Dalton Smith retuvo título británico en aburrido combate y Gary Cully destruyó a Flores en el respaldo del Wood-Lara

Sobre el papel, el titular británico Dalton “Thunder” Smith 14(10KO)-0 estaba a un nivel totalmente diferente al de su retador Billy Allington 10(0KO)-2-4, algo que sobre el ring se tradujo en un duelo de un solo lado. Con todo, pese a tener todas las ventajas posibles a su favor, Smith no mostró ambición ofensiva y ofreció un aburrido duelo de doce asaltos. El resultado fue una decisión unánime con puntuaciones de 120-107 y doble 119-108.
La pelea tuvo una bajísima actividad inicialmente, con Allington a penas tirando unos poquísimos jabs y Smith superándolo con sus muy escasos golpes de poder en uno-dos o gancho de mano adelantada. En ocasiones muy puntuales, el aspirante intentó arremeter, pero erró sus ataques por los pasos atrás de Smith y fue contragolpeado. Alcanzado el cuarto asalto “Thunder” dejó tocado a su rival con una mano diestra y le golpeó con series pero, aunque se estaba midiendo a un púgil con 0% de knockouts, Smith no aumentó sus riesgos en adelante buscando la detención.
Contrariamente, Smith se contentó con conectar eventuales ganchos zurdos o directos diestros haciendo valer su enorme ventaja en explosividad sin presionar intensamente a Allington, que hacía lo que podía (sin lograrlo) para intentar ser competitivo moviéndose y tirando algún jab. Por si la diferencia fuese poca, en el octavo asalto el campeón se anotó un knockdown con un par de ganchos de mano adelantada a la cabeza, pero tampoco esto le convenció para atacar más.
Así que, aunque volvió a estremecer a su oponente con algunos curvos y lo arrojó por los aires en una flagrante ilegalidad, Smith dejó llegar la pelea a la decisión de los jueces ante un rival que no tenía posibilidad alguna de derrotarle.
Cully volvió a brillar
El irlandés Gary Cully 16(10KO)-0 demostró una vez más su peligro como contendiente del peso ligero ante el estadounidense Wilfredo Flores 10(5KO)-1(1)-1, púgil imbatido al que controló completamente antes de un KOT en el segundo asalto.
Con sus entradas y salidas y sus larguísimos y veloces directos, el altísimo Cully dominó el primer asalto y cortó a Flores en el párpado derecho. Las cosas no fueron a mejor para el estadounidense, que en el segundo episodio fue derribado por un certero directo de izquierda y que posteriormente fue golpeado por series de golpes hasta que se produjo la detención arbitral a la vez que caía por segunda vez.

On paper, the British titleholder Dalton “Thunder” Smith 14(10KO)-0 was on a totally different level than his challenger Billy Allington 10(0KO)-2-4, something that in the ring resulted in a totally one-sided fight. Still, despite having every possible advantage in his favor, Smith showed no offensive ambition and delivered a boring twelve-rounder. The result was a unanimous decision (120-107, 119-108, 119-108).
The fight lacked a lot of activity initially, with Allington barely throwing a few jabs and Smith outpowering him with his very occasional punches on one-two or lead hook. On very specific moments, the challenger tried to attack, but he missed due to Smith’s steps back and was counterpunched. In the fourth round, «Thunder» hurt his opponent with a right hand and hit him with some combinations but, although he was facing a fighter with a 0% knockout ratio, Smith did not increase his aggressiveness from then on seeking the stoppage.
Instead, Smith limited himself to land some left hooks or right hands exploiting his enormous advantage in explosiveness without firmly pressuring Allington, who did his best to try to be competitive (and failed to achieve his objective) by moving and jabbing. If the difference between the boxers was not enough, in the eighth round the champion scored a knockdown with a couple of hooks to the head, but this did not convince him to attack more either.
So even though he rocked his opponent again with some hooks and uppercuts and tossed him into the air in a blatant illegality, Smith let the fight end in a decision against an opponent who had no chance of defeating him.
Cully shined again
Irish Gary Cully 16(10KO)-0 once again demonstrated his danger as a lightweight contender fighting the American Wilfredo Flores 10(5KO)-1(1)-1, an undefeated boxer he completely controlled before a second-round TKO.
Going in and out and throwing long and fast straight hands, the towering Cully dominated the first round and cut Flores’ right eyelid. Things did not improve for the American, who was knocked down in the second round by a straight left and who was later hit by a barrage of shots until the referee stopped the bout while he fell for the second time.
