Vladimir Shishkin derrotó por decisión al excampeón mundial José Uzcátegui en eliminatoria del peso supermedio

Ciertamente no ofreció una actuación que pusiese en alerta a la élite de la división, y las brechas que había mostrado anteriormente se volvieron a ver, pero el ruso Vladimir Shishkin 14(8KO)-0 venció su eliminatoria ante el extitular mundial venezolano José “Bolivita” Uzcátegui 32(27KO)-5, logró situarse cerca de un campeonato y se emplazó a nuevas importantes oportunidades. La victoria de Shishkin llegó por decisión unánime y cartulinas de justo doble 117-111 y un absurdo 115-113.
Sabiendo que su única opción era acortar los espacios e intentar imponer su pegada, Uzcátegui avanzó sobre su contrincante, aunque se encontró con los afilados rectos de un Shishkin que acompañó sus golpes conectados con desplazamientos simples que le bastaron para neutralizar la presión. Con el paso de los minutos, en ocasiones el venezolano llegó con alguna derecha recta o alcanzó la distancia corta y media-corta pero, si bien este no era el escenario que más convenía a Shishkin y se produjeron algunos insistentes clinches, el ruso se mostró más eficaz que otras veces en estas situaciones y conectó algún buen curvo con reducidos espacios.
Por lo demás, aunque los agarres deslucieron un tanto el choque, Shishkin siguió impactando directos aislados, uno-dos, secos jabs y derechas a la contra tras esquivas para golpear y frustrar a un Uzcátegui que hacia la mitad de la pugna ya estaba críticamente por detrás en las tarjetas.
Hacia el último cuarto Shishkin perdió eficacia y pareció relajarse (o quizás incluso dar por garantizada su superioridad), algo que le sirvió a Uzcátegui para llegar con derechas aisladas y trabajar en corta con cierta continuidad, conectando algún duro hook. Pero su amago de reacción tuvo más voluntad que peligro, faltándole a muchos de sus golpes correcta ejecución, así que no dañó o agobió seriamente a Shishkin y en los últimos asaltos éste volvió a usar sus directos para crear problemas a su limitado contrincante.
Habiéndose podido ver recientemente mucho más convincentes actuaciones de boxeadores como David Morrell, Osleys Iglesias, Padraig McCrory o Christian Mbilli, es difícil considerar que Shishkin tiene la potencia, versatilidad o profundidad técnica necesarias para poder lidiar con las mayores figuras en ascenso de la categoría, por no hablar ya de la élite consolidada del peso supermedio.
Comparativamente con anteriores actuaciones, Shishkin parece estar mejorando y siguiendo un cierto proceso de evolución, así que sería injusto considerar que la versión que vimos de él el sábado es la definitiva. Con todo, dado que hay boxeadores en ascenso que con casi la mitad de peleas profesionales que él han brillado el doble, da la sensación de que tendrá complicado aspirar al triunfo ante un cierto grupo de potenciales oponentes en una división contendida y que además está estancada por tener un campeón indiscutido como Canelo Álvarez.

He did not offer a performance that could put the division’s elite on notice, and the flaws he had previously shown were visible again, but Russian Vladimir Shishkin 14(8KO)-0 won his eliminator against Venezuelan former world champion José «Bolivita» Uzcátegui 32(27KO)-5, got closer to a championship fight and opened the door for new important opportunities. Shishkin’s victory came by unanimous decision and scorecards of fair double 117-111 and an absurd 115-113.
Knowing that his only option was to shorten the spaces and try to impose his punch, Uzcátegui advanced on his opponent, although he was answered by the sharp straight shots of Shishkin, who accompanied his connected blows with simple movements that were enough to neutralize the pressure. As the minutes went by, the Venezuelan sometimes landed a straight right hand or reached the short and medium-short distance. However, although this was not the tactical scenario that best suited Shishkin and there were many clinches, the Russian showed more effectiveness than in other times in these kind of situations and landed some good hooks or uppercuts without much space.
For the rest, although the repeated holding made the clash lose excitement, Shishkin continued to land isolated straight punches, one-twos, sharp jabs and counter right hands after dodges to hit and frustrate Uzcátegui, who was already in a critical position in the scorecards halfway through the fight.
Towards the last quarter, Shishkin lost efficiency and seemed to relax (or perhaps he even took his superiority for granted), something that helped Uzcátegui to connect isolated right overhands and work at short distance with some continuity, landing a few hard hooks. But his attempted rally had much more will than danger and many of his blows lacked the correct punching technique, so he did not seriously hurt or overwhelm his opponent and in the last rounds Shishkin used his straight hands again to create problems for the limited Uzcátegui.
Taking into account that there has been recently much more convincing performances from boxers like David Morrell, Osleys Iglesias, Padraig McCrory or Christian Mbilli, it is difficult to consider that Shishkin has the power, versatility or technical depth necessary to be able to deal with the rising stars of the division, not to mention the established super middleweight elite.
Compared to some of his previous performances, Shishkin seems to be improving, so it would be unfair to consider that his Saturday’s version is the definitive one. All in all, given that there are promising boxers who, with almost half the professional fights he has, have shone twice as brightly, it seems that it will be difficult for him to aspire to victory against a certain group of potential opponents in a contested division that is stalled due to having an undisputed champion as Canelo Álvarez.
