Entrando como remplazo tardío y enfrentándose a un boxeador cada vez más potente y que está rindiendo cada vez mejor como profesional, el argentino José Matías Romero 26(9KO)-3(1) tuvo merito levantándose de la lona y llegando al noveno asalto ante el cubano, doble oro olímpico, Robeisy “El Tren” Ramirez 11(7KO)-1. Con todo, el dominio de Ramírez resultó incuestionable antes de que éste se hiciese con un KOT.
Tras algo de tanteo, en el primer asalto el zurdo Ramírez movió a su oponente con un bloqueado cruzado zurdo y seguidamente lo arrojó al tapiz con un potente directo de izquierda. Dado que esto sucedió hacia el final del round, no hubo entonces tiempo para mucho más, pero en los siguientes episodios siguió el acecho de Ramírez, que persiguió al móvil Romero escogiendo el momento para golpearle con amenazantes directos de izquierda, ganchos abajo y cruzados diestros.
El fogueado Romero no se volvió a ver en apuros similares durante los siguientes asaltos, pero el control de las acciones de Ramírez se hizo absolutamente evidente. Y es que en un duelo que se volvió más táctico, la precisión y la destreza del cubano le permitieron conectar round tras round más golpes significativos ante un Romero que, aunque hizo intentonas con entradas y salidas, por lo general no pudo equiparar la destreza de su rival y escogió un planteamiento bastante defensivo para evitar otro knockdown.
Sin necesidad alguna de tomar riesgos para vencer el combate, Ramírez se terminó relajando y disminuyó su cadencia de golpeo, aunque esto no impidió que siguiese ganando asaltos ante el argentino, que intentó entonces mostrarse algo más activo pero sin resultados positivos. De hecho, en el noveno asalto un certero y potente cruzado zurdo sorprendió a un Romero que retrocedía intentando evitar un jab, siendo desequilibrado y quedando tocado. Esta oportunidad no fue desaprovechada por Ramírez, que se abalanzó sobre su oponente lanzando golpes de poder hasta que el encerrado Romero fue sacudido sin respuesta por varios hooks y el tercer hombre detuvo las acciones.
Es de suponer que, como antes de que Romero tuviese que entrar como sustituto Ramírez tenía programado enfrentarse a Jesse Magdaleno, el combate inicialmente planeado se pactará de nuevo una vez que el excampeón mundial Magdaleno se recupere de su lesión. De todos modos, combinándose su habilidad con una potencia a un solo golpe cada vez más peligrosa, Ramírez será muy claro favorito para derrotar a dicho oponente si se vuelve a pactar el duelo.

Entering as a late replacement and facing an increasingly powerful boxer who is performing better and better as a professional, the Argentinian José Matías Romero 26(9KO)-3(1) deserves credit for getting up from the canvas and reaching the ninth round against the Cuban, two-time Olympic gold medalist, Robeisy “El Tren” Ramirez 11(7KO)-1. All in all, Ramírez’s control of the fight was unquestionable before he achieved a TKO victory.
After some testing, in the first round the southpaw Ramírez shook his opponent with a blocked left hook and knocked him down with a powerful straight left. Since this happened towards the end of the round, there was no time for much more, but in the following rounds Ramirez kept chasing the mobile Romero choosing the moment to hit him with threatening straight lefts, right hooks down and lead hooks to the head.
The experienced Romero did not suffer similar difficulties during the following rounds, but Ramírez’s dominance of the actions was absolutely evident. In a duel that became tactical, the precision and skill of the Cuban allowed him to connect round after round more significant punches than Romero who, although he made attempts going in and out, generally could not match the skill of his opponent and chose a fairly defensive approach to avoid another knockdown.
Without any need to take risks to win the fight, Ramírez ended up relaxing and decreasing his punching rate, although this did not prevent him from continuing winning the rounds against the Argentinian, who then tried to be somewhat more active but without obtaining positive results. In fact, in the ninth round an accurate and powerful left hook surprised Romero, who was backing away trying to avoid a jab and was hurt and staggered. This opportunity was not wasted by Ramirez, who charged against his opponent throwing power shots until the cornered Romero was rocked by unanswered hooks and the referee stopped the bout.
Presumably, as Ramirez was scheduled to face Jesse Magdaleno before Romero came on as a late substitute, the initially planned matchup will be rescheduled once the former world champion Magdaleno recovers from his injury. However, combining his ability with an increasingly dangerous one-punch power, Ramírez will be very clear favorite to defeat said opponent if the duel is agreed again.
