Si Josh Warrington no hubiese tenido que dejar su cinturón mundial IBF del peso pluma un poco antes de enfrentarse por primera vez al mexicano Mauricio “Bronco” Lara 26(19KO)-2(1)-1, este último se habría coronado campeón mundial en dicho combate. Por ello, la impresión general era que el boxeo le debía un cinturón a Lara, que el sábado finalmente capturó su primer mundial batiendo al británico Leigh “Leigh-thal” Wood 26(16KO)-3(2) por KOT en el séptimo asalto.
Wood optó por mantenerse en el centro del ring e intentar llegar con sus rectos ante un Lara que inicialmente no se volcó al ataque, sino que se tomó las cosas con calma. Esto dio confianza a Wood, quien padeció un corte cerca del ojo izquierdo por choque de cabezas pero que intentó avanzar y atacar con sus golpes de poder. Evidentemente, esta táctica era una locura ante un púgil con la potencia y la eficacia en corta del mexicano, que en el segundo asalto dejó tocado a Wood con poderosos hooks a la cabeza.
Lara se equivocó al dar espacios y tiempo para recuperase a su rival en el tercer asalto, conectando Wood algunos buenos directos tanto en ese round como en el siguiente. “Bronco” necesitaba dejar de retroceder y aprovechar que tenía a su rival cerca para causar estragos usando sus hooks, pero siguió esperando demasiado la oportunidad para contragolpear, incluso después de haber estremecido a su contrincante con ganchos en el quinto round. Por ello, Wood de nuevo pudo tener un buen sexto asalto imponiendo sus directos y ganchos de mano adelantada.
La situación empezaba a ser absurda, dado que cada vez que Lara entraba en la distancia corta llegaba con muy peligrosas manos pero espaciaba demasiado esas ocasiones. En cualquier caso, incluso aunque escogió la táctica equivocada, al final Lara encontró la mano a la contra que buscaba en forma de un brutal gancho zurdo a la cabeza que tumbó aparatosamente a Wood en el séptimo asalto. “Leigh-Thal” se levantó pero estaba en muy mal estado y su esquina tiró la toalla para evitar que padeciese daños severos.
Tras el enfrentamiento Lara dejó claro que quiere enfrentarse por tercera vez a Josh Warrington para zanjar ese capítulo, si bien Eddie Hearn explicó que Leigh Wood tiene derecho a la revancha por una cláusula del contrato del duelo. Así que es de suponer que en la segunda mitad del año veremos a Lara viajar por cuarta vez a Reino Unido para un nuevo gran choque en el que intentará seguir expandiendo su prestigio y afianzando su excelente posición en la división.

If Josh Warrington hadn’t had to relinquish his IBF featherweight world belt shortly before facing Mexican Mauricio “Bronco” Lara 26(19KO)-2(1)-1 for the first time, the latter would have been crowned world champion in that fight. Therefore, many fans considered that boxing owed a belt to Lara, who on Saturday finally captured his first world title beating British Leigh «Leigh-thal» Wood 26(16KO)-3(2) by seventh-round TKO.
Wood chose to stay in the center of the ring and try to land his straight punches against Lara, who initially did not charge forward, but rather took things calmly. This gave Wood confidence and, although he suffered a cut near his left eye from a headbutt, tried to attack with his power shots. Obviously, this tactic was insane against a fighter with the power and efficiency at short range as the Mexican, who in the second round hurt him with his powerful hooks to the head.
Lara made a mistake giving space and time to recover to his opponent in the third round, so Wood connected some good right hands both in that round and in the next. “Bronco” needed to stop backing down and take advantage of having his opponent close to damage him using his hooks, but he kept waiting too long for the opportunity to counter, even after rocking his opponent with power punches in the fifth round. Therefore, Wood had a good sixth round imposing his straight hands and lead hooks.
The situation began to be absurd, since every time Lara reached the close distance he landed very dangerous hands, but he separated those occasions too much. In any case, even though he chose the wrong tactic, Lara ultimately found the counter he was looking for in the form of a brutal left hook to the head that dropped Wood on the canvas spectacularly in the seventh round. “Leigh-Thal” got up but was in very bad shape and his corner threw in the towel to prevent him from sustaining serious damage.
After the matchup, Lara made it clear that he wants to face Josh Warrington for the third time to end that chapter in his career, although Eddie Hearn explained that Leigh Wood has the right to have a rematch due to a clause in the contract. So it is to be assumed that in the second half of the year we will see Lara travel to the United Kingdom for the fourth time for a new big clash in which he will try to continue improving his prestige and consolidating his excellent position in the division.
