“Super Bad” Estrada vs. Villarino

Preview: Alimkhanuly faces first defense as middleweight champion, Seniesa Estrada debuts with Top Rank

@BastionBoxing

As Demetrius Andrade relinquished his WBO middleweight world belt, interim titleholder Janibek Alimkhanuly 12(8KO)-0 became full champion, something that spoke volumes about how the undefeated Kazakh is perceived but that didn’t allow us to analyze how far his level really goes. For the moment Alimkhanuly has shone in victories over fighters such as Rob Brant, Hassan N’Dam and Danny Dignum, but we can only guess about his projection due to the refusal of Andrade and Jaime Munguía to face him.

It is said that now Munguía is willing to battle Alimkhanuly after the tune-up fight he will face later this month but, considering how Golden Boy Promotions is managing the Mexican’s career, this is not a sure thing at all. In any case, while Munguía decides whether he wants to face this challenge or not, Alimkhanuly will not remain inactive, but will step into the ring for the first defense of his reign this Saturday, at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, United States, against the British Denzel Bentley 17(14KO)-1(1)-1.

Reasonably, many are annoyed due to the fact that in this era a boxer who was knocked out a year ago in a national championship can reach a world championship before the fighter who beat him. That is to say, it is not logical that Bentley is fighting the world champion Alimkhanuly after Felix Cash knocked him out in the third round, to which could be added his draw against Mark Heffron and a split decision victory against Linus Udofia. But Bentley simply meets the requirements Alimkhanuly’s promoter (Top Rank) is looking for.

Despite not being an elite boxer, the British champion Bentley has a certain level and is much better known by the general public than other ranked boxers (for example Andrei Mikhailovich, Denis Radovan or Hiroya Nojima). In addition, he had no scheduled fights or injuries and he belongs to the stable of Frank Warren, a great ally of Bob Arum and Top Rank. In this way, the fight was easy to agree, his name will not look bad in Alimkhanuly’s record and, on paper, he is not a great threat that could hinder the future plans of the titlist.

Certainly, Bentley has a very good range, will enter the fight full of motivation and has a punch that should not be underestimated. However, he does not have a great chin, he has clear tactical flaws and, if he does not charge into the attack against inferior fighters, he offers periods of inaction that give his opponents a lot of margin to adjust. Therefore, considering that Alimkhanuly is a very incisive fighter, with a lot of ability to exploit breaches and great ring intelligence, as well as the capacity to create a very solid tactical control, it is to be assumed that he will score a victory, that could very well be by stoppage if Bentley does not know how to react again in the face of adversity.

“Super Bad” Estrada vs. Villarino
The co-main event will be another world championship, specifically for the WBA world minimumweight title held by the American Seniesa “Super Bad” Estrada 22(9KO)-0, who will make her debut with Top Rank. Taking into account that Estrada is a top 10 pound-for-pound female boxer and that she soundly defeated Marlen Esparza, it was surprising and absurd that Golden Boy Promotions let the former get away from the company while they hyped the latter through controversial verdicts.

Be that as it may, Estrada has an excellent future ahead of her and surely with Top Rank she will be able to make the most of it. For now her first step will be a fight against Argentinian Jazmín Gala Villarino 6(1KO)-1-2. This, in principle, should be Estrada’s mandatory defense, since Villarino has one of the secondary titles of said organization (the Gold belt). In any case, beyond a draw against Ayelén Granadino, there is hardly anything to highlight in her record. Also, although she is brave, marches forward and throws combinations of straight punches full of will, she opens dangerously in her offenses, which end up being very predictable.

Therefore, there is no reason to think that Villarino will be able to pull off the big upset against Estrada, who will surely be able to take advantage of her speed, explosiveness, punching power and counterpunching prowess to achieve a convincing victory in this first step in her new journey.

The entire Alimkhanuly-Bentley card will be broadcast in the United States on ESPN+, with the main card starting theoretically at 10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT, 3:00 p.m. in the UK.
