Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, Estados Unidos.

Sebastián Fundora won a new battle of attrition against very brave Carlos Ocampo

Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, United States. At stake the WBC interim super welterweight title.

After a crushing defeat against Errol Spence, who beat him in the first round in 2018, the Mexican Carlos “Chema” Ocampo 34(22KO)-1(1) somewhat redeemed himself by offering a very brave effort against the very tall and undefeated American Sebastián «The Towering Inferno» Fundora 19(13KO)-0-1. Even so, Ocampo ended up getting hit by many hard punches and suffered a new loss by unanimous decision with excessive scorecards of 119-109, 118-110 and a fairer 117-111.

The actions began in the long distance, with Fundora trying to use his reach through his jab, although his power shots were few against Ocampo, who for his part tried to surprise attacking from long range with varied hooks. Apparently, Fundora was not satisfied with the type of combat that was taking place, in which Ocampo sometimes obtained positive results, so from the fourth round, as so many other times in his career, he decided to stop his feet and generate hard exchanges at close range.

Both boxers landed then very hard hands in hook or uppercut, so soon the bout turned into a battle of attrition in which whoever showed signs of weakness first could be beaten. At a certain point in the sixth round Fundora was rocked, but who ended up clinching in that round was Ocampo, who was visibly hurt after some straight punches.

The Mexican kept battling bravely, connecting unorthodox hooks, but in the exchanges he was suffering more damage. Despite this, drawing strength in this complicated situation, Ocampo overcame the most difficult moments and, although he lost the fight, he resisted till the end and even connected some good combinations that hit clean Fundora’s face.

If he manages to stay unbeaten, through his WBC interim title Fundora will access as a mandatory challenger to a matchup against undisputed champion Jermell Charlo. Still, with Charlo having to face first mandatory defenses against Tim Tszyu and Bakhram Murtazaliev, Fundora’s opportunity could come in the second half of 2023 at the earliest unless the champion vacates his belts. Should this happen, Fundora would become world champion and Tony Harrison would be the best ranked boxer to challenge him.

In any case, Fundora will likely still need to face some more fights while he waits for a decisive match, bouts in which PBC will need to avoid selecting him as opponent a good puncher. If he fights a powerful fighter, Fundora, who always ends up immersed in tough wars in which he receives many clean shots, could suffer a serious setback.
