Este era un combate en el que David “El Bandera Roja” Benavídez 27(23KO)-0 y Caleb “Sweet Hands” Plant 22(13KO)-2(1) pugnaban por muchas cosas: por tener una posición privilegiada en el entramado de PBC, por asentarse como una figura de PPV, por convertirse en retador obligatorio de Canelo, por zanjar su competencia favorablemente, para mostrar cómo de sólidos son en el nivel alto, etc. Pues bien, todas estas y otras cuestiones se resolvieron a favor de Benavídez, que lidió bien con los veloces primeros rounds de Plant y le fue llevando cada vez a aguas más profundas, le castigó duramente y se hizo con un merecido triunfo unánime. Las puntuaciones fueron lógicos 117-111 y 116-112 y un demasiado ajustado 115-113.
Durante los dos primeros asaltos todo fue según lo esperado, con Plant usando su jab y breves combinaciones para llegar con manos contra su contrincante mientras se desplazaba por el ring. Desde el tercer round “El Bandera Roja” ya comenzó a acelerar y a llegar con algunos ganchos zurdos y secos jabs, pero de momento Plant no perdió el orden y continuó desplazándose con agilidad, jabeando con astucia y escogiendo eventuales contras para seguir ofreciendo rounds disputados.
De todos modos, a partir de la mitad Plant empezó a padecer el efecto de tener que boxear con tanta rapidez constantemente y a quedar situado más cerca de las cuerdas en varios momentos, por lo que recibió amenazantes hooks, ante los cuales empezó a recurrir demasiado al clinch, en el que se desgastaba más por el mayor tamaño y peso de Benavídez. La pelea había empezado a cambiar de forma drástica y evidente, y la reacción del invicto continuó hasta que en el octavo round dañó a “Sweet Hands” con una derecha, aunque el árbitro Kenny Bayless hizo una incomprensible pausa (con la excusa de que a Plant le revisasen un corte en la ceja derecha) que dio tiempo al tocado púgil.
Pese a ello, Plant estaba cada vez más cansado y dañado, lo que le hizo entrar en una espiral negativa: cuantos más golpes de poder recibía, menos se movía, y cuanto menos se movía, más puños potentes recibía. Así, para el décimo asalto Plant estaba prácticamente roto y sólo las ganas de evitar la derrota ante su archirival le mantenían en pie bajo los potentes hooks de Benavídez. La tenacidad de Plant fue tal que le impidió, pese a ser sacudido por demoledores ganchos, visitar la lona, si bien su victoria a los puntos resultó inviable cuando se llegó a la última campana.
Según afirmó el padre de David Benavídez días atrás, tienen un contrato de tres peleas que les llevará a choques contra David Morrell, Jermall Charlo y Demetrius Andrade. Por otra parte, si se considerase que esta declaración podría no ser cierta, ahora Benavídez se ha asegurado la posición de aspirante obligatorio de Canelo con la captura del cinturón WBC interino. Por ello, y sumando a esto que el triunfo ante Plant en un evento en PPV ha llevado definitivamente su carrera a un nuevo nivel, está claro que Benavídez es ya demasiado importante como para perder el tiempo en pugnas ante rivales consecutivos como Dirrell, Angulo y Ellis y que está emplazado a disputar enormes combates en los próximos años.

This was a fight in which David “El Bandera Roja” Benavídez 27(23KO)-0 and Caleb “Sweet Hands” Plant 22(13KO)-2(1) were fighting for many things: to have a privileged position between PBC’s super middleweights, for establishing a new PPV star, for becoming Canelo’s mandatory challenger, for settling their rivalry favorably, for showing how solid they are at the high level, etc. Well, all these and other issues were resolved in favor of Benavídez, who dealt well with Plant’s fast first rounds and gradually took him into deeper waters, punished him hard and took a well-deserved unanimous victory. The scores were logical 117-111 and 116-112 and a too close 115-113.
For the first two rounds everything went as expected, with Plant using his jab and short combinations to hit his opponent as he moved around the ring. From the third round «El Bandera Roja» already began to step on the gas and connect some left hooks and sharp jabs, but for the moment Plant did not lose composure and continued to move with agility, cunningly jabbing and choosing eventual counters to continue offering disputed rounds.
In any case, halfway through Plant began to suffer from the effect of having to box so quickly constantly and was put closer to the ropes at various times, so he received threatening hooks, before which he began to resort too much to the clinch, in which he wore out more due to the greater size and weight of Benavídez. The fight had begun to change in a drastic and obvious way, and the undefeated’s reaction continued until in the eighth round he hurt «Sweet Hands» with a right punch, although referee Kenny Bayless made an incomprehensible pause (with the excuse of checking Plant’s cut on his right eyebrow) that gave time to the damaged boxer.
Despite this, Plant was increasingly tired and wore down, which caused him to enter a negative spiral: the more power punches he received, the less he moved, and the less he moved, the more powerful punches he received. Thus, by the tenth round, Plant was practically broken and only the desire to avoid defeat against his archrival kept him standing under Benavídez’s powerful hooks. Plant’s tenacity was such that he avoided touching the canvas despite being rocked by devastating hooks, although his victory on points was unfeasible when the bout reached the last bell.
David Benavídez’s father stated days ago that they have a three-fight contract that will lead them to clashes against David Morrell, Jermall Charlo and Demetrius Andrade. On the other hand, if one considers that this statement might not be true, Benavídez has now secured a position as Canelo‘s mandatory challenger with the capture of the WBC interim belt. For this reason, and adding to all this that the victory over Plant in a PPV event has definitely taken his career to a new level, it is clear that Benavídez is already too important to waste time fighting against consecutive opponents such as Dirrell, Angulo and Ellis and that he is set to face huge matchups in the coming years.
