados combates que han sido absolutamente insufribles.
Esto no es una cuestión de si se prefiere un estilo boxístico más agresivo o más técnico, o si un púgil con una defensa demasiado buena hace que su dominio de las acciones sea tan apabullante y monótono que puede resultar tedioso. Okolie simplemente aprovecha que tiene un alcance y un tamaño descomunales para un peso crucero (se dice que pesa alrededor de 110 kg entre combates) para tirar golpes mal ejecutados y agarrarse, agarrarse y volver a agarrarse. De hecho, en ocasiones sus peleas han sido tan toscas, y con tantos forcejeos y golpes de un nivel pobre, que resulta increíble que haya sido un olímpico.
Hasta ahora Okolie, que jamás se ha medido a un boxeador de élite, ha podido vencer a su, por lo general, muy asequible oposición y vanagloriarse de sus éxitos, pero ha llegado a un punto en el que muchos aficionados se niegan en redondo a ver uno de sus combates y sus promotores tienen que hacer malabarismos para intentar vender sus peleas. Para Boxxer, la solución esta vez ha pasado por hacer que se enfrente al número 1 del ranking WBO, el ídolo de Bournemouth, Chris “The Gentleman” Billam-Smith 17(12KO)-1 en la ciudad de éste, en concreto en el Vitality Stadium.
Sin duda, dado que Billam-Smith ha ofrecido varias emocionantes pugnas, tiene muchos seguidores y estos estarán entusiasmados por presenciar su primera pelea mundialista y apoyarlo, además ante un rival nacional, posiblemente se consiga una buena venta de entradas en esta ocasión. Aun así, esto no garantizará ni mucho menos que Okolie esta vez vaya a intentar estar a la altura de encabezar una velada en un estadio con capacidad para más de 11.000 personas.
Junto a Michal Cieslak, Billam-Smith es el pegador de mayor nivel al que Okolie se ha enfrentado, y posiblemente es el boxeador más fuerte contra el que ha peleado. Además, el retador viene en una racha de ocho victorias desde su única y controvertida derrota ante Richard Riakporhe, que por cierto podría enfrentarse al ganador. Así, parece que Billam-Smith podría tener una opción de triunfo si logra encontrar la distancia correcta entre los largos golpes de Okolie y sus clinches y consigue aprovechar sus cualidades físicas a través de contundentes golpes de poder curvos, o si logra causar estragos luchando entre agarres.
Sin embargo, el hecho de que haya tenido dificultades ante rivales como Riakporhe, McCarthy o Chamberlain (y que no pudiese noquear a oponentes como Bregeon) sugiere que podría padecer dificultades ante Okolie si este último aprovecha su mayor eficacia combatiendo con espacios a través de fuertes directos y vuelve a lograr confundir a su oponente con clinches desde todas las distancias. Y es que en ese escenario a Billam-Smith sólo le quedará intentar tirar de tenacidad y de ambición ante su público para buscar un éxito que acabe con uno de los más espantosos reinados de la historia reciente.

Despite what they might say, in boxing, as in any other sport, what matters most to organizers and participants are the final results, as victories allow a fighter to reach higher goals, aspire to bigger purses and brag about his achievements even when he has obtained them against opponents who have entertained more or who are more deserving of the win. However, there are cases like that of the undefeated British Lawrence Okolie 19(14KO)-0, WBO cruiserweight champion, that go beyond what this logic can justify, since he has had too many fights that have been absolutely awful.
This is not a question of whether someone prefers a more aggressive or a more technical boxing style, or whether a fighter with a great defense uses his mastery to establish an overwhelming and monotonous dominance. Okolie simply takes advantage of the fact that he has enormous reach and size for a cruiserweight (he’s said to weigh about 240 pounds between bouts) to throw shots with poor punching technique and clinch, clinch and clinch again. In fact, at times his fights have been so messy, and with so much wrestling and low level puching, that it’s unbelievable that he was an Olympian.
Until now Okolie, who has never faced an elite boxer, has been able to beat his usually very easy opposition and brag about his successes, but the situation has reached a point where many fans refuse to watch one of their matches and his promoters have to put a lot of effort trying to sell their fights. For Boxxer, the solution this time has been to organize a defense against the number 1 fighter in the WBO ranking, Bournemouth’s idol Chris «The Gentleman» Billam-Smith 17(12KO)-1, in the latter’s city, specifically in the Vitality Stadium.
As Billam-Smith has delivered some exciting fights, he has a large following in his town and his fans will be excited to watch his first world title fight and support him, on top of it against a domestic opponent, possibly many tickets will be sold this time. Even so, this will by no means guarantee that Okolie will try to be up to the task of headlining an evening in a stadium with a capacity for more than 11,000 people.
Along with Michal Cieslak, Billam-Smith is the highest level puncher Okolie has ever faced, and possibly the strongest boxer he has ever fought. In addition, the challenger comes on an eight-win streak since his only and controversial loss to Richard Riakporhe, who could face the winner. Thus, it seems that Billam-Smith could have a chance of victory if he manages to find the right distance between Okolie’s long range shots and his clinches and manages to take advantage of his physical qualities through forceful power punches in hook, or if he manages to wear down his opponent fighting during clinches.
However, the fact that he struggled against the likes of Riakporhe, McCarthy or Chamberlain (and couldn’t KO boxers like Bregeon) suggests that he could struggle against Okolie if the latter takes advantage of his greater efficiency from long range through hard straight shots and manages to confuse his opponent with clinches from all distances. In that tactical scenario, Billam-Smith’s only chance will be resorting to his grit, tenacity and ambition in front of his fans to try to achieve a success that would end one of the worst reigns in recent history.
