On few occasions there are evenings in which participate more than one top 10 pound-for-pound boxer, being even less frequent to see cards in which two of them face each other. So if there is an event with two fights between boxers considered among the ten best in the world, this clearly shows that the bill is a significant milestone.

This is especially so for women’s boxing, which currently has considerable attention and interesting fights, but until not long ago was away from the spotlight, with few unifications and even less frequent bouts between pound-for-pound fighters. On the other hand, the effort that has been made to put two very relevant duels for female boxing headlining an evening broadcast by Sky and ESPN+ shows clearly that there is an intention on the part of the elite of the industry to invest and promote women’s boxing.

In any case, beyond all this, what is really important is that this Saturday, at the O2 Arena in London, United Kingdom, there will be two long-awaited and interesting clashes from which will come out strengthened two big stars for female boxing.

Marshall vs. Shields
It would be difficult to find two boxers more different than the British Savannah Marshall 12(10KO)-0 and the American Claressa Shields 12(2KO)-0, since they don’t have points of coincidence in terms of personality, attitude, appearance, boxing style, size, etc. However, both coincided at the same time and place once: the amateur world championships in Qinhuangdao, China, in 2012, in which Marshall conquered the gold medal and dealt the only loss of her amateur career to Shields.

Since both stood out as professionals, that result created constant talk within women’s boxing of the need for the two boxers to battle again, something to which they were finally pushed when, in the fight to become undisputed middleweight champion, Marshall won the WBO title and Shields captured the WBA, WBC and IBF belts. In this way, and after countless exchanges of words that have helped to create expectation, this Saturday they will headline one of the biggest female fights of the decade and of the 21st century.

Without an obvious favorite despite what the supporters of one or the other boxer may say, there are many questions that will not be answered until we see them in the ring. For example, some consider certain that Shields’ skill and mobility, and her more orthodox technique, will serve her to, through quick jabs, short combinations and precise counterpunches, tactically neutralize and easily dominate Marshall. However, the visitor probably won’t have it so easy to deal in a sustained way with the pressure of a bigger puncher, with more range and who, due to her unorthodox style, sometimes becomes quite difficult to predict.

On the opposite side, some point out without hesitation that Marshall will only need to let his hands fly to effortlessly destroy Shields in a few minutes but, although her one-punch power could give her positive results at any time, it would be very surprising if a fighter with the level, the motivation and the defensive resources of the American collapses without creating obstacles.

In other words, both have weapons to be able to aspire to victory and, although it is true that Shields in her previous biggest fight controlled Christina Hammer, it is also true that she was knocked down by Hanna Gabriels and that against Femke Hermans and Hannah Rankin won decisions while Shields scored knockouts. In short, the key to victory in the fight will be the control of the distance of the boxers, since if Marshall manages to punch first from the middle distance, she could be in good direction towards a triumph that Shields could avoid if, instead, she manages to get in and out fluently and handles the bout from the long distance.

Triple unification
Given that the WBA super featherweight champion Hyun Mi Choi has decided to avoid risks and make herself irrelevant through easy defenses, the WBC-WBO-IBF unification clash between Americans Mikaela Mayer 17(5KO)-0 and Alycia Baumgardner 12(7KO)-1 will not select an undisputed champion, but it will chose an unquestionable number 1 in the division. Apart from this, the fight will also serve to definitively make the winner emerge as a very important name in female boxing.

The Olympian Mayer, who has had strong support from Top Rank, is the one who seems destined for this position, given that, beyond her amateur achievements, her undefeated record and other elements, she has a very effective boxing that has allowed her to achieve a resume qualitatively much superior to that of her opponent. Obviously, the door to stardom is also open for Baumgardner if she were to defeat the favorite Mayer, although in the fight there is more at stake for her: she needs to show that she did not just have a one-off success against Terri Harper, that her setback against Christina Linardatou does not reflect her actual level and that she can fight at the top 10 pound-for-pound level consistently.

In any case, despite the fact that Baumgardner is a dangerous counter-puncher with an explosiveness that cannot be underestimated, Mayer has scored consecutive significant victories with very good performances. Also, in the biggest challenge of her career to date, her very close match against elite super featherweight Maiva Hamadouche, she showed her toughness by answering constantly and forcefully in the intense battle. Therefore, it seems that Mayer has the versatility, resistance and ability necessary to be able to achieve victory if she is not hurt by a decisive isolated hand and avoids tactical hesitation due to the reach of her opponent.

These two matches, plus a support with female fights with obvious favorites, will be broadcast on Sky Sports and ESPN+ from 7:30 p.m. in the UK, 2:30 p.m./11:30 a.m. in the United States.
