Aunque era claro favorito para imponerse en el combate, quizás lo más interesante del duelo entre el prometedor cubano Osleys Iglesias 8(7KO)-0 y el ucraniano Andrii Velikovskyi 21(14KO)-3(2)-2 era ver con qué grado de solvencia y contundencia lograba el primero la victoria en este primer test ante un púgil joven y con aspiraciones internacionales. Pues bien, Iglesias volvió a ofrecer una gran actuación, dominando el choque y mermando a su oponente hasta el KOT en el décimo round.
En el primer cuarto Velikovskiy dejó trabajar demasiado al zurdo Iglesias, que con su excelente velocidad de manos, su habilidad y una notable cadencia de golpes alcanzó a su oponente con directos zurdos, ganchos diestros, cruzados, combinaciones de uppercut-directo y con muchos otros puños enlazados. Es cierto que el ucraniano en ciertos momentos realizó alguna buena esquiva, pero en general darle tanto margen a su rival para atacar era algo muy peligroso ante un boxeador con los recursos técnicos del cubano.
Posteriormente, Velikovskiy intentó presionar y atacar más, decisión táctica más acertada. Y es que, aunque Iglesias utilizó igualmente su precisión, rapidez y destreza para conectar nítidos y potentes contragolpes, así al menos el ucraniano llegaba de vez en cuando con algún puño en jab, directo diestro o gancho abajo y no le ponía las cosas tan fáciles al favorito.
En cualquier caso, Iglesias está a otro nivel y en todo escenario boxístico era superior a su contrincante, ya que tanto lanzando ofensivas como desplazándose ganaba los rounds de manera clarísima y acumulaba castigo en Velikovskiy, que lidió con los golpes sólo gracias a su valentía y tesón. De todos modos, en el octavo asalto Velikovskiy tenía una horrible inflamación en su ceja izquierda (había padecido un corte por choque de cabezas en esa zona en el cuarto asalto) y era necesario parar el duelo. Más aún habiendo perdido el visitante todos los asaltos y estando ya visiblemente cansado y, por lo tanto, sin ni siquiera la remota posibilidad de un decisivo lucky punch.
Con todo, en un ejemplo de terrible negligencia, la pugna siguió hasta el décimo round, cuando el árbitro, tras una tensa combinación de hooks de Iglesias, decidió detener el choque, algo que debería haber hecho la esquina de Velikovksiy muchísimo antes.
Iglesias recuerda bastante a otro prometedor peso supermedio cubano como David Morrell, puesto que ambos son dos zurdos, hábiles púgiles con gran alcance, mucha variedad de recursos, buena frecuencia de puños y precisión, entre otras muchas cualidades. De hecho, ambos comparten el mismo récord exacto, estando ambos invictos en ocho combates, siete de ellos ganados antes del límite. Así que resulta inevitable preguntarse hasta dónde llegarán las carreras de ambos y cómo sería un duelo entre los dos.
En cualquier caso, más allá de esto y centrándonos en el caso de Iglesias, éste es de momento 12º WBA y parece preparado para afrontar serios tests ante púgiles clasificados en 2023, aunque quizás su equipo prefiera expandir su bagaje profesional con algunas pugnas más contra púgiles cercanos a las listas antes de llevarle a peleas decisivas.

Although he was clear favorite to prevail in the fight, perhaps the most interesting thing about the duel between the promising Cuban Osleys Iglesias 8(7KO)-0 and the Ukrainian Andrii Velikovskyi 21(14KO)-3(2)-2 was to see how much superiority and forcefulness the former showed in his first test against a young boxer with international aspirations. Well, Iglesias again offered a great performance, dominating the bout and punishing his opponent until winning by TKO in the tenth round.
In the first quarter, Velikovskiy let the southpaw Iglesias work too much. So the Cuban used his excellent hand speed, his skill and a remarkable work rate to hit his opponent with straight lefts, right hooks, right uppercut-straight left combinations and with many other linked hands. It is true that the Ukrainian at certain times made some good dodges, but in general allowing his opponent to take the initiative and attack was a very dangerous decision against a boxer with so many technical resources as Iglesias.
Later, Velikovskiy made a wise adjustment and tried to put pressure and attack more. That way, although Iglesias still used his precision, speed and ability to connect clear and powerful counterpunches, at least the Ukrainian from time to time landed a jab, a right hand or a hook downstairs and he did not make things so easy for the favorite.
In any case, Iglesias is on another level and in every tactical situation he was superior to his opponent, since both by throwing offensives and moving around won the rounds very clearly and accumulated punishment on Velikovskiy, who dealt with the blows just due to his courage and tenacity. However, in the eighth round Velikovskiy had a horrible swelling on his left eyebrow (he had suffered a head butt and a cut in that area in the fourth round) and the duel needed to be stopped. Even more so as the visitor had lost all the rounds, was visibly tired and, therefore, he did not even have the remote possibility of a decisive lucky punch.
Yet, in an example of horrific negligence, the fight continued until the tenth round, when the referee, after a tense combination of hooks by Iglesias, decided to stop the clash, something Velikovksiy’s corner should have done long before.
Iglesias is very similar to another promising Cuban super middleweight like David Morrell, since both are skilled southpaws with great reach, a wide variety of technical resources, good punch output and precision, among many other qualities. In fact, they both share the exact same record, both being undefeated in eight bouts, seven of them won by stoppage. So it is inevitable to wonder how much success will both achieve in their careers and how a duel between the two would be like.
In any case, focusing on the case of Iglesias, he is currently WBA number 12 and seems prepared to face serious tests against ranked fighters in 2023, although his team may prefer to increase his professional experience with a few more fights against boxers close to the world lists before putting him in decisive fights.
