Casino Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

«Titán» Carrasco conquered the South American lightweight belt with a KO and a good performance against Agustín Quintana

Casino Buenos Aires, Buenos Aires, Argentina. South American lightweight championship. Quintana’s second defense.

Coming both on a ten-fight win streak, the South American championship between the titleholder Agustín Quintana 18(13KO)-2(1)-1 and the challenger Juan Javier «Titán» Carrasco 16(9KO)-1(1) seemed a well matched clash and a great opportunity for both of them to try to push themselves to new heights. The decisive victory was obtained by Carrasco, who dropped Quintana twice to score a fifth-round knockout.

Carrasco wanted to achieve a convincing victory, so he advanced firmly and unleashed good combinations of left hook and straight right hand, one-two-hooks and overhands and uppercuts against Quintana, who was driven to a defensive stance. However, although he tried to block and land dissuasive counterpunches he failed to slow down Carrasco, who remained solid landing power shots from mid-range with increasing danger.

So much so that, in the third round, a straight right hand knocked down Quintana. Without taking much risks, Carrasco sought to exploit his success with new combinations with his opponent against the ropes, but Quintana weathered the storm by walking, throwing straight hands and blocking. What’s more, by the fourth round Quintana had recovered enough to withstand the pressure without backing down and look to land sharp counterpunches with lead hooks and right hands.

Even so, and although in the fifth round he both attacked and moved around the ring, Quintana was dropped again by a straight right and a left hook. The boxer shook his head, grabbed his mouthpiece and threw it to the canvas in frustration while the referee completed the count.

As always happens in crucial fights between boxers with good streaks that end with an unquestionable result, while Quintana suffered a significant setback to his aspirations, Carrasco made quite a statement and will face the 2023 season full of confidence. In it he may look for another crucial victory in the domestic level before trying to reach the world rankings, seeming that in his country he could have interesting duels against Claudio Daneff and Fabricio Bea or that he could even try to get even with Miguel Germán Acosta, the only fighter who has defeated him.
