Etoundi Michel

The Ivorian Etoundi “Camarones” Michel scored his biggest victory to date beating tepid “Chino” García in Mexico

Last night, in the main event of the Zanfer Boxing evening, the Mexican super welterweight puncher Jorge «Chino» García 24(20KO)-4 intended to bring his string of victories to seven and aim for bigger goals. However, the undefeated Ivorian Etoundi “Camarones” Michel 12(9KO)-0, trained by Nacho Beristáin, was the boxer who left the ring with his arm raised. Michel won by deserved split decision, this being the third victory he has achieved in Mexican soil. The scores were 93-97, 95-96 and a 96-95.

Garcia is a puncher who usually fights very aggressively, but this time he was not recognizable, since he had a complete lack of offensive activity and he hesitated a lot. This meant, for example, that during the first two rounds García barely attacked, and what is even worse, he even gave up the initiative to his opponent. Thus, Michel, who has a long reach and good hand speed, was able to calmly impose his jab along with some right hands and left hooks to win the rounds in a tactical and low-paced fight.

Seeing that he was facing no more opposition than he would have in a medium-intensity sparring session, Michel even threw some combinations of hooks at short range that were not answered forcefully. Finally, in the fifth round, «Chino» landed some hooks and uppercuts in exchanges, but his opponent knew how to react, and he answered with a few combinations that made his opponent step back in the sixth round. So fans had to wait for the seventh to see again the Mexican connect hard hooks at close distance.

However, although Garcia had some sporadic success, thereafter he pinned himself on the ropes and allowed the Ivorian to work, so overall Michel imposed his jab going forward or backwards, made his opponent miss with his movements and hit him with clear straight hands to win the rounds and achieve an important victory for his career but that was essentially possible by Chino’s attitude.

In other words, Michel did what he had to do, taking advantage of the lack of aggressiveness of his opponent to exploit his technical superiority and win. However, despite Michel has virtues, if García had fought fiercely, the result would surely have been different. Michel’s punch output was not too high and when García offered tenacity in his offensives he outpowered him, something that became clear in a tenth round in which the local connected dangerous hands when he, too late, attacked with intensity.

For this reason, although Michel is a boxer in great shape and motivated who will face soon a new step forward, he will depend a lot on the matchmaking to maintain his undefeated record in his next challenges.
