Después de que el exmonarca mundial puertorriqueño José “Sniper” Pedraza 29(14KO)-5(1)-1 lograse una racha de tres victorias en el peso superligero, cayese con controversia ante el excampeón unificado José Carlos Ramírez y empatase con el extitular Richard Commey, este sin duda suponía el mayor reto hasta la fecha para el imbatido estadounidense Arnold Barboza Jr. 28(10KO)-0. Con todo, aunque es verdad que Pedraza usó el plan de batalla equivocado y aun así ofreció un combate contendido, Barboza logró una merecida victoria por decisión unánime y justas tarjetas de 97-93, 96-93 y 96-94.
En el primer asalto Barboza, que decidió basar su estrategia en desplazarse por el ring, conectó buenos jabs y rectos de forma constante ante un Pedraza que intentó presionarle. El excampeón ajustó su timing en el segundo asalto y conectó sólidos puños, destacando algunos hooks al rostro, pero en adelante Barboza aumentó su cadencia de golpes y se anticipó más y volvió a imponer sus uno-dos, sus dos-uno, sus buenos jabs y sus contras con cruzados diestros, ganchos zurdos, etc.
Dado que Pedraza es hábil y tiene experiencia, de vez en cuando llegó con manos claras, pero el volumen de golpes del invicto era demasiado superior como para poder arrebatarle la gran mayoría de rounds. Por ello, lo más conveniente para Pedraza habría sido dejar de perseguir a su rival, boxeo en el que no es un especialista, y haber intentado combatir de manera más táctica e inteligente. Sin embargo, “Sniper” no renunció a su intento de presión y, más allá de ciertos directos de mano adelantada y eventuales combinaciones, continuó siendo superado por las series de rectos, los contragolpes y el constante, preciso y firme trabajo de Barboza.
De ese modo, el puertorriqueño siguió recibiendo afiladas manos y en el séptimo asalto incluso fue sacudido, aunque esto no le hizo abandonar su avance y en el octavo asalto alcanzó la distancia media y corta y conectó buenos curvos. Barboza, equivocadamente, decidió intercambiar estático durante los dos últimos rounds, por lo que recibió los certeros puños enlazados de Pedraza y terminó la pelea visiblemente desgastado.
Dado que en el caso de que el cinturón mundial WBO del peso superligero quede vacante, o se cree un título interino, Teófimo López y Liam Paro pelearán por él al estar clasificados como 1º y 2º, quizás una buena opción para Barboza sería enfrentarse al tercer clasificado José Carlos Ramírez, ante quien podría ofrecer un interesante enfrentamiento y tendría opciones de victoria. Y es que la regularidad de Barboza podría permitirle ponerse por delante en las tarjetas a pesar del riesgo que supondrían la agresividad y le pegada de un Ramírez más fuerte y resistente que él.

Considering that Puerto Rican former world champion José “Sniper” Pedraza 29(14KO)-5(1)-1 went on a three-fight win streak at super lightweight before being controversially defeated by former unified champion José Carlos Ramírez and fighting to a draw with former titleholder Richard Commey, this was undoubtedly the biggest challenge to date for the unbeaten American Arnold Barboza Jr. 28(10KO)-0. However, although it is true that Pedraza used the wrong battle plan and still offered a contested fight, Barboza achieved a well-deserved victory by unanimous decision and fair scores of 97-93, 96-93 and 96-94.
In the first round Barboza, who decided to base his strategy on moving around the ring, consistently connected good jabs and straight punches against Pedraza, who tried to pressure him. The former champion adjusted his timing in the second round and connected solid hands, highlighting some hooks to the face, but from then on Barboza increased his work rate and punched first more and once again imposed his one-twos and two-ones, his good jabs and his counters with right overhands, left hooks, etc.
As Pedraza is skilled and experienced, he occasionally connected clear hands, but generally the unbeaten’s punch output was too high for his opponent to win the rounds. Therefore, the most convenient thing for Pedraza would have been to stop pursuing his rival (style in which he is not a specialist) and try to fight in a more tactical and intelligent way. However, «Sniper» did not give up his attempt to pressure and, beyond certain hard jabs and eventual combinations, he continued to be surpassed by the combinations of straight shots, the counterattacks and the constant, precise and firm work of Barboza.
In this way, the Puerto Rican continued to receive sharp hands and in the seventh round he was even shaken, although this did not make him renounce to his advance, and in the eighth round he reached the medium and short distance and connected good hooks. Barboza mistakenly decided to trade punches static in the last two rounds, so he received skillful linked shots from Pedraza and finished the fight visibly worn down.
Given that in the event that the WBO world super lightweight belt becomes vacant, or an interim title is created, Teófimo López and Liam Paro will fight for it due to being ranked 1st and 2nd, perhaps a good option for Barboza would be to face the third-ranked boxer José Carlos Ramírez, against whom he could offer an interesting fight in which he would have a chance of victory: the regularity of Barboza’s work could allow him to get the lead on the scorecards despite the risk that the aggressiveness and the punch of a stronger and more resistant boxer like Ramírez would entail.
