La uruguaya Maira Moneo 12(2KO)-1 se estaba perfilando como una interesante contendiente en el peso ligero femenino, si bien le faltaba una victoria insigne con la que intentar demostrar que realmente posee el nivel necesario para combatir en la cumbre. Esta la obtuvo el penúltimo día del año ante la extop 10 libra por libra argentina Erica Farías 27(10KO)-7, a quien derrotó de forma mucho más clara que Jessica McCaskill. El veredicto fue una decisión unánime con cartulinas demasiado ajustadas de triple 96-94.
Moneo era consciente de que esta era la mayor oportunidad de su carrera hasta la fecha y salió al ring dispuesta a aprovecharla, avanzando con agresividad y sacando furiosas combinaciones de golpes de poder ante una Farías que se desplazó, clincheó y ofreció contragolpes con mucha voluntad. Ciertamente, la pelea dejó algunos tremendos intercambios, como en el tercer round, pero desafortunadamente se vio entrecortada por un sinfín de agarres por parte de Farías que el árbitro no supo o no quiso atajar debidamente.
En cualquier caso, Moneo, aunque fue un tanto tosca en sus ataques, entró con la cabeza por delante y muchas veces se precipitó en sus arremetidas, tuvo una determinación y una agresividad encomiables, insistiendo vez tras vez en sus cargas ante una Farías que se centró demasiado en el clinch en lugar de dar más continuidad a su jab y a sus astutas contras.
Sin duda, “La Pantera” habría tenido mejores opciones con otro tipo de planteamiento, ya que en un espectacular cruce de golpes en el sexto asalto incluso pareció estremecer con un curvo a la visitante. De todos modos, Farías, que tuvo que lidiar con una seria inflamación en la frente desde el principio de la pugna por un choque de cabezas, siguió lanzando insuficientemente sus manos y recibiendo los ganchos y los uppercuts desesperados de una Moneo que incluso continuaba golpeando cuando era agarrada por su rival.
La acometividad de Moneo alcanzó quizás su pico en el octavo asalto, en el que impactó excelentes manos consecutivas contra el rostro de la local. Los ataques de la uruguaya no volvieron a llegar a tal punto de nuevo, pero mantuvo un elevado número de ataques para asegurarse un triunfo que resultó realmente meritorio por el esfuerzo físico realizado.
Evidentemente, Farías no está ya ni siquiera cerca de su mejor versión, que quedó atrás hace bastantes años, y su planteamiento estratégico no fue ni mucho menos el adecuado. Con todo, en los últimos años boxeadoras bien valoradas no pudieron abrumarla a base de agresividad a diferencia de Moneo, lo que demuestra que esta última no es una púgil que deba ser menospreciada. Aun así, con sólo 12 victorias profesionales parece tener un recorrido insuficientemente extenso como para estar preparada de forma adecuada para retar a Katie Taylor, campeona indiscutida del peso ligero de la que ahora es aspirante obligatoria.

The Uruguayan Maira Moneo 12(2KO)-1 was emerging as an interesting contender in the women’s lightweight division, although she lacked a notable victory with which to try to demonstrate that she really has the necessary level to fight at the top. That decisive victory she obtained it on the penultimate day of the year against former top 10 pound-per-pound fighter Erica Farías 27(10KO)-7, whom she defeated much more clearly than Jessica McCaskill. The verdict was a unanimous decision with too close scorecards of triple 96-94.
Moneo was aware that this was the biggest opportunity of her career to date and she stepped into the ring ready to take advantage of it, advancing aggressively and unleashing furious combinations of power shots against Farias, who moved, clinched and countered with a lot of will. Certainly, the fight had some tremendous exchanges, for example in the third round, but unfortunately it was interrupted by constant clinches from Farías that the referee did not know or did not want to properly stop.
In any case, Moneo, although she was somewhat crude in her offensives, advanced headfirst and at many times rushed in her attacks, she had a commendable determination and aggressiveness, insisting time after time on her charges against Farias, who was too focused on holding instead of giving more continuity to her jab and her clever counters.
Undoubtedly, «La Pantera» would have had better chances of success with another type of approach, since in a spectacular exchange in the sixth round she even rocked the visitor with a hook. Still, Farías, who had to deal with a serious forehead swelling since early in the match due to a headbutt, did not increase her number of punches and received desperate hooks and uppecuts from Moneo, who kept punching even when her opponent clinched.
Moneo’s aggressiveness perhaps reached her peak in the eighth round, in which she landed excellent consecutive power shots against the local’s face. The Uruguayan’s attacks did not achieve that much success again, but she maintained a remarkable work to ensure the victory, which was truly meritorious, especially considering the physical effort she made.
Obviously, Farías is no longer even close to her best version, who was left behind many years ago, and her strategic choice was far from adequate. However, in recent years well-regarded boxers have not been able to overwhelm her with aggressiveness like Moneo, which shows that the latter is not a fighter to be underestimated. Even so, with only 12 professional victories she doesn’t have a sufficiently long a career to be adequately prepared to challenge Katie Taylor, undisputed lightweight champion for whom she is now mandatory challenger.
