El peso pesado, plata olímpico, Richard Torrez no tuvo problemas para derrotar a Ahmed Hefny

Después de que se le escogiesen rivales a medida en sus tres primeros combates y de que lograse en ellos rápidas victorias que permitieron a Top Rank hacer llamativos vídeos de highlights, el sábado el plata olímpico Richard Torrez Jr. 4(4KO)-0 siguió inflando su récord con otra pelea demasiado sencilla para su nivel, algo muy común con los prospectos en la división del peso pesado. En esta ocasión su víctima fue el egipcio Ahmed “Prince of Egypt” Hefny 13(5KO)-3(1), que fue derrotado en el tercer round.
La presión del contundente Torrez se tradujo en un primer knockdown en el asalto inicial tras recibir Hefny un par de izquierdas rectas. El púgil egipcio se las apañó para llegar al segundo asalto, pero entonces siguió siendo hostigado con intensidad por parte del favorito hasta que una andanada de golpes volvió a llevarlo al tapiz. De nuevo, Hefny logró alcanzar la campana y el tercer round, pero en dicho episodio recurrió a constantes clinches para intentar frenar a su rival y perdió por ello un punto.
Sea como sea, esto no tuvo ninguna consecuencia en el resultado, puesto que en ese mismo episodio Torrez continuó su ofensiva con hooks y directos hasta que el desordenado y cansado Hefny se arrodilló en la lona y el árbitro se hartó del “duelo” y lo dio por concluido.
Teniendo en cuenta que Hefny había perdido contra un Dacarree Scott técnicamente limitado, con serios problemas de peso y en mal estado de forma, es evidente que los matchmakers de Top Rank sabían que este púgil no iba a poder ser ni siquiera medianamente competitivo ante el agresivo, fortísimo y potente Torrez. De ese modo, más que preguntarse sobre el potencial del prospecto estadounidense, que tiene cualidades ofensivas pero que a menudo se descontrola demasiado, lo que nos debemos preguntar es cuándo dejará su promotora de escogerle oponentes absurdamente sencillos e intentará hacerle mejorar con tests adecuados.

After tailor-made opponents were selected for him in his first three bouts and he achieved quick victories that allowed Top Rank to make striking highlights videos, on Saturday Olympic silver medalist Richard Torrez Jr. 4(4KO)-0 continued to fill his record with a fight too easy for his level, something very common with prospects in the heavyweight division. This time his victim was the Egyptian Ahmed “Prince of Egypt” Hefny 13(5KO)-3(1), who was defeated in the third round.
The pressure of the forceful Torrez resulted in a first knockdown in the opening round after Hefny received two straight left hands. The Egyptian boxer managed to make it to the second round, but then he continued to be attacked intensely by the favorite until a barrage of blows brought him back to the mat. Again, Hefny reached the bell and the third round, but in that episode he resorted to constant clinches to try to slow down his rival and lost a point for it.
Be that as it may, this had no consequence in the result, since in that same round Torrez continued his offense with hooks and straight punches until the tired Hefny knelt on the canvas and the referee got fed up with the «duel» and stopped it.
Considering that Hefny had lost to Dacarree Scott, boxer with limited technique, serious weight problems and poor shape, it is evident that the Top Rank matchmakers knew that this fighter could not be even moderately competitive against the aggressive, very strong and powerful Torrez. So, rather than wondering about the potential of the American prospect, who has offensive qualities but often gets too wild, the question is when will his promoter stop picking absurdly easy opponents for him and will try to improve him with proper tests.
