No hubo sorpresa en el quinto combate profesional del plata olímpico estadounidense Richard Torrez Jr. 5(5KO)-0, que nuevamente impuso su precisión, agresividad y pegada para deshacerse de su oponente en el respaldo del Navarrete-Wilson. En esta ocasión, Torrez derrotó en el primer asalto a su compatriota James Bryant 6(4KO)-3(2).
Resultó evidente que Bryant, a diferencia de otros rivales de Torrez, no había entrado al ring sin importarle perder rápidamente, pero también quedó claro muy pronto que no iba a lograr su objetivo. Aunque el fuerte no favorito intentó moverse, usar el jab, cruzar golpes con su oponente en media-corta y forcejeó con él en clinches, el zurdo Torrez fue encontrando huecos para golpes de poder peligrosos antes de impactar la mano que pondría fin a las acciones: cuando Bryant intentó atacar, Torrez retrocedió a la vez que sacó un excelente uppercut de izquierda a la contra que sentó a su oponente.
Bryant se levantó en mal estado, y en las pruebas del árbitro para comprobar si estaba en condiciones de seguir, al boxeador incluso le fallaba una pierna, por lo que el combate debería haberse parado. Sin embargo, con el primer round terminado, el tercer hombre dejó que Bryant intentase recuperarse en el descanso, pero entonces de manera lógica se decidió que no iba a continuar.
Por lo poco que se ha podido ver en sus ocho rounds en el boxeo de pago, Torrez tiene potencial, pero la cuestión es que no podemos saber cuánto hasta que no le veamos en retos más exigentes que un enfrentamiento ante un Bryant que venía de ser derrotado en sólo dos rounds por Sonny Conto.

There was no surprise in the fifth professional fight of the American Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez Jr. 5(5KO)-0, who once again imposed his precision, aggressiveness and power to get rid of his opponent on Navarrete-Wilson’s support. This time, Torrez beat in the first round his compatriot James Bryant 6(4KO)-3(2).
It was clear that Bryant, unlike other Torrez’s opponents, hadn’t entered the ring without caring about losing quickly, but it also became obvious very quickly that he wasn’t going to achieve his goal. Although the underdog attempted to move, jab, exchange with his opponent at mid-short distance and use his strenght in clinches, the southpaw Torrez found openings for dangerous power shots before landing the hand that would end the bout: when Bryant tried to attack, Torrez stepped back while unleashing an excellent counter left uppercut that sat his opponent on the canvas.
Bryant got up with difficulties, and in the referee’s tests to see if he was in condition to continue the boxer staggered due to problems in one of his legs, so the fight should have been stopped. But with the first round over, the referee let Bryant try to recover at the break. However, then it was logically decided that he was not going to continue.
From his eight rounds in paid boxing, it can be assumed that Torrez has potential, but the point is that we cannot know how much until we see him in more demanding challenges than a fight against Bryant, who was coming from a second round defeat against Sonny Conto.
