Vincent Astrolabio encadenó triunfo sobre Rigondeaux con KO ante Potapov y disputará mundial cuando Inoue suba de división

En unas semanas o meses el monarca indiscutido del peso gallo Naoya Inoue abandonará sus cuatro cinturones mundiales y ascenderá al peso supergallo buscando unificar totalmente esa división también. Esto creará un vacío de poder en el peso gallo que dará la oportunidad de acceder a peleas mundialistas a ocho púgiles, siendo uno de ellos el filipino Vincent Astrolabio 18(13KO)-3(1), que en la noche del sábado noqueó en el sexto round al ruso Nikolay Potapov 23(11KO)-3(2)-1 en una eliminatoria IBF.
En el primer asalto Astrolabio envió dos veces a su rival a la lona, una vez sin cuenta y otra con: en una de las ocasiones impactó una derecha recta a la nuca cuando Potapov estaba agachado y en la otra lanzó un gancho zurdo que golpeó de refilón a su oponente, que estaba mal colocado de piernas. Sin embargo, más allá de estos hechos y de que era innegable que el filipino tenía explosividad, en los primeros asaltos Potapov hizo valer su precisión y su orden para aprovechar los huecos defensivos, la inferioridad táctica y las precipitadas embestidas de su oponente y conectar precisos directos y ganchos zurdos a la contra y lanzar uno-dos con cierta frecuencia.
Con el paso de los minutos la cadencia de golpes del ruso decayó y su desventaja en potencia se agrandó, por lo que los ataques de Astrolabio, pese a ser un tanto toscos, se hicieron cada vez más peligrosos y Potapov cada vez tuvo más difícil contener a su contrincante. Así, en el quinto round un uppercut diestro dañó a Potapov, que se dio la vuelta y tuvo que poner la rodilla en la lona. Este fue el principio del fin, dado que en el sexto episodio una combinación de hooks al torso hizo que el ruso retrocediese y de nuevo se arrodillase en el tapiz, no pudiendo evitar esta vez la detención de la contienda.
No podemos saber qué efecto tuvo el golpe en la nuca del primer round, y es verdad también que la carrera de Potapov podría haber sido otra si se le hubiese dado la victoria en los controvertidos veredictos ante Joshua Greer y Stephon Young, pero el combate mostró nuevamente las limitaciones de Potapov en el nivel alto. Y es que cuenta con ortodoxa habilidad y cierta astucia, pero su resistencia al castigo no es buena y le falta mucha contundencia, algo que no sólo quedó de manifiesto en este combate sino también en su derrota ante un veterano y cerca del retiro Omar Narváez.
Por su parte, Astrolabio una vez más logró decantar de su lado una pugna con su potencia, cosa que continuará dándole moral y confianza en su pegada. Con todo, sus brechas tácticas son evidentes y en el caso de que tenga que pelear por el vacante cinto IBF ante Emmanuel Rodríguez, el puertorriqueño perfectamente podría hacer valer su gran destreza, talento y precisión para lograr coronarse.

In a few weeks or months, the undisputed bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue will relinquish his four world belts and move up to super bantamweight looking to fully unify another division. This will create a power vacuum at bantamweight that will give eight fighters the opportunity to fight in world title bouts, one of them being the Filipino Vincent Astrolabio 18(13KO)-3(1), who on Saturday night knocked out in the sixth round the Russian Nikolay Potapov 23(11KO)-3(2)-1 in an IBF eliminator.
In the first round Astrolabio sent his rival to the canvas twice, once without a count by the referee: in one of the occasions he landed a straight right to the back of the head when Potapov was crouching and in the other the Filipino slightly hit his opponent with a left hook while he had his legs bad positioned. However, letting aside the knockdown and the undeniable proves of Astolabio’s explosiveness, in the first stretch Potapov used his precision and his order to take advantage of the defensive flaws, the tactical inferiority and the hasty attacks of his opponent, connect precise counterpunches in straight right and left hook and throw frequent one-twos.
However, as the minutes passed, the Russian’s punch rate dropped and his disadvantage in power increased, so Astrolabio’s attacks, despite being somewhat crude, became more dangerous and Potapov had more problems trying to contain his opponent. Thus, in the fifth round a right uppercut linked with a left hook hurt Potapov, who turned around and had to kneel on the canvas. This was the beginning of the end, since in the sixth round a combination of hooks to the Russian’s body made him kneel on the mat again, this time without being able to avoid the stoppage.
We certainly can’t know to what extent he was affected by the punch at the back of the head in the first round, and it’s also true that Potapov’s career could have been different had he been given a favorable verdict in his controversial bouts against Joshua Greer and Stephon Young, but the fight showed again his limitations at the high level. He has orthodox skill and a certain cunning, but his punch resistance is not good and he lacks a lot of forcefulness, something that was not only evident in this bout but also in his defeat against a veteran boxer, then close to retirement, as Omar Narváez.
For his part, Astrolabio once again managed to win a match with his power, which will continue to give him morale and will increase the confidence on his punch. However, his tactical limitations are manifest and, in the event that he has to fight for the vacant IBF belt against Emmanuel Rodríguez, the Puerto Rican could perfectly use his great ability, talent and precision to be crowned champion.
