Two years without an European heavyweight championship, something that has not happened in more than 60 years

After Umut Camkiran and Zhan Kossobutskiy renounced to their position as challengers for the European heavyweight belt in July, the EBU, which could not find a boxer who wanted to fight for the highly devalued belt, decided to try to prevent the dire situation in its division from getting worse . Still, “the solution” was not brilliant: the EBU simply did not select any more official challengers for weeks and weeks.

Finally, after new embarrassing failures, the German Peter Kadiru and the Croatian Alen Babić on paper accepted to fight for the title, although this bout did not materialize either. In fact, one day before the purse bid, Babić, who in theory will fight for the WBC bridgerweight “title”, predictably renounced to his position as challenger for the European belt.

In this way, once again it was confirmed that the European heavyweight belt will continue being vacant, and now Kadiru will have to wait for a new opponent to be chosen. That is, if he does not follow another path as so many others have done in recent times. It must be remembered that there have been no European heavyweight championships since November 2020 (Joyce-Dubois), so next month two years will have passed without the title being put at stake.

This is the worst case regarding the European heavyweight title in more than 60 years, since the last time there was a similar break was between February 1958 and March 1960, that is, at the time of Ingermar Johansson!, who then defeated Floyd Patterson. In addition, considering the myriad of names that have been tentatively selected as challengers in recent years, it is possible that the period of inactivity of the title will exceed that of Johansson’s era. In that case, it would be an unprecedented break since Post-World War II era.

How much are the inept leaders of the EBU willing to degrade the European belt? Only they know. But if these figures and the infinite quantity of resignations to fight for the belt do not make them think about the need to renew and improve how this organization operates and implement modifications immediately, nothing will really convince them to do so.
