Confirmado oficialmente Joe Joyce vs. Zhilei Zhang. Declaraciones de los púgiles

Este jueves, la compañía Queensberry Promotions, dirigida por Frank Warren, ha confirmado oficialmente que el día 15 de abril, en el Copper Box Arena de Londres, Reino Unido, el invicto peso pesado británico Joe “Juggernaut” Joyce 15(14KO)-0 y el duro púgil chino Zhilei “Big Bang” Zhang 24(19KO)-1-1 se enfrentarán en el que se presenta como un muy interesante y potencialmente entretenido combate.
En juego estará el título interino WBO del peso pesado que posee Joyce, por lo que el ganador será uno de los aspirantes obligatorios del ganador del Usyk-Fury. Además, si el cinturón WBO fuese dejado vacante en algún momento, el poseedor de la corona interina se convertiría automáticamente en monarca mundial del peso pesado de pleno derecho.
Aunque habitualmente Joyce no se muestra demasiado emocionado por sus retos, sí pareció estarlo para este combate ante el gigante Zhang:
“Es un gran combate. Tuvo una dura pelea contra Hrgović, pero pensé que ganó ese combate. Zhang es un zurdo grande y fuerte que es enorme, y ha estado en los Juegos Olímpicos y todo eso. Así que tiene la experiencia y pienso que será un gran combate. Tiene pegada así que tendré que estar atento. Como Hrgović y yo tenemos un estilo similar, y ellos tuvieron un gran combate, cuando nosotros nos enfrentemos debería ser entretenido”.
Joyce continuó:
“¡Habrá una carnicería en el centro del ring! He perdido los estribos unas pocas veces en sparring, y una vez fue contra un zurdo que iba hacia adelante que estaba intentando noquearme. Fue un sparring emocionante. Pienso que conmigo y Zhang habrán muchos duros puños intercambiados y estoy seguro de que será una buena pelea. Será una buena preparación para Usyk o Fury, además no peleo contra un zurdo desde que gané el título de la Commonwealth contra Lenroy Thomas”.
Por su parte, Zhang afirmó:
“Es un nuevo capítulo en mi carrera. Siempre estoy listo para los retos y para cuando la oportunidad llama a la puerta. Joe Joyce y yo tenemos mucho en común: los dos somos platas olímpicos, los dos somos grandes pegadores y tenemos casi el mismo tamaño. Esta va a ser una pelea explosiva, épica y tremenda. Today, Queensberry Promotions, promotional company directed by Frank Warren, has officially confirmed that on April 15, at the Copper Box Arena in London, United Kingdom, the undefeated British heavyweight Joe «Juggernaut» Joyce 15(14KO)-0 and the tough Chinese fighter Zhilei “Big Bang” Zhang 24(19KO)-1-1 will square off in a very interesting bout that has the potential to be very entertaining.
At stake will be Joyce’s WBO interim heavyweight title, so the winner will be one of the mandatory challengers for the winner of the Usyk-Fury fight. On the other hand, if the WBO belt were vacated in any circumstance, the interim titleholder would automatically become full heavyweight champion.
Although Joyce usually doesn’t look too excited about his challenges, he did seem to be eager to face this fight against the giant Zhang:
“It is a great fight. He had a tough fight against Hrgovic but I thought he won the fight. Zhang is a big, strong southpaw who is massive, and he has been to the Olympics and all that. So, he has the experience and I think it will be a great fight. He bangs so I will have to watch out for it. As Hrgovic and I have a similar style, they had a great fight, so when we fight it should be entertaining.
Joyce added:
“It will be carnage in the centre of the ring! I have lost my temper a few times in sparring and once was against a come-forward southpaw who was trying to knock me out. It was an exciting spar. I think with me and Zhang there will be real heavy punches exchanged and I am sure it will be a good fight. It will be a good preparation for Usyk or Fury, plus I haven’t fought a southpaw since I won the Commonwealth title against Lenroy Thomas.”
For his part, Zhang said:
“It’s a new chapter in my career. I am always up for the challenge and when the opportunity rings the bell. Joe Joyce and I share a lot in common – we both are Olympic silver medalists, both are big punchers, and are nearly the same size. This is going to be an explosive, epic and tremendous fight. I want to thank my team and Joyce’s team for putting this together. I want all my fans in UK to show up and enjoy the event. Can’t wait to get in the ring on April 15th.”
