Por lo general el boxeo, por como está configurado, establece de forma natural los límites del nivel de los púgiles si no es que están sobreprotegidos. En el caso del estadounidense Joseph “Jo Jo” Díaz 32(15KO)-2-1 esto queda bastante claro. Su derrota ante Devin Haney le situó por debajo del nivel de la cúspide del peso ligero, si bien su condición de excampeón mundial y sus triunfos ante Tevin Farmer y Javier Fortuna, así como su empate ante Shavkat Rakhimov, permiten que sea considerado un púgil de la parte alta.
Con todo, esta posición está amenazada, y podría quedar reducido a la condición de “portero” del top 15 o a la de test para púgiles con aspiraciones si pierde su crucial combate del sábado. En ese día “Jo Jo” encabezará una velada enfrentándose a un invicto pegador en ascenso como el mexicano William “Camarón” Zepeda 26(23KO)-0, boxeador en el que Golden Boy Promotions parece tener bastante confianza.
No obstante, Zepeda no sólo accederá a este combate tras ver cortada su racha de 15 triunfos antes del límite consecutivos, sino que además lo hará tras tener que trabajar mucho más duro de lo esperado ante René Alvarado, púgil que se suponía que sólo iba a ser utilizado como un escalón pero que, pese a haber participado en muchas guerras en su carrera y ascender desde el peso superpluma, ofreció una igualada y contendida batalla. Así, Zepeda también necesita una victoria, aunque a diferencia de Díaz no es para mantenerse en la parte alta de la categoría, sino para irrumpir definitivamente en ella y recuperar impulso.
Por otro lado, en términos prácticos más allá de las valoraciones generales, Zepeda es 6º WBO, 8º WBA y 13º WBC, mientras que Díaz es 6º WBC y 10º WBA, por lo que el vencedor de este duelo se asegurará un excelente posicionamiento en las listas en esta dura y atestada división.
En cuanto a lo boxístico, es difícil que el combate Díaz-Zepeda vaya a aburrir, puesto que ambos son dos aguerridos y fuertes púgiles que suelen avanzar con firmeza y que utilizan compactos y sólidos golpes de poder. Con todo, “Camarón” tiene una ventaja en potencia, cadencia de golpeo y regularidad que podrían ser decisivas ante un Díaz que en ocasiones padece serios bajones de rendimiento en las pugnas ya sea por malas decisiones tácticas, obstáculos mentales o por cuestiones físicas. Así, si “Jo Jo” quiere salir con el brazo en alto no podrá permitirse periodos de conformismo y necesitará apoyarse en su ventaja en experiencia de calidad y en su astucia para intentar evitar verse sobrepasado por el ritmo del ambicioso mexicano.

Esta velada desde el Pechanga Arena de San Diego, Estados Unidos, contará también con un buen mundial IBF femenino del peso mosca entre la argentina Leonela Yúdica 18(1KO)-0-3 y la excampeona mexicana Arely “Ametralladora” Muciño 31(11KO)-3(1)-2, choque que la promotora no ha pactado de forma aleatoria. Al contrario, más allá de los alicientes del encuentro, que podría dejar rounds contendidos, la intención es dar exposición y generar interés de cara a un choque de triple unificación entre la ganadora del Yúdica-Muciño y la monarca WBA-WBC Marlen Esparza, que es la boxeadora que más apoyo recibe actualmente dentro de la escuadra de Golden Boy.
Por otro lado, la mencionada compañía seguirá mostrando que tiene poca o ninguna fe en las posibilidades de éxito en la cumbre del peso wélter estadounidense Alexis “Lex” Rocha 20(13KO)-1, que pese a ser 7º WBO y 13º IBF seguirá ganando tiempo con oponentes a medida en lugar de encarar peleas de preparación adecuadas. En esta ocasión su adversario será el mexicano Jesús Antonio “Ricky” Pérez 24(18KO)-3, que no boxea desde hace casi tres años y que perdió sus tres mayores combates (contra Madiyev, “Chuko” y Zorrilla).
Finalmente, en el evento también destaca el duelo entre los invictos peso supergallo Héctor Valdez 15(8KO)-0 y Max Ornelas 15(5KO)-0-1, boxeadores que pugnarán por lograr un impulso significativo en sus trayectorias y recibir sostenido apoyo promocional en persecución de sus objetivos.
