Después de haber castigado hasta el knockout a sus rivales o dominado sus pugnas hasta amplias decisiones en la absoluta mayoría de sus combates, el olímpico estadounidense Charles Conwell 18(13KO)-0 tuvo el sábado su combate más difícil desde su victoria ante Courtney Pennington. Y es que Conwell tuvo inesperadas complicaciones para lidiar en la primera mitad con el bravísimo dominicano Juan Carlos “Merengue” Abreu 25(23KO)-7(1)-1 que, motivado por su triunfo ante el prospecto Kulakhmet, ofreció una meritoria actuación pese a terminar perdiendo en la segunda mitad.
El veredicto final de los jueces fue una decisión mayoritaria a favor de Conwell con puntuaciones de ridículo 95-95, demasiado ajustado 96-94 y un 98-92 más acorde a lo sucedido.
Durante los primeros minutos Conwell lució extrañamente mal, avanzando demasiado cerrado, no encontrando el momento adecuado para sacar sus manos y cayendo en los jabs de un Abreu más activo en sus ataques y que recibió en la distancia corta y media-corta al irresoluto favorito con ganchos y uppercuts. Es más, por momentos el siempre fuerte, contundente y agresivo Conwell retrocedió ante los ataques rivales. A esto además se sumó un serio corte cerca del párpado izquierdo que molestó mucho al estadounidense, que se pasó el guante por ese ojo incontables veces.
De todos modos, en el cuarto round Conwell cambió de marcha tras impactar un duro gancho zurdo al rostro que hizo a Abreu perder la iniciativa y pasar a ser presionado. En el quinto round el dominicano volvió a intentar avanzar, pero Conwell le asestó potentes y precisos hooks a la cabeza que continuaron su línea ascendente en la pugna. Ante la dificultad “Merengue” trató de intensificar sus ofensivas en el sexto, pero volvió a recibir fuertes golpes de poder a la contra que le estremecieron.
Con todo, Abreu ni se amedrentó ni se rindió, y aunque fue golpeado por peligrosos golpes, entre ellos un potente gancho zurdo abajo que sintió o claros directos a la contra, continuó avanzando, trabajando y exigiendo esfuerzo de un Conwell que se vio obligado a apoyarse en su precisión con los golpes de poder para hacerse respetar. En cualquier caso, el estadounidense dejó tocado a Abreu en el noveno episodio con un derechazo y en el último asalto siguió golpeando claramente a su contrincante cuando continuó abalanzándose sobre él.
La victoria en esta eliminatoria semifinal le permitirá a Conwell escalar hasta el top 3 WBC y quedar al alcance de una eliminatoria final, si bien de momento necesitará esperar a ver si se materializa o no el choque entre el titular interino Sebastián Fundora y el número 2 del ranking Tony Harrison. Por lo demás, quizás Conwell tenga más fácil lograr oportunidades importantes ahora que se ha visto que no es ni mucho menos imbatible (nadie lo es), especialmente comparando su actuación ante Abreu con las de los peso wélter Jaron Ennis y Alexander Besputin.
Vargas sumó nueva victoria
El tramo en PPV del evento Zepeda-Prograis se inició con un nuevo triunfo del prospecto del peso superwélter Fernando “El Feroz” Vargas Jr. 7(7KO)-0, hijo del campeón mundial Fernando Vargas que derrotó por KOT en el segundo asalto a Alejandro “Thunder” Martínez 3(2KO)-3(1)-1.
El combate no tuvo mucho que contar, ya que el zurdo Vargas, que parecía pertenecer a una división superior a la de Martínez, persiguió a su contrincante escogiendo combinaciones en directo-cruzado y ganchos al torso. Martínez a duras penas tuvo éxito con sus manos y no logró evitar el peligro con sus piernas, así que en el segundo round una serie de izquierdas rectas enlazadas con curvos de mano adelantada llevaron al tapiz al no favorito. Tras la reanudación una combinación uppercut de izquierda-cruzado diestro volvió a derribar a Martínez, poniéndose así fin al choque.

After having punished to the knockout his opponents, or having dominated them on wide decision wins, in the vast majority of his bouts, on Saturday American Olympian Charles Conwell 18(13KO)-0 had his toughest bout since his win over Courteney Pennington. Conwell had unexpected difficulties dealing in the first half with the brave and resistant Dominican Juan Carlos «Merengue» Abreu 25(23KO)-7(1)-1 who, motivated by his victory over the prospect Kulakhmet, offered a meritorious performance despite ending up losing in the second half of the clash.
The final verdict of the judges was a majority decision in favor of Conwell with a ridiculous 95-95, a too close 96-94 and a 98-92 more in line with what happened.
During the first minutes Conwell looked strangely bad, advancing with his guard too high and closed, not finding the right moment to throw his punches and receiving the jabs of Abreu, who was more active with his hands and who hit the favorite at short and medium-short distance with hooks and uppercuts. What’s more, at times the always strong, forceful and aggressive Conwell backed down against his opponent’s attacks. Added to this was a serious cut near the left eyelid that bothered the American a lot (he touched his eye with the glove countless times).
However, in the fourth round, Conwell switched gears after landing a hard left hook to the face that made Abreu lose the initiative and being pressured. In the fifth round, the Dominican tried to advance again, but Conwell delivered powerful and precise hooks to the head that continued his rally in the fight. Faced with adversity, «Merengue» tried to intensify his offensives in the sixth round, but again he was hit by hard counter power shots that rocked him.
In any case, Abreu was not intimidated nor he gave up, and although he received dangerous blows, including a powerful left hook down that hurt him or a clear straight right hand, he continued to advance, to work and to force Conwell to put effort and to rely on his precision with power shots. In any case, the American shook Abreu in the ninth round with a right hand and in the last round he kept punishing his opponent when he marched forward.
The victory in this semifinal eliminator will allow Conwell to climb to the WBC top 3 and to be within reach of a final eliminator, although for now he will need to wait and see if the clash between the interim titleholder Sebastián Fundora and the number 2 in the ranking Tony Harrison materializes. For the rest, perhaps Conwell now will have an easier time getting outstanding opportunities now that he has showed he is far from unbeatable (nobody is), especially comparing his performance against Abreu with those of welterweights Jaron Ennis and Alexander Besputin.
Vargas scored another victory
The PPV section of the Zepeda-Prograis event began with a new victory for super welterweight prospect Fernando «El Feroz» Vargas Jr. 7(7KO)-0. The son of world champion Fernando Vargas defeated by TKO in the second round Alejandro «Thunder» Martinez 3(2KO)-3(1)-1.
The bout was not very complex, as the southpaw Vargas, who seemed to belong to a higher division than Martinez, pursued his opponent connecting straight hand-right hook combinations and body shots. Martinez had very little success with his hands and he couldn’t avoid danger with his legs, so in the second round a barrage of straight lefts linked with lead hooks brought the underdog to the mat. After the restart, a left uppercut-right hook combination dropped Martinez again, and thus the clash ended.
