No han transcurrido todavía ni diez meses desde su dura derrota ante Leigh Wood, pero el bronce olímpico Michael Conlan 18(9KO)-1(1) no sólo ha recuperado ya la moral, sino que incluso apunta ahora a un campeonato mundial en la primera mitad de 2023. Y es que el mismo día en que su compañero de escuadra Luis Alberto López destronó a Josh Warrington como monarca IBF del peso pluma, Conlan se deshizo en sólo un round de Karim Guerfi 31(9KO)-7(5).
Más allá de algún astuto gancho zurdo al rostro a la contra por parte de Guerfi, Conlan atacó con precisión y velocidad con directos y ganchos al cuerpo acompañando sus golpes con grandes esquivas. Tras un par de minutos, Conlan ya había acumulado notable castigo en el torso de Guerfi, que al recibir un directo al cuerpo más quedó dañado en las cuerdas y recibió una andanada que le llevó al tapiz. El visitante se levantó en mal estado y el árbitro paró el choque.
El plan de Top Rank es que “El Venado” López exponga su cinturón ante Michael Conlan, duelo que tiene mucho sentido desde varios puntos de vista. En él López podrá intentar demostrar que puede mantenerse al nivel de la cumbre de forma consistente ante un púgil con mucha más habilidad que Warrington, y Conlan tendrá la oportunidad de mostrar que es capaz de lidiar con la potencia de un pegador en una pugna larga y salir airoso con su destreza. Todo ello además sin poder pasarse por alto que, si se elige la sede adecuada, el combate podría vender una muy importante cantidad de entradas.
En cuanto al respaldo del Conlan-Guerfi, el choque Liam Taylor vs. Tyronne McKenna no se disputó, mientras que el peso superligero Sean McComb 15(5KO)-1(1) logró una amplísima victoria por decisión unánime (triple 100-90) ante el invicto eslovaco Zsolt Osadan 23(15KO)-1-1, por lo que ya encadena cuatro triunfos desde su tropiezo ante Gavin Gwynne y ahora podría aparecer en el ranking WBO en virtud de la captura de un cinto menor.

Not even ten months have passed since his hard defeat against Leigh Wood, but the Olympic bronze medalist Michael Conlan 18(9KO)-1(1) has recovered his morale and is now even aiming for a world title fight in the first half of 2023. In the same day that his squadmate Luis Alberto López dethroned Josh Warrington as IBF featherweight monarch, Conlan got rid of Karim Guerfi 31(9KO)-7(5) in just one round.
Letting aside some clever counter left hooks to the face from Guerfi, Conlan attacked with precision and speed with straight hands and hooks to the body, accompanying his punches with great dodges. After a couple of minutes, Conlan had already accumulated notable punishment on Guerfi’s torso, so the visitor was hurt by another straight hand to the body and received on the ropes a fast barrage of shots that took him to the mat. Guerfi got up in no condition to continue and the referee stopped the match.
Top Rank’s plan is for «El Venado» López to defend his belt against Michael Conlan, a duel that makes a lot of sense from many points of view. In it López could try to show that he can consistently perform at the level of the top against a fighter with much more skill than Warrington, and Conlan will have the opportunity to show that he is capable of dealing with the power of a puncher in a long fight and succeed using his skill. Also, it must be taken into account that, if the right venue is chosen, the fight could sell a very significant number of tickets.
As for Conlan-Guerfi’s support, the Liam Taylor vs. Tyronne McKenna bout was canceled, while super lightweight Sean McComb 15(5KO)-1(1) scored a lopsided unanimous decision victory (triple 100-90) against undefeated Slovakian Zsolt Osadan 23(15KO)-1-1. McComb has stringed four wins since his loss against Gavin Gwynne, and now he could appear in the WBO ranking thanks to a minor belt he captured in the fight.
