Eggington perdió ante Dennis Hogan, Nikita Tszyu dejó gran actuación y el ranqueado Sam Goodman venció amplisimamente

Encadenando victorias desde decisivas derrotas, el británico Sam “The Savage” Eggington 32(18KO)-7(2) y el exaspirante mundial irlandés Dennis “Hurricane” Hogan 30(7KO)-4(2)-1 disputaban un choque crucial para aspirar a alcanzar una gran oportunidad en el futuro próximo. En el duelo entre ambos, Hogan utilizó su taimado boxeo para lograr una victoria por decisión mayoritaria (doble 116-112 y un 114-114) no demasiado brillante pero que le servirá para participar en una cartelera importante en 2023.
Como en tantas otras peleas recientes, Hogan intentó moverse y usar una mezcla de astutos golpes y frecuentes agarres para intentar llevarse los rounds y dificultar el despliegue de Eggington. El británico no tenía un ritmo combativo tan alto como en otras ocasiones, pero igualmente en la primera mitad lanzó y conectó más manos que su contrincante, destacando sus ganchos zurdos. Y es que, aunque los jabs de Hogan eran oportunos y a veces encontraba huecos inesperados con sus golpes de poder, Eggington era más consistente con su directo diestro y su hook de mano adelantada.
Si Eggington hubiese tenido un buen control de los espacios y más inteligencia de ring habría podido evitar que varios rounds fuesen demasiado igualados y habría logrado un control claro. Pero a menudo no se decidió a la hora de apretar el gatillo en la distancia media y Hogan impactó varios jabs sucedidos por clinch o contras aisladas claras en el tramo final de los asaltos que pudieron decantar a los jueces.
La tendencia favorable a “Hurricane” se afianzó y expandió en la segunda mitad, en la que Eggington quedó cada vez más desdibujado, ineficaz y confundido, siendo arrastrado hacia la derrota por los correosos recursos tácticos de Hogan, que recordemos que en 2019 perdió controvertidamente en México contra Jaime Munguía.
N. Tszyu logró cuarta victoria
En la velada también logró un nuevo triunfo del prospecto del peso superwélter Nikita Tszyu 4(3KO)-0, que esta vez superó por abandono en el tercer asalto al hasta ahora invicto Darkon Dryden 4(4KO)-1(1).
Con decisión, Dryden intentó atacar y arrinconar al favorito, pero el zurdo Tszyu le contestó con buenos izquierdazos, cruzados diestros, combinaciones de ambos golpes y con otras manos también enlazadas con destreza y velocidad. Además, Tszyu se salió bien de la línea de ataque de Dryden y le castigó con golpes al torso. Dryden no dejó de intentar avanzar, pero en el tercer round Tszyu aguantó el terreno y desde la distancia corta descargó andanadas de curvos que impactaron de lleno contra su rival, que no salió al cuarto round.
Un paso más hacia al mundial
Antes del semifondo, el peso supergallo Sam Goodman 13(7KO)-0 logró una amplísima victoria por decisión unánime sobre Jason Cooper 17(7KO)-4-1 que podría llevarle al top 5 WBO al haber defendido un título menor.
Cooper hizo todo lo que pudo, moviéndose, jabeando y lanzando arremetidas salteadas intentando disminuir la presión, pero Goodman era mucho más rápido, hábil, certero y contundente. Así, en los cruces de jabs se llevó la mejor parte, con sus uno-dos pudo empujar hacia las cuerdas a su contrincante y en la distancia corta conectó amenazantes ganchos arriba y abajo y uppercuts.
Entre los variados golpes de Goodman destacaron sus hooks zurdos al torso, que desgastaron un tanto a un Cooper que también recibió fluidas y llamativas combinaciones. Aun así, el no favorito resistió el castigo sin derrumbarse hasta el final, aunque sin poder evitar sufrir una derrota clarísima.

Coming from consecutive victories after decisive defeats, British Sam «The Savage» Eggington 32(18KO)-8(2) and Irish former world title challenger Dennis «Hurricane» Hogan 31(7KO)-4(2)-1 faced a crucial clash to try to achieve a great bout in the near future. In their match, Hogan used his cunning boxing to achieve a majority decision victory (double 116-112 y un 114-114) that was not brilliant but that will serve him to be part of an important card in 2023.
As in so many other recent fights, Hogan tried to move around and use a mix of astute punches and frequent clinches to try to win the rounds and make it difficult for Eggington to deploy his offensives. The Brit didn’t have a fighting pace as high as on other occasions, but still in the first half of the bout he threw more hands than his opponent, highlighting his left hooks. Despite Hogan’s jabs had good timing and he sometimes found unexpected gaps for his power shots, Eggington was more consistent with his straight right hands and lead hooks.
If Eggington was a boxer with good control of distance and more ring intelligence he would have been able to prevent several rounds from being too close and would have established a clear control. But he often hesitated in the middle distance and Hogan connected jabs followed by clinches or clear isolated counters in the final stretch of the rounds to convince the judges.
The trend in favor of «Hurricane» took hold and expanded in the second half, in which Eggington was increasingly ineffective and confused, being dragged towards defeat by the tricky tactical resources of Hogan, who in 2019 controversially lost in Mexico against Jaime Munguía.
N. Tszyu achieved fourth victory
The evening also offered another win for super welterweight prospect Nikita Tszyu 4(3KO)-0, who this time beat in the third round the undefeated Darkon Dryden 4(4KO)-1(1).
With determination, Dryden tried to attack and corner the favorite, but the southpaw Tszyu answered him with good left hands, right hooks, combinations of both shots and with other punches linked with skill and speed. Additionally, Tszyu used well sidesteps to get out of Dryden’s line of attack and punished him with body shots. Dryden did not stop trying to advance, but in the third round Tszyu held his ground and from short distance unleashed hooks that hit his rival clearly. After that, Dryden did not come out for the fourth round.
One more step towards the world title fight
Before the co-feature bout, super bantamweight Sam Goodman 13(7KO)-0 achieved a wide unanimous decision victory over Jason Cooper 17(7KO)-4-1 that could take him to the top 5 WBO having defended a minor title.
Cooper did everything he could, moving, jabbing and throwing eventual attacks trying to reduce the pressure, but Goodman was faster, more skillful, more accurate and more forceful. Thus, in the exchanges of jabs he got better results, with his one-two he was able to push his opponent to the ropes and in the short distance he landed threatening hooks up and down and uppercuts.
Among Goodman’s varied shots, his left hooks to the body stood out, punches which somewhat wore down Cooper, who also received smooth and eye-catching combinations. Even so, the underdog resisted the punishment without succumbing until the end, although without being able to avoid suffering a very clear defeat.
